I have this morning enjoyed two cups of Kenya Peaberry coffee and a large bowl of hot porridge oats, made with water, topped with semi-skimmed milk, Capilano honey and freshly ground cinnamon and nutmeg.

I am quite replete, despite having consumed it four hours ago.

I must admit, that sounds pretty decent. Had I the budget for such culinary upgrades, I might conceivably be more positive about the whole musli issue.

But I don't, so it sucks.

Marconi (even after going to back to Italy) was very fond of a cooked full English breakfast every day.

Barinthus, the point is that you need to eat more during your breakfast, it's the most important meal of the day. I personally can't stand oatmeal for breakfast, I end up trying to chew through half a plate and then throwing up. Bacon has loads of fat and taste; eggs and beans are good for protein; properly made tea has nice amount of caffeine in it.

IOW, it's all fat. If you're seriously building muscles, you don't really have to be scared of fat.

I usually have a bowl of cornflakes and milk and a glass of orange juice in the morning. If I am on an early shift this will be eaten at about 5:15am so I will have a couple of biscuits mid-morning, and then something for lunch and an evening meal - I don't tend to snack a lot. Alas afternoon tiredness is something that happens. If you eat a hearty lunch, then the draw of blood away by the digestive system will make you feel sleepy too.

Seriously though, I think some people worry far too much about food though...

English breakfasts are excellent! My problem, though, is that I can't eat that much food until I've been awake for a couple of hours. That means, on a weekday -- when I have to be out the door by 7 am -- I have to choose between food and sleep -- and sleep always wins.

Yes - it's hard to eat one that early.

The full 'working man's breakfast' was/is in many cases eaten by workers in the staff canteen who'd already been on their shift for an hour or two. Some toast and a cup of tea (stimulant, milk, sugar) and would get them out the door, and they'd eat properly when a big healthy appetite got worked up.

Right now I have sandwiches in the sandwich maker-baker.

One is with ham, one with chicken, both are with cheese and a slice of tomato. Later to be added are a slice of lettuce and spices. There I'll go for salt, pepper (red and black) aaand... something new, let me surprise myself.

Bon appetit. The whine is empty already, but here are still 4 beers in the fridge. Open a drinking thread? hmm.

Since I'm eating lunch right now while I'm reading this, it's a good time to note that Asian food (Thai, Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese) makes me less sleepy in the afternoon that the traditional American lunch.

My problem with Japanese food is that I don't like fish. But I can get a yummy Teppan box lunch with Australian beef for about $5.25 at a place around the corner from the embassy. Not cheap, but certainly reasonable.

Got spare money?

I bought so much meat today. I got two sirlon steaks; they were on sale, buy 1, get 1 free. I got 16 pork chops, same deal, and two round roasts, again, same deal. I also got a Botson butt (pork shoulder) at $1.69 a pound.

Right now the butt is sitting in a plastic baggie, soaking up some liquid smoke. Tomorrow I'll put a rub on it and let it sit for a day, then toss it in the slow cooker for some pulled pork.

Eight of the pork chops are marinating in buttermilk. Tomorrow I'm gonna dredge them in flour and pan fry those suckers. Four of the others will get stuffed and broiled, and I think I'll just roast the other four.

The roasts will get rolled in herbs and garlic and roasted, eventually.

I made a marinade from scratch and stuck the sirlons in that. That was dinner. I spent about $50 on meat today. I saved $50 on meat today too.

Isn't USD5.25 a truckload of $ in the Philippines?

It's a lot; for example, it's about half a day's wages for either our driver or our maid -- and we're told that we're overpaying them.

The thing is, there's not much of a middle class here, so prices in restaurants tend to jump from very cheap (generally for Filipino food, which I find inedible) straight to US prices (for restaurants catering to the Filipino elite and to expats).

Chicken adobo can be okay, but I've had better outside the Phils than in. And, honestly, I've never seen Crab Manila on a menu in Manila.

Filipino tastes run to the greasy and fatty, and use every part of the animal (pork here is often sold in packages with a sticker reading "skin still on!"as an enticement to buy). It's a peasant diet, I suppose, and not one that I've acquired a taste for.

This is 100% false. Heavy lifting combined with cardio is the BEST way to get your body into shape. Maybe you'll gain "weight", but you'll look leaner - which is all that matters.

Lifting weights don't burn fat, it burns sugar. You need a sustained period of aerobic exercise of at least 30 minutes to start burning fat. Lifting isn't going to give you that.

Some lifting is good because it builds muscles, which will help burning fat. However heavy lifting is just going to tire you out quickly.
