Ice oceans discovered on Mars! Support Apolyton, buy GURPS/ Alpha Centauri

http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/sc...000/2009318.stm

It seems that Nasa has discovered ice crystals less than a metre below the surface of Mars.
This makes the planet even more likely to be colonised at some point in the future. Mars, here we come!

I'm impressed. This thread took 5 posts to go from the discovery of more ice on Mars to another ME thread.

Suffering from ads?

You're missing the most important point. If its true for anywhere in our solar system, the presence of water on mars is a strong indicator of the potential for life. Now, we may have to really worry about martian microorganisms making their way back to earth at some point in the future.

The article said 500 meters deep over the surface. That sounds like less than the amount of water in US oceans.

Assuming Mars is not all flat, there ought to be a fair amount of continent space.

Why assume they would be a problem. As pathogens go, they are unlikely to be any worse than what is already on Earth.

Theoretically thats true. But the effects of microorganisms entering a new niche can be potentially catastrophic i.e. HIV and the viral hemorrhagic fevers. Bugs there could be a huge biomedical boon, but not without significant risks.

AFAIK - For any primordial extra-terrestrial micro-organism to have the ability to cause illness in Earth organisms by chance is small. They have not evolved to "prey" on Earth life-forms - there is no compatability.

You forgot that Mars isn't very flat. Enough water to cover the surface in a uniform 500 metres wouldn't cover 90% of Mars by the time it had all flowed downhill; more like 15%.
