Ted, just pointing out that Saras is right. Doesn't mean the actualyl really really poor in the whole world poor standard in the US aren't poor, they have it just as bad as the rest. But as for the 'poor', that was, what I believe Saras was talking about, and he's right and you're wrong. And you wanted to prove the toughness of Bronx, and while it is tough, you're still wrong it being THE place. |
No, you just put opinions into my mouth that I never wrote, and then argued against them, that's not being honest.
1) I never claimed that the poor in the US were somehow "worse" than anyone else
2) I never claimed that the Bronx was THE place either, you just brought in that example out of nowhere.
So really what you just did was setting up a strawman and then argued against it.

quote: is both absolute and relative, but conservatives only want to look at relative poverty in America |
It is the exact opposite. Conservatives are opposed to including whole groups of people as "impoverished" when they are completely capable of providing for most of their needs, while perhaps not at the level of comfort they want.
If you have a home, can feed your kids, and can aford basic health care you are not "poor." But by including millions of people who are just not middle class, you dilute all the money and programs to help out the poor, and the ones who really need it get a fraction that usually is not enough to accomplish anything meaningful. This is perhaps not the reason conservatives don't like aritficialy inflating the number of poor, but it sure as hell is an effect.
The left is all about including everyone they can below the poverty line, for political and ideological reasons. If they are not poor you can't crusade for them, and god forbid the left be seen as just another party controled by rich people, for rich people (which they are).
Just so we are clear Che, the relative poor number is far greater than the actually poor. Why would conservatives prefer a number that inflates the number of poor (artificially or not).

So, I trip all the time PLUS others trip too (to mine)!
Mrs TUbes, not sure. I know what you mean and I agree with that. But not ALL poor are poor because they didn't have the chance to make their lives better. Sure, after they burned all bridges and went their own way, became poor in the process and now they don't have any chances, hey .. that's the way it goes, but what I'm saying is, not everyone is poor because they never had the chance, or because, or even because they were so unfortunate at some point. MANY are like you describe, not all..

The Federal poverty line is a ****ing joke. I can't imagine trying to raise three people on an income of $14K. Hell, I couldn't afford to live on $14K.
Ideally, people should only spend a certain amount of their income on rent, food, etc. Yeah, but rent and food aren't charnged to you by precentage, but in real terms. If you live, say, in NYC, I would challenge you to find an apartment in a safe neighborhood for $14k a year. The poor spend a much greater percentage of their income on food, etc.
Do poor people have things like tvs, etc. Yes, usually hand me downs from friends or relatives or they "fell of the back of a truck." Some people were better off before, then lost their jobs. I don't see why some people think the poor should sell off everything and live in absolute misery before being worthy of the term poor.
