The Cardinals backtracked from "zero tolerance" to two strikes and your out.

IMHO, this is completely unacceptable.

True, but also another reason to let priests marry, unless you want all homosexual priests.

At least with marriage-minded priests, the likelihood of them also being gay and/or pediophiles would seem to be less. Not that the 2 are the same.

Being a priest is hard. If they wanted an easy job, they should do themselves a favor and leave the Church.

It's utterly absurd that catholic priest can't marry. Any other religion allows its priests to marry. In the medieval ere, the pope had children and it shocked no one. The gallican priests (French variation of catholicism, not very spread even in France) swear they'll remain celibate, but not abstinent.

Well tell me Dino, from a logical point of view, how does having a wife or a lover prevent a priest from doing their job?

Sure would beat them molesting innocent little boys if you ask me.

They should be able to marry. Its ridiculous that celibate priests give young couples marriage counseling.

It's a stupid rule... and has no foundation in the Bible or Jesus's teachings. It was implemented much later. In the old days... the first son was the heir to the fathers estate... the second son went into the priesthood... and any other sons usually went off to war to earn their own fame and fortune (the crusades were just an excuse to get rid of potentially troublesome sons)

By not allowing priests to marry... it solved the problem of the second son not having any children who could disrupt the claims of the children of the first son if he were to die before his father.

That isn't really a problem anymore

My daughter was molested. She reported this to higher authority who did nothing. Next, a friend of hers was raped.

"Two strikes" does not protect children!

I'm still not sure how you people jump from dealing with pedofiles to calling for married priests. I don't see how one follows the other.

You don't see a relationship between forced abstinence and pedofelia Dino?

These people are human. Theyre not robots. All of those repressed feelings and desires need to come out somewhere. And that somewhere is often in the helpless children.

Its like the guys who turn to sex with other guys in prison. Were they gay before they went in? No. But years upon years without any sexual contact or intimacy is enough to drive anyone nuts. And so people turn to whats available to them.

I'm saying the guys that fondle little boys probably would never had these desires if they weren't in the situation they were in. Its an enviornment problem for them, not a genetic one.

The legislation that effectively ended optional celibacy for priests came from the Second Lateran Council under Pope Innocent II in 1139.

No, I don't. In light of the fact that the % of pedofile priests likely matches the % in the population at large, I don't see how that leap can be made.

Wether abstinence encourages paedophilia or not, they should be allowed to marry. A religious institution should be doing all it can to promote one of our highest ideals - family life.

Well if they're not gay, the same argument could be used to say that the priests arent pedophiles!

Being gay isn't a mental disorder. Pedophilia is and I've seen no scientific research that states that it is caused by abstenence.
