Yes, the platform is going to be MGE designed with PBEM in mind. Note that if you pick a certain battle or something (like Pirates) where you CAN'T do PBEM, then it'll still be accepted. However, I think there's a wide enough range of wars, battles, stories, to go around for some excellent PBEM scenarios.

Also, as of now, the timeframe has been expanded from 1500 AD to 1801 AD. That's as far as i'm expanding it. Any more and you REALLY move out of the AoS era.

I am, right now, putting together the official rules, useful links, a set of maps and other stuff for the contest which will be posted by either Friday or Saturday. On the weekend i'll be able to HTML'ize it all and put it on a website for easy reference.

If there are any skilled map makers, or people who have a nice hidden collection of maps.......I am looking for a map of a very specific region of Europe. None of the maps I've found on poly or CivFan are ideal. Alternatively, if there's anyone who knows how to get those utillites that claim to be able to slice out a certain part of map to work, that would be fine too.

I thought the platform would not be specified as long as it was PBEM compatible? I don't use MGE, I use ToT.

Put an end to popups!

AS somebody has said before, I believe that you shouldnt close the contest to PBEM only, because your are making smaller the posibilities as other kind of amphibious scenarios (per example Nemos SEcond Front couldnt participate because it cannot be played as PBEM), I believe that the better choice would be Multiplayer (this one are usually good for PBEM) and not Multiplayer

I'm going to try to make a scenario for the contest. So far I only made a map and a really simple WWII scenario, but since I figured out how to change the gifs I should be able to produce a resoaneble scenario. I already have an idea and a homemade map I can use. And with all you experienced guys around getting a little help shouldn't be to difficult.

Good luck to you all

Hopefully the Scenario League's Design Tips might be of help too.

Has someone done a discussion paper on the essential elements of scenario design for PBEM vs traditional single player games?

No, but I was planning on doing one...

Techumseh, you sure you can't do that on an MGE platform? It's much more common than ToT is and much more compatible to the PBEM genre. Besides that, ToT is chock full of bugs...

War Void,

I think it would be a great to produce such a paper, and CivFanatics I'm sure would be happy to host it (seeing we've seemingly continued to have no joy with the people overseeing the server that hosts the League's site).

ToT is full of bugs? Well ... a few.

(Unfortunately) I skipped MGE, and went from FW to TOT too Techumseh.

Echoing my earlier position - a great initiative, and I hope this contest will be a success.

I know it's more common, but it's also more limited ... yourself!

Seriously, I thought there was no arguement with the idea of letting the contestant determine the platform. Is there a problem with having a ToT-equipped judge? BTW, it's fully PBEM capable.

How long does the average PBEM game last? 50 Turns? 150? 250?

also, about how many moves are made in the average turn.

Get a bigger avatar today!

Popular PBEM's seem to run roughly 150 turns. Tho i've seen longer and shorter. I think, basically, it's up to the designers discretion.

Techumseh, it's not a big problem, except, that on an 18k dialup (which is what i'm using), and on this laptop, I won't be able to download and judge the scenario due to the normal ToT scenario size (which, IIRC, is quite big). Therefore, the judging of such scenarios would rely on only a partial team, resulting in partial results....

Unless of course we can find more judges and i'll simply be the...errr....referee...

Cam, i'm planning on ordering a new computer as soon as the evil, capitalist, moronic government decides to mail my income tax cheque to me.... So, who knows, maybe I WILL finally be able to update SLeague *prays*.

I'll refrain from adding various extra-large graphics files. Without them or sound files, zipped, it'll be less than 1 MB.

Deadline will be December 1st, 2002. Max zip file size will be 1.5mb. A lot of playtesters will be needed to test the PBEM's. Either that or i'll be spending late nights playing the scn's by myself from all sides...

An income tax rebate ... ahhh the good old days ... I remember them.

I found the problem with updating the League's site is not with the SLeague editors and their computers (confirmed by St. Leo's unsuccessful attempt to update the site), but with the servers that Apolyton is hosted on.

As much as I think Dan and Markos are terrific guys doing a hell of a good job , I wish that they could address this seeing that my attempts were unsuccessful.

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

I think that all three main platforms (FW, MGE and ToT) should be accepted in the contest. There are not enough PBEM scenarios for ToT now and the SDC hopefully will change that.

BTW, all my next scenarios after TSFE2 will be for ToT anyway.

Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

Collaboration is normally prohibited in SDC contests. I think some written rules would be helpful before people invest lots of time in something which may turn out to be contrary to other people's idea of what's allowed. The rules for SDC#3 are still posted on the Hodadian Awards site, here: http://hac.apolyton.net/sdc.shtml

In this contest, a collaboration was allowed for the first time for Test of Time entries ONLY, because of the extra work involved. In any case, no collaborative entries were received.

How can this be? Is there any scenario around, which has been done without the work of several people involved? -I mean, we all use each others graphics, sound work, and generally steal others ideas with both arms and legs. -Then there are the more coordinated efforts, which feature different people working on different aspects of the scenario (like someone providing graphics for someone elses work). But essentially, its the same thing. I think I have yet to see a scenario which has been made solely by one person, i.e. something not done by any other person than the author.

Ha! That's what you think

Personally, I don't see any problem with joint submissions. Given that we've got 8 1/2 months (!!!) to complete the scenarios, any benefits derived from two people working together will be pretty minor.

And yes, I also wonder about the fact that teamwork is/was only allowed for ToT, what were the reasons, and is it the same this time? I personally would have no problem if it would be allowed for everyone, perhaps with one restriction - one should not be involved in several scns for the contest. But since only one scn is still enough work, this should be no problem...
