I am courious what is the cut off mark for poverty now days? To me poor means no food no water no electricty etc. If the fact that the reference to poor is no cable and no cell phone is the basis then i hardly call that poor. And I must say thes poor folks need to help themselves. If they want out of the ghetto then tasks must be made to at least an attempt to better them selves. I witnessed a application for food stamps from a lady that had more gold around her neck then i have had in my entire life. Not to mention the diamond rings on every one of her finger including thumbs. I thought girllll wtf man u got hungry kids hock that bling bling and feed them babies

Here's the table.

http://www.census.gov/hhes/www/pove...d/thresh04.html

$9,645 for one person in a household up to $39,048 for 9. All public assistance, Social Security, etc. counts toward this figure. Capital gains don't count toward it.

Mrs. Tuberski - the problem is for that one b*tch whose kids were less important than her jewelry (for her), how many working poor have you known that bust their buns, etc. to get ahead but simply cannot pull it off. Lack of day care, lack of help collecting child support, graduating schools illiterate or mental disabilities can make it hard to get ahead. Having a disabled child can make it almost impossible. I'll take every sod who doesn't deserve help and come up with hard working, struggling examples who do.

The problem is how do you nail that b*tch and still help out the hard working poor. It's actually why I oppose cash and food stamps, and instead support vouchers and WIC style programs. They are much harder for people like that to abuse, and can give the hard working poor a hand-up to get out of poverty. I'm also for making it easier for the non-custodial parent to cut custody in cases like that.

That's true.

For every lady like that Mrs. T, there are others going through the supermarket checkout with their food stamps, and/or government debit card, and feel humiliated doing it because they know people are staring at them and thinking stuff like, "get a damn job you lazy SOB!"

Guys you dont have to tell me about being poor. I lived it when i was going through nursing school. My ex husband and i just seperated i had my kids was working 40 hours a week in 3 days and going to school full time. My ex didnt give me a dam dime. I applied for food stamps and was denied cause i made to much money. I was like wtf my phone was turned off electric was bout to be cut off and i had no cell phone. End of the line for me was when my daughter who was 4 lost a tooth and i didnt have a dollar to put under her pillow. I took a second job finished school and now i am in the same boat. I find my self looking for a different type of work and try to figure if i want to go back to school

Mrs. Tuberski, have you ever gotten any child support? The reason I ask is that with many of the law changes it might be easier for you to collect. Even if you don't need it now, think about it as the kid's college fund. Plus I have a personal loathing for bastards like that.

But too many Republicans insist that deprived people are having the time of their life because they believe deprived people enjoy that kind of life.

I went to the attorney general after nursing school and asked for them to enforce the support order that was in my divorce. I only asked the courts to order 400 a month. Thats nothing for three kids. My ex had i not been nice about it would have to had to shell out 900 a month. I dont colect it anymore I told my ex to open an account for the kids and put the money in there. He has stopped that recently due to his new wife having two more children in the last 2 years. I have told him that he needs to keep up the payments to that account because with 5 kids now he is gonna need it for their college and that money is just for my kids.

I thought these were some especially interesting statistics from my Econ History book.

% Ownership of US households below poverty line in 1997 vs % Ownership of all US households in 1950.

First number is % of households below poverty level in 1997. Second number of % of all households in 1950.

Electricity-94vs99
Flush Toilet-76vs99
Refrigerato-80vs99
Television-10vs95
Telephone-79(in 1960) vs 88
Automobile-59vs 71
Air Conditioning-12(1960) vs 70
Washing machine-47vs58
Clothes Dryer-2vs 48
Dishwasher-2vs28

The text book is, " History of the American Economy 10th edition" by Gary M Walton and Hugh Rockoff.

The foot note from the statistics says:

Sources: U.S. Bureau of the Census, American Housing Survey for the United States in 1997; [I]US Bureau of the Census, "Housing Then and Now," http://www.census.gov/hhes/www/hous...tcensushsg.html

Really?

Most poor people in other countries do have things like digital TV, microwaves, etc.

Do you think that welfare claimers in Europe or the UK are living in the gutter...?

This is not a Dickens novel, come into the real world.

PS
Though, it depends if mean 'street-people poor' or just 'overworked clerk' poor.

Appliances aren't the whole story, as they are relatively cheap, especially these days.

In many developing countries, there are mud huts with electricity, cell phones, and TVs. The housing itself however is frequently overcrowded, deteriorating, near heavy pollution, etc. Education, healthcare, and other public services also lag in these areas.

Yep, DanS would post a thread every month at the beginning of the month, titled "Let the Good Times Roll: X number of jobs created in (name of month)".

This month has been the first in a while where there has been no such thread, though I did start a differently titled other thread
