1770 Suffering from ads?

A French Man of War blockading the channel has been sunk by the Dover squadron. Valuable experience has been gained for our rebuilt and untested Navy.

Owing to a surprise attack by French forces on the supply lines of our besieging army outside Paris, our heavy artillery has been turned on the them instead. They were blown out of their positions without loss, but the expenditure of ammunition for some of our biggest guns will force a further delay in the final attack on the French Capital.

(Does anyone know why a fortress cannot be pillaged? The MP game seems to insist on a mine-farmland-crops-road-fortress order.)

The interval has been used to bring even more guns over the channel, as no doubt very many Frenchmen are digging in to defend their beloved city. However, some potential reinforcements have been destroyed outside Paris, and we have extended our siege-lines.

In the meantime, roving units of English troops have been plundering Northern France, in retaliation for recent French raids on our mines in Southern England.

A raid on Calais has destroyed the Fortress there. Henrik, that seems to have cost you 2 Boarding Parties - is that right? No longer trusting to fixed fortifications, the High Command has packed Calais with Marines and Grenadiers instead!

A relatively quiet year, as both sides summon their strength for the final test!

Tired of ads?

Does anyone know what the b***** hell these PayPopUps are all about? They are getting seriously annoying!

To whom should I complain, do you think?

Or have I picked up some nasty Trojan? I doubt it, because it only happens at Poly, and my firewall is happy nothing strange is going on. The windows are almost empty when maximised...

Oh, and while I'm in rant mode, can I have my non-Santa smilies back, please?

Put an end to popups!

John

I believe the answer is "Capitolism" amd the person to complain to is Adam Smith. I really love these Xmass smileys, very festive!

Steve,

If you mean "Capitalism", OK, I'm generally in favour (watered down a lot of course - I am a EuroCom after all!) Hee, hee.

But these windows are empty! Who earns a buck there? I just get annoyed, and maybe even abandon Poly after a while. Honestly, I would rather pay a sub to the site than have my bandwidth and eyeball-time stolen like that. Are you listening, mods?

It is not only dam*** rude, it is not even effective!

Of course, if you do mean "Capitolism", as in the Capitol building, then it's another stick I can beat Dubya with....

(And these popups appear in a new window, everytime I post. I have 6 of the blighters on my screen now. They sell themselves as only popping up once per site visit. Fraudsters is what they are. I shall start my distributed DoS attack tomorrow, once I have all my bots programmed... )

Just kidding, Mr Web Policeman, honest....

Actually if you tell markos you're a european you'll get rid of the popups (atleast if you are in the default style).

I'm not sure why, but popups in the default mode are only intended for americans (when they where first added I posted in the thread about not being a yank and since I didn't get popups).
I still got banners though which is why I know use the banner free popup heavy style with a certain little option toggled in mozilla

A few raids carried out in the imidiate vincinity of Paris, lots of Chiens Anglais killed off

Other than that the defenders of Paris still await the eventual storming attempt...

As for the french colonial empire, things are pretty much static around the globe...

Thanks for the tip Henrik. I shall try it out.

What damage did you do to my seige army?

Talking of which, the bombardment was finally opened on Paris this year. The main City Fortification system was immediately destroyed by our expert gunners, after a huge expenditure of ammunition (hit points). More guns were brought into play, and many French casualties caused. However, the first storming of the breaches was ill-prepared, and several brave English regiments were decimated in the first wave - all to no avail.

General Wolfe ordered the attack to be called off, to prevent futile waste of life. More guns were ordered up, and the factories of England are churning out heavy siege mortars and their shells at a fantastic rate.

Paris will have to be reduced by attrition, it seems.

However, to give the Infantry employment, and to reduce the inconvenience suffered from raiding units in southern England and the port of Calais, Le Havre has been taken by a joint land and seabourne assault - and a large nest of Privateers wiped out.

All of our forces, except for one unlucky regiment, returned to the siege lines unharmed.

The French will be made to pay for their depredations, and their over-concentration in the defence of Paris.

A fresh Division has been brought up to defend Calais, and the fortress there has been rebuilt. We are very much aware of the Spanish threats to attack us soon, and even though we now have 2 ports on the continent, all precautions are being taken.

A stray French Merchantman has been captured off Holland by the Dover squadron. What was it doing there, we wonder....? Captain drunk again, we assume!

In the New World, a massive Privateer raid on Rupert's House has finally led to its capture. The French Grenadier regiment there fought well, and hundreds of sailors were killed. However, the place was finally taken (good job I has lots to spare!) and the cutting off of their supplies led to the subsequent surrender of the French Brigade advancing on New Brunswick. The settlement has been renamed Fort George, in honour of our Gracious Sovereign.

This is fun! Looks like I might never take Paris, but this has certainly shaken things up. Haven't seen the turns move this quickly for a long time. Something to do with bananas, I think it was...

Over to you chaps....

It's strange, we're having the same problem at the Gigamap 2194 v0.6 playtests and it has nothing to do with MP since I get the 'what should we destroy' message in other scenarios' PBEMs. (see what I mean here

Inteligence report considering French offensives... Support Apolyton, buy Civilization 2

No official report from the French this year, however this is what your inteligence agencys has been able to find out:

  • A few minor raids conducted on brittish troops in northern France.
  • Bahamas raided, reciding ship sunk and the surounding stockade has been burnt down.
  • While negotiations are rumoured to have taken place between the Brittish and French, the French are fighting on. It may however be time to discuss further after another year of war...

As for the French merchantman north of Holland, the French government cannot be held responsible if individuals reciding within our country chose to endavour into smuggling
(Though we do get part of the profit from it as smugglers pay taxes like everyone else )

Yeah, Henrik. The mines are always the first pillagable thing, though. Do you actually get the dialog? I never got the choice.

Looks like the French are playing their cards close to their chest. More sensible, but less fun! Yeah, let's have a couple more rounds of war at least. As I started, you can finish. If I haven't taken Paris by 1775, I will probably be ready for a peace.

Further bombardment of Paris has led to a small but steady trickle of casualties amonst the defenders. No major assault was ordered this year.

An exploratory raid on Cherbourg showed the defences there have been put in good order, so while specialist fortress-storming troops are recruited and trained, our Generals have been casting around for where next to attack. The French cannot be strong everywhere!

Their very next raid showed that the city of Reims was lightly defended. A few old men and boys sheltering behind the old city walls put up a brave fight, but were soon overcome. Outriding Dragoons have also killed many French farmers near Dijon, in continuing reprisals for the French raids on southern England of '69 and '70. More mines were exploded and filled in with earth outside Cherbourg.

In fact, the old English tactic of chevauchee is coming back into vogue. If the French will not come out from behind their fortifications, we shall lay waste to their town infrastructure and countryside until they give us satisfaction for our many colonies stolen in the Great Banana Wars...

Already their coffers are bare, as they strip their economy to finance more troops.

In the New World, a raid on Labrador has been unsuccessful, and we anticipate little offensive action in this theatre for some while.
