Also, it´s not all that bad.

From 1997 through 2006, the IMF expects Germany's economy to have grown 1.3% per annum. That's only marginally better than Japan's "lost decade." A quarter of the Eastern Germans want the communists back, for God's sake.

In fact we still have the strongest European economy and things start looking brighter now.

Wrong and wrong. Luxembourg, Norway, Switzerland, Iceland, Ireland, Austria, Belgium, the UK, the Netherlands, and Finland have stronger economies. Germany's economy is expected to grow only 0.8% this year, down from 1.7% growth last year.

I don´t think the current problems are solvable at all without dismantling the foundations of the economic system.

Well, what are you waiting for? The apocalypse?

They've overtaken the US. Japan is third, China fourth, France fifth. China is projected to become #1 by 2010 though.

How much is due to the EU being great for moving goods and services around. Or is that exports out of the EU?

This is the biggest non-accomplishment accomplishment that Schroeder cites. Hey, let's highlight the fact that we have an industrial economy in a post-industrial world!

Nothing to be embarrased about, but when coupled with the fact of 1.3% average growth for the decade, it just highlights the fact that Germans themselves don't have much of an appetite for buying what's being produced.

Could be largely due to the stagnant and/or falling real estate prices. In countries like the UK, Spain or Australia that appears to have been the main factor behind strong consumptions growth.

Who knows? But I do think it's very important to punish the politicians for poor results, even if their impact isn't direct (although I think it is more direct in Germany, than the US, for instance). Schroeder should have been kicked to the curb long ago. The German voters aren't doing their jobs.

Circumstances makes the man. Obviously Schröder couldn't tell his central banker to blow up some nice bubbly bubbles to get consumption going, and he had to counter anti-reformists within his own party and an antagonistic CDU-controlled bundesrat.

At least the man has guts and I think that's worth more than whatever Merkel promises.

Results are what matter. For whatever reason, Germany with Schroeder as chancellor doesn't work right. Maybe he doesn't inspire confidence in Germans of all stripes. Who knows.

We're doing OK. Even if you think that Bush is living off the good policies of Clinton, the structure we have is working, and should be perpetuated (although I think the GOP congress should now be voted out of office for other reasons).

Seriously, if that's all there is to democracy we could just as well get rid of this voting and replace it by software that automatically boots any chancellor that doesn't get X growth and Y unemployment.

The federal budget swung over 4% in the negative, average GDP growth was lower, NYSE plunged, unemployment rose and to boot it all: the WTC collapsed. Results is what matters.

No, there are other considerations. Everybody's situation is different. But failures cry out for democratic punishment. This is elementary.

With Bush there are considerations, but with Schröder not?

Bush should have had the foresight to install SAM-batteries near the WTC: he's the president of the US godammit.

And if that negative situation persisted, then Bush should have been booted out of office. But the economy put up a 4.2% growth rate last year and unemployment is falling. There have been no new major terrorist attacks in the US so far.

Are you seriously questioning whether Schroeder is a failure? That Germany is doing poorly?
