Europe unites in hatred of French Support Apolyton, buy Civilization 2

Ask to describe the French and France's neighbors automatically start saying very unkind things. In fact you'd almost think they were talking about Americans but instead it is France. I'm still wondering what someone has to do in order for people in Sweden to think you are immoral since Swedes.

Language, history, cooking and support for rival football teams still divide Europe. But when everything else fails, one glue binds the continent together: hatred of the French.

Typically, the French refuse to accept what arrogant, overbearing monsters they are.

But now after the publication of a survey of their neighbours' opinions of them at least they no longer have any excuse for not knowing how unpopular they are.

Why the French are the worst company on the planet, a wry take on France by two of its citizens, dredges up all the usual evidence against them. They are crazy drivers, strangers to customer service, obsessed by sex and food and devoid of a sense of humour.

But it doesn't stop there, boasting a breakdown, nation by nation, of what in the French irritates them.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Britons described them as "chauvinists, stubborn, nannied and humourless". However, the French may be more shocked by the views of other nations.

For the Germans, the French are "pretentious, offhand and frivolous". The Dutch describe them as "agitated, talkative and shallow." The Spanish see them as "cold, distant, vain and impolite" and the Portuguese as "preaching". In Italy they comes across as "snobs, arrogant, flesh-loving, righteous and self-obsessed" and the Greeks find them "not very with it, egocentric bons vivants".

Interestingly, the Swedes consider them "disobedient, immoral, disorganised, neo-colonialist and dirty".

But the knockout punch to French pride came in the way the poll was conducted. People were not asked what they hated in the French, just what they thought of them.

"Interviewees were simply asked an open question - what five adjectives sum up the French," said Olivier Clodong, one of the study's two authors and a professor of social and political communication at the Ecole Superieur de Commerce, in Paris. "The answers were overwhelmingly negative."

According to Mr Clodong, the old adage that France is wonderful, it's just the French who are the problem, is shared across Europe.

"We are admired for our trains, the Airbus and Michelin tyres. But the buck stops there," he said.

Another section of the study deals with how the French see the rest of Europe.

"Believe it or not, the English and the French use almost exactly the same adjectives to describe each other - bar the word 'insular'," Mr Coldong said. "So the feelings are mutual."

Got spare money?

I don't so much dislike France or the French, but if I had to dig up negativity, I'd point out the same as the Swedes. Then again, us northeners are used to clean everything, so everything away from here is often seen as dirty because it is, disobidient yes yes this is true at least in EU, not well organised, again true but depends who you compare to, and neo-colonialist ABSOLUTELY RIGHT ON THE BUTTON!

Bravo Swedes.

But I don't dislike France or French. But they are dirty, disorganised, messy, jingoist neo-colonialists and not admitting it but bashing US instead.

it's true.

I always thought it was a weird quirk of history that the English and French were united in two huge wars against the Germans, when in day-to-day relations, both the English and French despise each other with more passion than either dislike the Germans...

It's amazing how europe starts to forgive the germans only 60 and 90 years after 2 wars while the french are hated without even starting a war against all of europe!
Great job France!

I never understood how anybody could prefer Chiraq (along with Putin and that chinese dude!!!!) above Bush during the iraq war already. oh well......

You know what the problem is overhere in europe, just a single example. In europe everybody speaks english but the french. The french think their language is the important language.
When there's a united broadcast like the eurovision songthingy (every year, don't watch it, waste of time)
Everything is declared in English and french!!! WTF! English and French!

French for the french and english for the rest of europe!
Why also in french? It's not as if it's done in english and german. Which would be fair! Since the german language is the 2nd language of europe. (spoken in germany, austria, swis and belgium) french is only spoken in france and belgium. total number: far below the german number.

But the germans don't care, they say: "English is good enough"
Oh my, I'll stop here. Please world: promise me one thing: never follow the lead of the power-hungry french ever again

chiraq or bush?
bush x 1000!!!!!!

am I ranting?

Uhm, do the names Louis XIV or Napoleon ring a bell, by any chance?

Because they didn't (want to) start a war over a 'pack of lies', to quote a certain British MP? No, let me amend that quote: a pack of blatant lies.

Because in war everybody loses?

Because everyone with an ounce of knowledge of the situation in Iraq (including American intelligence) had predicted that the current mess would be the most likely (if not inevitable) outcome?

Because Bush violated international law?

You're entirely free to prefer Bush over Chiraq or Putin (it's a choice between three evils, really, everyone will at the very least understand where you're coming from), but to boldly state that noone in a right state of mind could possibly have any other opinion -- that's is a bit... shall I say unsophisticated?

Locotus: of course the french have a history in europe, but I mean: modern history has the germans as the evil nation of europe. Not french. But more and more the germans are prefered above the germans. That says much.

I can see reasons against going to war and I can see reasons why people are against Bush.
But in the end Bush had an ideological reason to not go to war. Chiraq had a selfish reason to not support it. Which was mostly because of power-play. Wannabe importance. Popularity, etc.

Well, let me state different. Apart from people's hatred of Bush, I cannot see how Chiraq comes that easily away with his attutide in the discussion.

