Of course you <em>could</em>, as I understand it each template has a colour scheme associated with it, which you can put into a stylesheet and load as appropiate. I am pretty sure you can use PHP to generate that.

Just a thought.

Full PM-box? Change here!

IE 5.5, Win98 SE

I seem to be unable to vote in polls - I just get a white screen with what looks like a valid address, and checking afterwards reveals that my vote as indeed not counted. This happens in all polls, including newly created ones, so it is not that they have been closed.

Also, I am still getting the "Administrator: You MUST revert you modifyoptions template" message when I try to change my avatar (and probably my options - this applied to that as well last time I tried).

actually, the color schemes are independent from the template, and the style sheet info would go to the template. these allows two templates to be combines with three color schemes and produce six styles...

Increase Your PM Length

Mark, are you aware if this bizarre time problem Eli created a thread about? http://apolyton.net/forums/showthre...;threadid=20387

I just had it again, my post shows up in the thread nearly 3 hours earlier than the actual time I made it. http://apolyton.net/forums/showthre...;threadid=20410

EDIT: this particular post has the problem too, it's actually made 3 hours later than the time indicates.

There is something wrong with the Servertime. Read the news.

I guess it should be corrected by now, but I'm used to delays.

To post something since the upgrade needs a lot of time - a waste of time and of course money you pay while your are online just for waiting = nothing. That doesn't make any fun.

Maybe Markos you should take a second or third look on the code of the forum, before the forum upgrade the speed was no problem. In ME4 I also tried it with cookies - these damn little spies without any effect on the speed (I also enabled them in my profile). For me there is no difference between CTP2 light style and default style. Please fix the code I think this was mentioned here already.

I had three ME4 windows trying to load this page now all of them gave up. Apolyton was great before the upgrade please make it great again and greater.

Suffering from ads?

MG,

1. Are you using a proxy server? It might be a problem with that.
2. Why would you have 17 windows open? You should know that slows down the server.
3. If your new post doesn't show up try reloading, or forces the browser to load from the server instead of the cache (NS6 only, IIRC). If not flush both the memory and disk caches and reload.
4. That's IE4, not ME4.

Markos,

Can't you have two stylesheets, one for the template and one for the colour?

Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

Today something is different I am now 7 minutes online and I came to this page very fast. I also open 12 more windows just to try it out and only two window weren't loaded succeessfully. I opened a new window in the hope this load the page successfully. But it didn't so I opened the next window and so on. Yesterday I was quite annoyed about the slow speed it took me one hour to post my message. But I didn't post that if I am not interesting in this page.

Urban Ranger:

1. I am using a proxy server that's true, maybe it cause some trouble but that shouldn't cause a huge problem like loading times of hours.

2. I usually opend three browser windows in the old forum without any problems. 17 browser windows will slow down the server but not so dramatically that you need hours that a window is finished after 10, 20, ... minutes. I tried it today without any major problems. I don't know why that was working, today.

3. I think my browser would be faster if it would load the stuff from the memory. But yesterday I tried to post here and nothing happend as I clicked on the Submit Reply button. Trying to reload in this state of posting could cause a double post I wanted to avoid this without any success. But I wanted also be shure that this was posted. I had no chance to see it, yesterday, because the loading time was very slow and I only the the message that I was successful to post here at my second trial. Than I gave up. But one favour you could do for me Markos would be to delete my double post here in this this thread that I wanted to avoid without any success. There is no need to have post twice in one thread and it doesn't help us and I didn't made it on purpose.

4. IE4 OK thanks. But maybe I should find another name for it like M$IE4 but that's my opinion about Microsoft and doesn't belong to this thread.

There is a new contribution about Settlers and Engineers that has about 300k (and it may grow): 400k would be enough.

(With 200k the article may be split into two parts, but it is not perfect.)

Browse Apolyton AD-FREE

Martin,

1. Depending on status of the proxy server you are using you could be entirely cut off from the Web. It is just one of the factors however.

