By now, most of you have heard what Durbin had to say about Gitmo. He compared the US troops conduct there to the Nazis with their death camps, Stalin's Gulag and Pol Pot's killing fields. Republicans are demanding an apology. Al Jazeera is front paging the quotes. Al Qa'ida is dancing with joy. American troops are in a mood to kill.
Durbin has refused to apologize and blames the controversy on a vast right-wing conspiracy. Do you agree? Is this all about the right-wing feigning false outrage, or are Durbin's remarks beyond the pale for a US Senator?

Haha, funny when people try to fit in "US are NAZI" and "I support the troops" together. I don't quite see how they fit, but then again, I'm just one of those Nazi Stalinist Khmer Rouge types.
Dick Durban isn't the only one to do Nazi Nazi, how many GWB = Hitler signs have we seen out there? Everyone wants the US to be guilty as sin, so it is. There is no debate about it, because no matter what is going on, folks want to bend it either way for an agenda.
The worst stuff in Gitmo that I have heard about is beatings. Now, beatings count as torture in my book, but they aren't very creative compared to the Nazi's, and more than half of America has probably grown up under "torture" conditions forced on them by their father.
Other "torture" at Gitmo? Loud music, sleep deprivation, stress positions, being chained to a floor.
Does anyone read the accounts of prisoners destroying their own Korans? or whacking off at the female guards?

Durbin's comments in full:
quote:
When you read some of the graphic descriptions of what has occurred here [at Guantanamo Bay]--I almost hesitate to put them in the [Congressional] Record, and yet they have to be added to this debate. Let me read to you what one FBI agent saw. And I quote from his report:
"On a couple of occasions, I entered interview rooms to find a detainee chained hand and foot in a fetal position to the floor, with no chair, food or water. Most times they urinated or defecated on themselves, and had been left there for 18-24 hours or more. On one occasion, the air conditioning had been turned down so far and the temperature was so cold in the room, that the barefooted detainee was shaking with cold. . . . On another occasion, the [air conditioner] had been turned off, making the temperature in the unventilated room well over 100 degrees. The detainee was almost unconscious on the floor, with a pile of hair next to him. He had apparently been literally pulling his hair out throughout the night. On another occasion, not only was the temperature unbearably hot, but extremely loud rap music was being played in the room, and had been since the day before, with the detainee chained hand and foot in the fetal position on the tile floor.
If I read this to you and did not tell you that it was an FBI agent describing what Americans had done to prisoners in their control, you would most certainly believe this must have been done by Nazis, Soviets in their gulags, or some mad regime--Pol Pot or others--that had no concern for human beings. Sadly, that is not the case. This was the action of Americans in the treatment of their prisoners. |
So, no, he wasn't saying anyone was Nazis. He said that the sight of the prisoner as described by and FBI agent wouldn't be out of place in a Nazi camp or a Soviet gulag. And considering that the methods used here were used by those people, he's absolutely right.
And his overall point is the real meat: We, as Americans, should be absolutely appalled at this kind of treatment of prisoners, and shame on anyone who isn't.
