1. Hal Ashby-directed features.
2. Peter Sellers' last fine effort before he made a couple of outright stinkers and died.
3. A novel written by Jerzy Kosinski in 1971.
4. Films directed by and starring the now deceased.

I certainly have to vote for Sellers, as it was a superlative effort...a beautiful touch he had in that one. And I can see Hydey, when asked to help clear the dishes, utter with great conviction "I like to watch".

Kosinski was a hack, for the most part. Though being unpublished I ought not to critique...but he just reeks of touchy feeley boomer angst...kind of like a poor man's Richard Bach (who is sweet to the point of illness as well).

Can't say anything informed about Ashby--what else has he done?

As for #4...that's much too wide a field for one of my tender years. Best left to the antiquarians in the group.

He didn't direct a whole lot given the timespan of his career. His best-known stuff would be Harold and Maude - a wonderful black comedy; The Last Detail - a great character study of 2 Marine Military Police (one of them Jack Nicholson) taking a third Marine cross-country to military jail; Shampoo - Warren Beatty playing an over-sexed hairdresser in what is largely a quite witty political satire; and, of course, Being There. He had some fairly major coke problems along the way, along with some pretty massive insecurities and a preference for the cinematic off-beat. Not a hugely sensible combination. Died in the late 1980s.

Harold and Maude and The Last Detail (in particular) are well worth seeing.

I've seen Harold and Maude and loved it...The Last Detail I've only seen bits of. Beatty is sort of an annoyance to me. Too bad Ashby didn't have his act together...he did some good films, there.

Sneak - for a fascinating, even enthralling analysis of Hollywood in the 1970s - including Hal Ashby's career - you should read Easy Riders, Raging Bulls by Peter Biskind. Highly, highly recommended.