2. Your speed to Apolyton is determined by many factors, for example speed of the server and network congestion. If you want to know where the bottleneck is use the traceroute (tracert on Windoze machines) command. This will show you the speed an IP packet travels along each hop (link between two servers). The lower the number, the better.

3. It does, but sometimes browsers may not recognise that a webpage has been updated and will load the old version from the memory or disk cache. To stop that from happening you need to flush (empty) the caches.

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

I no longer have width problems with the forum pages, the columns now seem to resize themselves politely. Thank you Mark (&/or whomever else).

Edit: forget the below paragraph as it is working normally today (Sat Jun 9). ; either it got fixed or my computer did; thanks.

I'm still getting load problems with the first ad - it never finds it and after a long (several minutes at least) period, it gives up with the "IE cannot open the internet site .... " message. The fact that I'm still getting it probably means it is something about my browser, etc, as I expect that if everyone had been getting it, it would have had more priority - on the other hand, you have been having more than your fair share of trouble lately, so maybe not. Anyway my system is still:
Win98; 1024x768.
Browser (IE) says it is 4.72.3612.1713 ;SP2;3283;

If that 3 hour time change keeps happenning, what are your thoughts on relaxing the anti-spam thing during those episodes so that people who just posted don't get locked out for 3 hours until the clock catches up. I don't know if you ever get attacked or not, but if you cut out that 45 second restriction, you might find out whether you actually need to worry (if you don't already know).

Exactly, I mean existing posts.

Edit:
Could you allow a <B>html file</B> as an extension?
My idea about transforming long posts (as "Info: diplomats and spies" thread) into attachments wouldn't work well otherwise.

Slowwthinker,

There are quite a number of web hosting services that provide indivduals with free spaces for personal webpages. The most famous one being Geocities but there are many others.

I don't think you should post long posts here. Put them up at a free web hosting service and post a link here. 300K is a LOT of text. Are you sure a lot of peopel will read that?

Markos,

The "Reply with Quote" function doesn't include the time and date of the quoted post. Could you correct that? Thanks.

I don't know. Personally I hate to read something of that size. I rather read a few smaller documents. It's much easier to mark your progress since I can end sessions between articles. Very hard to do that for large online articles.

Anyway, do you need all that HTML formatting? Couldn't you do it with just plain text? Or alternatively, create PDF files from your documents and provide links to them?

That should be possible, because I had some trouble with Opera5. I wasn't able to attach a file with this browser. After my second failure with Opera5 I was successful with Netscape6. The effect was two useless extra posts for me, because I wasn't able to attach a file to an existing post.

By the way Markos I want to change my signature (I know I leave the topic) and Dale is also waiting to see his files in the CTP2 database, unfortunatly you promissed him to update the DB soon for four weeks.

If you want to see the result of my trials here is my thread:

Maybe you are also interested in this attachment. It deals with something broken on the CTP2 pages. For more information see my thread (I typed enough that isn't on topic in this thread.)

Tired of ads?

Chowlett,

So you're saying that after you push the "Vote" button you end up staring at a blank screen?

Martin,

Unable to add attachments seems to be a browser specific intermittent problem. With Moz 0.9 I could do it sometimes but not always. With IE4 I can do it all the time. I suggest that when you attach a file, check the thread to see if that has actually occurred.

SlowThinker,

Even if I view a large HTML document offline from cache there is still no easy way to mark my progress. PDFs are somewhat better because I can attach notes to them. I still hold that large documents should be broken down into smaller pieces no more than one or two screens.

Browse Apolyton AD-FREE

Slowthinker,

It would be, but you get more people reading your stuff that way. Depending on the amount of formatting you want to add there might not be a lot of additional work. You can always use stylesheets to simply your tasks.

Chowlett,

That also happened to be before. Repeated application of "reload" worked for me IIRC.

Support Apolyton, buy Galactic Civilizations

Well, I've given up and turned off almost all of the new goodies. I like my new avatar, but I just don't have time to wait for new pages to load.
