Myrtle's murder is significant to him, as is the fact that this is when he discovered he was Slytherin's heir. He'd want to commemorate both events, adn what better way than to use his special plaque as a horcrux. | Dunno. Using his special diary, maybe?

But the way it was written, though, it seems to me, that he was more interested in finding out if it could be done multiple times. He'd already been thinking about this, which means he already knew something about it.
Whether or not he already knew how to cast the spell is just a guess. |
Seems pretty clear to me. He knows what they are and what they mean for him, but not how to make them.
[Slughorn]"The wizard intent upon creating a Horcrux would use the damage to his advantage: He would encase the torn portion —"
[Riddle]"Encase? But how — ?"
[Slughorn]"There is a spell, do not ask me, I don't know!"

Definitely could be the Award; we've got all sorts of possibilities to consider, don't we?
Harry
Nagini
Godric's sword
Other relic of Godric kept by the Potters as descendants
Relic of Ravenclaw
Something to do with Ollivander
Special Award for Service to the School
...anything else?

I agree, highly unlikely, but as the only identified relic of Gryffindor, it must be given at least a moment's consideration.

That could be how Harry is able to kill him without dying himself; however, I feel the fact that Voldemort is able to completely possess Harry at the end of Book 5 shows that there is still a piece of Riddle in Harry...

The look of triumph is definitely important... I think DD knew that Harry was somehow a horcrux (unbeknownest to Riddle), and he had hoped that the blood had removed Riddle's soul.
Book 5 would seem to suggest that it did not work in that manner.
What else could the look of triumph have meant?

quote: A thousand years ago or more
When I was newly sewn,
There lived four wizards of renown,
Whose names are still well known:
Bold Gryffindor, from wild moor,
Fair Ravenclaw, from glen,
Sweet Hufflepuff, from valley broad,
Shrewd Slytherin, from fen,
They shared a wish, a hope, a dream,
They hatched a daring plan
To educate young sorcerers
Thus Hogwarts School began.
Now each of these four founders
Formed their own house, for each
Did value different virtues
In the ones they had to teach.
By Gryffindor, the bravest were
Prized far beyond the rest;
For Ravenclaw, the cleverest
Would always be the best;
For Hufflepuff, hard workers were
Most worthy of admission;
And power-hungry Slytherin
Loved those of great ambition.
While still alive they did divide
Their favorites from the throng,
Yet how to pick the worthy ones
When they were dead and gone?
'Twas Gryffindor who found the way,
He whipped me off his head
The founders put some brains in me
So I could choose instead!
Now slip me snug about your ears,
I've never yet been wrong,
I'll have a look inside your mind
And tell where you belong! |
