Hmm. If you're worried about diseases from Martian creatures, why aren't you worried about getting diseases from dinosaur fossils?
After all, bacteria can survive that long. And I'd be more worried about earth based creatures with similar protein strains than a bunch of martian bugs.

True, but their habitat is well below the surface, hence the lack of a dense atmosphere and an intense Van-Allen belt would not be nearly as important.

Well, than. If the Canadians value that coastline and its attendent claim on the oceans, why did they kill their nuke sub program in the 80's (they were gonna build/buy some.)
Besides...some of that coastline is pretty crappy coastline. Not "blue water". (i.e. not coastline in the winter... )
