Until we progress further, I am following DaveV's advice: maximize food at size 1, then maximize shields.
1700 Straybow Warriors sent to Scouseholme, Settlers road near Mercatia
1650 Probing Babylonian territory with Chariot
1600 Warriors arrive Scouseholme; send entertainers to the glaciers to
wrestle with Walruses. I hear their acrobatics come in handy when
their spears break.
1550 RMIUD sends forth Settlers; Hut gives RMIUD some Horsies
1500 Sarzana produces Settlers; Horsies discover PersepolisBarbarians!
(Bye, bye Horsies. They fought valiantly, but were slain ruthlessly.)
1400 Scouser wise men stumble upon a scheme to get people to worship gods,
and which somehow involves the capture and training of Elephants.
Clever chaps, eh?
At a loss to see where to go next, I direct the "wise men" to break
rocks in the gravel pit until they come up with an idea.
1350 I suddenly realize that I have fewer than 50 shields to go on Colossus,
so rushing a caravan is moot. Buy statue. Shoulda sent those distracting
jugglers away sooner.
1300 I, Straybow the Great, have completed the Colossus!
Generations shall rejoice!
I establish Utica, and the Scousers are commanded to rejoice.
1250 Scousers now number 200,000! I have determined that a Great Canal shall
be built, chaining the lakes to the north to connect the Scousus Sea
with the arm of the Great Sea to the NE of RMIUD. The terminus city of
Erie is established, to link with Utica and future city of Albany.
My successors shall stand in awe of my wisdom!

As the Straybowite dynasty comes to a close, the reigns of the kings are chronicled. Despite the warnings of historians examining the so-called "six thousand year dynasty," Straybowite Kings ignored science and spent lavishly upon the great statue of the god Bacchus Gitus erected in Scouseholme.
One historian noted a curous reference in a dusty old document about "restarting after discovering that the wrong set of rules were in force." While no record of what happened before the "restart" (whatever that may mean) can be found, this historian is certain that initial efforts before the restart did, indeed, concentrate on science.
Straybow I (-1752 to -1708)
Straybow the Sensible (-1708 to -1639)
Straybow the Juggler (-1639 to -1611)
Straybow the Mostly Ignored (-1611 to -1592)
Straybow, "The Ivory King" (-1592 to -1555)
Straybow the Tottering Old Fool (-1555 to -1462)
Straybow VII (-1462 to -1433)
don Don the Odd Man Out (-1433 to 1401)
Straybow the Distracted (-1400 to -1361)
Straybow the Great (-1361 to -1288)
Straybow the Mad (-1288 to ??)
Official records say little about Straybow I, perhaps because of that "restart" interfering with record-keeping. Perhaps his successors were ungrateful for the efforts required to assume the throne. The last of the "six thousand year" dynasty died without issue, and it is reported that of more than sixty royal cousins who might have contested Straybow's claim all met with hunting accidents the preceding fall.
Straybow himself said that the '53 season was known for having a "livelier arrow" than previous hunting seasons. All contemporary historians were without dissent. Some cite the switch to the use of hawthorn for bows as well, which increased the range and made hunters more likely to overshoot their prey.
The only royal cousin to survive STYOM the Last was one Petros Rosos, who had been previously banned from the royal hunts for gambling. Straybow insisted that Petros be admitted into the hunting Hall of Fame for his outstanding career performance in the field. The King declared, "His only offense was betting against STYOM the Last in the archery contest. Which I won." Petros would only comment that he was lucky to have been locked in a dungeon for six years and equally glad to be freed by the King.
Of Straybow VII, no record remains. Even his nickname has been forgotten. Some say that his heir, don Don, was irritated at being given such a silly name and burned all court scrolls and defaced monuments his father had erected.
Rumor has it that Straybow the Mad was travelling in the North, with military engineers scouting the route for his Great Canal project. Some say that his distant relation, La Fayette, had him slain so that he could claim the throne. Official records say that the Royal Company was ambushed by a small band of barbarians from Persepolis, but no reports of raiders has been found in archives recovered from RMIUD and Utica.
Surely, barbarian raiders returning to Persepolis with jewels and apparel captured from the King's baggage train would have bragged loudly of their deeds. The later conquest of that city would have discovered the lost articles. La Fayette claimed that the Royal Scepter was never taken out of the capital, and thus it came to his hand, yet Straybow the Mad had insomnia and only slept when clutching it.
La Fayette is from Sarzana and was reported to have travelled north in the week before Straybow the Mad's disappearance. La Fayette claimed that he was visiting his aunt in Utica. The peasants who reported seeing him could not confirm the accounts when questioned later.
In fact, only a one-armed man could be found for questioning, and the inquisitors were sure he had two arms the first time they questioned him. He claimed that he only needed one arm to do his job, polishing boots for La Fayette. The inquisitors thought he had been a smith when they first questioned him, but obviously they were mistaken since a smith would need two arms.

The truth must be said:
La Fayette's boots don't need any polishing. The 2-armed smith polishes the horseshoes of La Fayette's horse. That's all.

Yes, he has one, with a legion onboard, in order to convince those we meet that they had better give their precious gold.
