I have no problems with that, as long as the police show some respect it's ok. I have been searched on airports a few times (presumably because of my somewhat punkish appearance), but they are just trying to do their job so I accept it. They are not mind-readers.

It's called privacy. Cops always say we don't know how it feels to be a cop. Well, cops don't know how it feels to be an innocent citizen and being harrassed by the cops.

cops don't know the consititution. We are innocent until proven guilty. We're sick and tired of being treated like we are guilty by the cops.

Enter the AD-FREE zone

I'll admit, I looked like an anarchist, especially being scruffy and having long hair and dressed in black. All I wanted to do, however, was go get a new kitty litter box for my kitties. So I got profiled.

The funny thing is, I was heading away from (and many blocks away from already) the protest (of maybe 50 people) when I was accosted. I was heading towards a back way out of the place, so I could avoid all the nonsense going on on 17th St.

The pig said he needed to see my ID, not could he. That's not a request. Looking like I did, I wasn't about to give them any reason to toss my ass in a bus with plastic handcuffs and wait until someone could bail me out.

Now, it's true that the area is a terrorist target, not just because of the foreign ministers, but also beause there is a huge fuel depo right next to the store (and the convention site). Anarchists do petty vandalism, not major terrorist attacks. Terrorists don't dress like protestors or mingle with protestors because they are trying to avoid attention. The crack down on protestors has nothing to with terrorism.

One pig was seriously scowling at me, so I smiled at him. I smile at lots of people. I'm a pretty ****in' happy guy since I moved to Ft. Lauderdale. He just stared at me and kept scowling. WtH? I was being friendly and polite.

Well Che, I'm not sure what Florida law states regarding the search of your bag, but I do remember reading some case in NM (I believe) where it was determined that if an officer asks/demands to see an ID, you are required to show it to them if you have it (I am in no way argueing for or against this, I'm just stating that I have seen it). Most likely the search of your bag had something to do with probable cause. What that probable cause would have been I don't know. Perhaps an officer saw you attempting to avoid the area and thought that you were actually trying to sneak away after you did something wrong, then got other officers to back him up just in case he was right and you might cause trouble.

As for the scowl, well, I admit that I do that too. Not really sure why. Perhaps its from over 7 years of constantly being untrusted, berated, lied too and scrutinized with a microscope (amongst other things). Please remember that just because your getting scowled at doesn't mean that your disliked, its usually that the person probably has alot of other unpleasent scenerios running through his head in an attempt to be as prepared for any eventuality that may araise.

This is great! Someone, not sure who, decided that the environment Che was in constutited a "public danger". Now if you dislike the vagueness of "public danger" perhaps you should attempt to alter the bill of rights so it fits your particular view.

And the weapon of choice for most criminals is violence.

A police officer friend of mine says the scariest thing in the world for him is pulling somebody over. For all he knows, the guy is armed and might take a shot at him.

Being a policeman is not a safe job. They take their lives in their hands EVERY TIME they check into work.
Maybe we should keep this in mind as we judge them

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

Scariest thing for me is to BE pulled over by the cops, or have a cop behind me, or anywhere around me.

If a criminal does something to me, then the police will nab him, or I can sue him in court, or something. If a cop plants drugs on me, or beats me, or locks me up for no reason, then its much harder to protect myself. Usually it'll come down to the cop's word against mine, and the courts always believe the cop.

Oh he shot me? Well he thought I was going for a weapon. Can you prove otherwise? Nope.

The police scare me.

Nah, that case in NM was that the person being questioned could be compelled to give his name if the law in his jurisdiction required, not produce an ID. Again, what the cop did for che was probably against the law, strictly speaking.

The police are an important part of society. As much as many would like to do without them, they are needed.
And whenever you are victim of a crime, you see how important they can be

Yes, there are some bad cops... just like there are bad people in all professions. But to paint all police as bad because of a few is just plain silly. Most policeman are good and a credit to the community.

Except when they police protests. Somethin' about a protest that gets a cops testosterone flowing. Despite the myth, the vast majority of protest violence is started by the cops, not the protestors.

I feel as though I need to be protected against anarchists in my neighborhood who use protests as a cover for violence. The cops are the ones for that job.

Documented evidence. At the FTAA protests a few years back, the police arrested Jaggi Singh, a well-known Canadian activist, for possession of an offensive weapon. The weapon in question was a particularly wheezy catapult, which was used by other protesters to fire small stuffed animals over the fence that the police had erected for the occasion. Singh was ambushed by plainclothes cops. This is the second time such a thing had happened to him: in the previous case he was arrested for using a megaphone. Unknown to the police, cameras captured both incidents. Both were "preventative arrests" which is illegal under Canadian law.

At the same protest Singh was first arrested at, police pepper sprayed peaceful protesters in an unnecessary and provocative act, all for the benefit of protecting the genocidal Indonesian president from having to see protest signs.

In Barcelona a few years ago, plainclothes police pretended to be protesters and started smashing windows, giving their brethren an excuse to baton the crowd.

Back in New Zealand, my brother was involved in a fees protest a few years ago. He and some other students occupied the university registry (this sort of **** goes on all the time). Eventually they agreed to leave, having made their point, and there was a protest outside to mark the end of the occupation. It was raucous, but everyone was behaving. The police were trying to move the crowd along and a policewoman fell over and broke her ankle. Half a dozen students attempted to help her up and signal for medical assistance. The police and media reported this as an assault on a policewoman. Their case collapsed when video of the event was shown on the news – the chick just falls over and the students next to her drop their signs and help her.

I've seen the police provoke and attack protesters. Some friends of mine got gassed in Quebec city and had rubber bullets fired at them. They weren't doing anything wrong.

To be fair, I have seen protesters throw things at police on a couple of occasions. On both occasions other protesters attempted to stop them doing it.

Most cops are decent, normal people. Apart from the racial profiling thing, they do a good job. I have witnessed one example of police brutality back home in my whole life – some cops goaded a guy into answering them back and then batoned him.

But, when our political overlords decide that they don't like the opinions of certain people being expressed in public, the police are drafted in to intimidate them and beat them up.
