Gav, a question. Some people understood that you are actually serious about the 500 USD prize - is it true or not?

Solver, I joke about many things, but never money - there is a prize of USD 500 for the winner of this competition, I will send it by Western Union within 24 hours of the Competition being finished. I've also asked one of our more wealthy Apolytoners if they would like to contribute to the prize fund, but all I can say is the MINIMUM winners prize will be USD 500.

Anyway where was I.... A 100 dollar bill walks into a bar and asks for a Beer, the barman says who cent you, the dollar bill replies I dunno but I think I better go change first..

So the prize is serious, thanks, helps a lot. In fact, I must still mention that ppl in Eastern Europe are not that wealthy. 500 USD is a monthly wage for many here, and a pretty good one.

Well Gav, what about asking some more people to contribute? I don't think many would like to, but who knows.

Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

It would be good to see a bigger Prize fund, I've asked one guy that I know has fairly substantive means if he will likewise contribute. If 3 or 4 more people contributed then it would be good to have a list of prizes. I like the idea of a Trophy for the winner too.... After all this is really supposed to attract the very best CTP players, and it would be great to see this run annually.

I like to think that USD 500 would be an incentive for anyone to want to enter, but if someone is prepared to add to this make a first prize of say 1000USD, and if one or two would sponsor prizes for second and third place I think that would attract more people still..

Yeah, that's right, but, of course, winner should get the most - money and, I hope, an Apolyton trophy.

As for running this annually I like the idea very much, but I see it tough due to the time needed to actually complete the games.

Anyway, anyone joining the contest? I see noone yet .

Emails certainly are in place. I'm still confused about the qualification - in fact, anyone can join, and there's no way I could check if the candidate deserves the get in, for I don't know everyone, so... hey, we could just doom everyone and get a two-player tourney .

- There will be no cheats!!! All games will be fully moderated, results declared after a turn by turn check.... Yeh I played Paul, took two of his cities, had 150 SOLS bearing down on him with Subs following, and he had to go, I know that it will probably be one of you guys that wins... But you won't find players like me as easy as we used to be...

We will all be using the same patches in the game, especially as money is involved... Patches 1.2 & 1.21 yeh. Welcome Yoda - I see u just posted...

Solver will set the rules, but it is agreed that this will not be a knockout tournament... everyone will play everyone else...

One more thing there is a multiplayer strategy guide somewhere on this thread, it would be great if you guys contributed... It helps everyone improve their game

Dragon recommended you to be in on this, there is only Doom and Paul missing so far, welcome aboard!

The league of players will have to be formalised along with the rules. Solver will specify the rules, but essentially there will be no cheats or tricks allowed, probably a standardised map for all games, and no results will be declared for each game until all the saves have been examined. Please bare in mind that some Play By Email Players will join the competition, and they will play much slower than MP players, so be patient with them!

Whats about exclusions: Wonders, nukes,....
Perhaps without pirating? Its almost impossible to play with labyrinth and Londons...
SO it would be good to exclude wonders

rules Put an end to popups!

It's your show Gav, but I would like to make a few recommendations. First, I wouldn't worry about the rush-buy problem. If everyone uses it, there is no advantage. You could simply make it 100 gold starting which would effectively eliminate the problem early. Second, wonders should really be excluded. Otherwise, if someone steps on a ruin early and gets a nice tech/wonder option, the game will end up being won by luck (between close players) rather than skill.

After all, aren't you looking for the "best" ctp player? I hope you will consider removing wonders to make things as even as possible so that skill rules the day.

Suffering from ads?

There will be no ruins yoda... the idea of the competition is to find out who is the best at CTP, not who is the best at CTP without Wonders. Apolyton as a site are the host for this competition, and this site has outlawed all trick use, so unfortunately, unless Solver rules differently, there will be no rush-buy switching. Solver will no doubt specify the rules in due course... But it is a great idea to discuss all the elements of the rules now and then work it from there.

I must admit, I think Wonders can skew the game badly... I don't play online with wonders, or piracy... But you have to remember there is a second group playing who will be PBEM players, who would expect to see wonders.. I think these things have to be discussed.

Question1
Hmm the host get the wonder because he built his capital 1 turn before the other player does? (Laby=> trade => nukes => win!!)
Question2
Is it allowed to rush-buy a market and switch it to a temple?

rule thoughts Support Apolyton or Terrorists Win

I still don't really see this as a "cheat", but if that is the wish of the organizers, so be it. It will make for an incredible amount of work to review "all" saved games, turn by turn, player by player. The amount of time required is enormous.

About wonders, perhaps a vote by all players could set the rule for this. It has been a very long time since I have played with wonders in a game, especially the game tipping ones. Guess I'll have to brush up on these... LOL

Piracy: I don't have a problem with piracy, but for the non-host player, losing trade routes can cause serious greif as there are bugs that do not always set the correct number of caravans. Often, the game will have to be saved and reloaded to solve the problem.

Pillaging: Go for it...

Here is an interesting rule that we have been using of late: SOL's can't bombard cities. CTP has a bit of a unit imbalance with SOL's and this solves the problem. However, it's not a serious problem, just one that allows the game to extend further into modern age tech (or higher) instead of becoming a huge SOL battle.

Maybe we should play everyone twice, home and away...

I see your point regarding Wonders, my PERSONAL preference is no wonders, but I am not setting the rules...

The second question.. there is nothing to stop you changing within the same category (units, structures, or wonders) as nothing is gained, so you can rush buy all the markets you want and switch to temples... Great tactics, I can see you will be a difficult opponent..