Or perhaps in a broader range:
- why no demonstrations against Putin in New York, London, Madrid, Paris and Rome?
- why no demonstrations against China in New York, London, .....
- why no demonstrations against french behavior in cote'd ivoire in New York......

or worse:
- why no demonstrations against Kim yon Il?
- why no demonstrations against Saddam Hussein wihle he still reigned?
- where are the anti-bomb-people who lined up in Bagdad to form a human shield against the americans right now? Why no human shield against the terrorists in Bagdad? There are more human shields needed then ever!

That's my point. I can see how people have a problem with Bush and his decisions. (Eventhough I think I can explain and counter those arguments)
But the bush-hatred is really weird compared to all I said above.

My European friends have demonstrated an impressing perspicacity ; this portrait is really like me : I am agitated, arrogant, chauvinist, cold, dirty, disobedient, disorganised, distant, egocentric bons vivants, flesh-loving, frivolous, humourless, immoral, impolite, nannied, neo-colonialist, offhand, preaching, pretentious, righteous, self obsessed, shallow, snob, stubborn, talkative and vain.

Although I represent a certain degree of perfection in the French character (partly due to my unlimited modesty and recognised obnoxiousness), my fellows-countrymen are not significantly behind, particularly regarding disobedience, frivolity, improvisation, stubbornness and talkativeness.

That is the reason why I admire and love so much my European friends who suffer none of these flaws.

Boy, you haven't come around a lot... Spanish don't speak english, Italians don't speak english. I am here in Spain and I can tell you... FORGET IT! If you just speak english, not even in Granada (with lots of foreign exchange students - the students yes ofc) they will understand you... and I was travelling in Italy and it's amazing how they DON'T speak it! And you know France, Italy and Spain make up a lot of people in Europe.

The french have to bear the scapegoat image here, but it's just not true. Go and ask a German what they think of the British... go and ask anyone what they think of the British... not much more positive responses here either... it's just that the Tommys are not worth caring for because they are on their island and everybody's happy when they stay there.
Or ask a German what they think about the Netherlands, or maybe you know better.. I can't imagine you like the germans very well...

Overall this is just a very shallow piece of getting-what-you-expected research. I wouldn't take it too seriously. There is lots of negativity among european countries...

No it's not a scapegoat thing, french are bunch of bastards and that's just it.

BUT this brings an interesting question. Since Liberty lovers say that everyone hates the US because of their freedom and ... economy, then how come everyone hates France too? Does this mean we are also jealous of.. exactly what?!

This is just the reality of the situation. Everyone hates everyone. So Americans, you're not special and when you cry the world hates you, yeah, but they also hate French. And lots of other folks as well. No exclusive deals here. Stop crying and start hating!!

If you have followed the news in the last few days, you'd also know everyone hates Russia too, and especially in Eastern Europe, Baltics etc.. have very special warm feeling for them

Screw everyone else than me.

Not quite.

The French and the bloody Rosbifs love to hate each other. But at least in the perfide Albion, the hatred for Germany is more genuine. I am under the impression that, for many Brits, the Germans are still the Huns.
French and Rosbifs make fun of each other, jibe at each other, and have deep disagreements over Europe. But it's not nearly as strong (or rather: as serious) as what the Rosbifs feel for the Germans IMO.

But at the eurovision festival there's nobody speaking itialian or spanish.

Oh, and about the dutch and the germans.
A recent poll showed that the hatred of the dutch is almost gone. Only among those who were in the war there's still some anti-germans sentiment.
But 50- likes the germans.
And it's well known that the germans like the dutch as well.

Like we like the belgiums as well. Of course we make fun about them and have a lot of jokes but in the end we do like the belgiums.

I think (but I have no support for that) we like the british as well. Of course we think they're strange etc. but they're certainly not arrogant or something.

Not to mention the danes or those from luxembourgh. no problems with them overthere.

I've always felt the English-French rivalry to have serious overtones of sibling disagreement. On a day to day basis, we'll scream at each other until we're blue in the face but, if someone else threatens us, we band together.

Typical xenophobic Torygraph article. They love putting the boot into the French.

And Spiffor's wrong, we have a bigger football rivalry with Germany but as a nation we definitely hate the French more. The wars with Germany are a recent thing, we've been fighting too and fro across the channel for over 1000 years.

This has mostly to do with the gaullist arrogance that supposes that Europe is a pool of resources to be used for France's international grandeur. The "these countries have missed an opportunity to keep quiet" (by Chirac, when new members expressed support for the war in Iraq right after Chirac and Schröder unilaterally said that Europe was against) is exactly in this line of thinking.

I agree that it utterly sucks, and Chirac's arrogance has seriously hurt our image in Europe*.

*You'll find a general agreement in France about the gaullist viey of Europe, but it's not intense enough that the people push their politicians to adopt a gaullist European stance. If we had a leader with a non-megalomaniac personality (like Jospin), France's European behaviour would be completely different.

Ah yes. But I thought our ancient hatred had merely degenerated in the occasional bar brawl, bad language, and crap torygraph article. I mean, things have never been the same since Fashoda
