Let's not forget the Bolsheviks originally opposed Lenin's call for revolution. If there's a Bolivian Lenin (and I don't think there is), the MAS could radicalize. I'm sure their youth are already doing so. Look for a split in the MAS.

Congress Session Fails – More Rumors of a Coup

Here is what we know. Congress has abandoned its plans for meeting. Members are stuck in their hotels and other locations in Sucre where miners and other protesters have blocked access to the airport. There are reports of troop movements in Santa Cruz and a strong belief among reliable sources here that a coup of some kind is possible tonight. We will do our best to keep you updated as things develop.

Chile's military budget is ten times Bolivia's.

If they invade, it's possible that someone would be quick enough to take him out of that misconception before the Chileans pwnz the sorry asses of the Bolivian army. (And navy. They've got one, believe it or not.)

Peru has beaten up on Bolivia. Note the old borders. (As an aside, Peru lost it's southern tail to Chile in the War of the Pacific, also).

It's a valid question, Vel. You're absolutely right, chances are, it's going to end in failure. Doesn't mean we can't have hope that it will turn out some other way.

Notice that the movement isn't being led by a communist organization, but by the workers and peasants themselves, though I'm sure that many of the leaders are communists of some sort. I don't know what that says.

In the past, the workers and peasants overthrew the governent and successfully established a democracy that lasted 12 years before the military overthrew it, so there is historical precident for things to turn out okay, at least for a little while. We also have the precident of Nicaragua.

Duh! When prices were kept artificially low they will rise back to the market rate when the artifical constraints are removed. That doesn't mean it wasn't a good move since NEW City and other big American cities were experiencing a wave of properties becoming slums. Property taxes and other costs kept rising at market rates yet all rents were frozen so landlords stopped putting money into apartment blocks. We're talking about everything from lightbulbs not being changed to major plumming problems not being fixed because economically landlords couldn't afford to do so.

If you **** with the market then in the end the market ****s you back. It's better to just let the market run its course and regulate to take off the rough edges.

A pity that the lesson of 20th century economics has been the opposite of this. Dear me... where did you learn this stuff?
