Assumong that your MB only supports ATA 66 not ATA 100 you can just swap the two cables. (ATA 100 requires a 80 conductor cable and ATA 66 need only a 40 conductor cable).

PS

If ATA 66 needs the 80 conductor cable I am postive that some Canaidian guy will eat my lunch.

Don't worry about swaping cables, you can't hurt anything it just will not work if you don't get it right.

Promethus, I dont know anything about AT66 and ATA 100

I dont know what my motherboard has.

Will definitely open up the case and see what kind of motherboard I have, since I realize that this is critical.

WHEN I GET SOME SLEEEEP

anyway, thanks again, will talk later.

You guys have contradicting info about what I should have on its own IDE cable though.

BTW I entered the BIOS of my PC and it said

IDE UMDA (or something)

and

IDE PIO

I saw that the HD and the CD-ROM are on the IDE UMDA (or something - both in different IDE slots of course)

could the 3rd IDE slot be the IDE PIO (what is that? can I hook up my burner on that?)

UDMA is ultra DMA. That is the faster version.

Just connect both the CD-ROM and CD-R on the same cable and stick it in one of the UDMA slots.

Put the HDD with the other one.

Of course, this is not good if you need to do a lot of CD copying. In which case separate the CD-ROM and CD-R.

You mean 8, as older SCSI can support 7, but one is taken up by the controller.

Try 2themax 4GA+

Full PM-box? Change here!

Ok I got the godamn IDE cable with the split.

I asked if I could just switch the cables I already had and they told me better not to because HD speed might suffer.

ANyway, I'll connect it when I get home.

BTW when I asked for the IDE cable they asked me if I wanted it for CD-Roms or for HDs. I told them CD-ROMs and they gave me one that is not as fast as the other but they said that's enough for CD-Roms.

I'll connect the CDROM with the BURNER making the BURNER master.

I'll leave the HD alone.

BTW the techs were as contradictory about this as you guys

I wont be doing lots of CD copying but lyts of MP3 burning so i guess thats the way to do.

again thanks for your help

I'll report when the deed is done

You should realise this is a normal thing among geeks

Do realise that it is not the cables that affect transfer speed but it is the IDE slots. EIDE (or UDMA) runs faster while using wider cables. PIO is slower.

That's not what the guy from whom I bought the cable told me.

He said I needed different cables if I used them for HDs and different if I used them for CDROMS

Nah, trust us.

I suspect your CD-R runs on EIDE so the narrower cable won't work. Just a hunch, though.

Tired of ads?

P22

The cables are the same for IDE and EIDE. The EIDE standard is what allows you to have 4 devices. IDE only allows 2 devices.

There are two cable types 40 conductor for ATA 33 and 80 conductor dor ATA 66 and above.

If you are using the White connector on the MB this is the correct cable as this is the ATA 33 connector. If you are using the Blue connoctor this cable will still word but you will not be able to use the higher speed of ATA 66 and above. This would only matter if your CDROM AND CD Burner are ATA 66 or faster (remember the speed is deturmined by the SLOWEST device on the cable).

Got spare money?

I will definitely check the color of the connector Promethus.

I hope it will turn out to be white.

Is it white for the secondary IDE

and Blue for the Primary IDE?

(the HD should logically be on the Primary IDE and the CDROM on the Secondary IDE as it is now)

P22 yes Blue is Primary IDE and this where your HD will be.
The cable you have should work just fine.

If you get the 80 conductor cable that will work also even if your secondary IDE is only ATA 33. However this cable costs more that the one you just got, on the other hand with the 80 conductor cable there NO possibabilty of error.

Promethus, how can I know for sure if my Secondary IDE is ATA 33?

Is it the color? If it is white it is ATA 33? (or maybe white only means secondary IDE)

Is there any other way to know?

(I dont have the book of the motherboard - it is approx 3 years old).

Again thanks for your help

Of you get the MB Name and Number you can find the manual online. In any case a three to four year MB likely only has one ATA 66 or higher conector. The color codeing of the connectors startrf about the time your MB was made. Before that both connectors were white no matter there speed.

Like I said you can't go wrong with the 80 conductor cable, you will just be paying more mony for something you don't need.

But your peace of mind may be worth the extra money.

Ok Promethus Thanks.

Permit me to say, again, GODAMN!, since the stores are closed now so I'll have to wait untill tomorrow AGAIN if this the case.

I'll take off the name and model of the MB tonight though, and check this out.

I'm pretty sure the guy gave me an ATA 33 cable.

It just costed only 3 euros, how more cheap could it get?
