red4ever, yeah that helped thanks!
But I need a clarification:
as I said there is a socket in the MB which, logically, should be used to plug in the IDE cable and then plug the other end in the CDR.
HOWEVER, there is ALSO a socket in the middle of the IDE cable which connects the MB with the HD.
U sure I plug the IDE cable to the MB and NOT to the socket which is in the middle of the MB-HD IDE cable?
The reason I ask this is that in the ****ing instructions there is a picture of a IDE cable with 2 connections.
Again thanks for helping me and for your courage to go through my labyrinthe of "explanations".
edit: and BTW how many pennies for the IDE are we talking about exactly? (give or take?)

Your Hd is in the primary your cdrom will go in the secondary.
If you have only one cdrom and one hd put them into different IDE slots. IE: HD in primary cdrom in secondary
quote: The thing is:
The IDE cable that connects the MB to the HD has a SOCKET in the middle of it! |
Sounds like you have only one cdrom
quote: Should I just go ahead and discard that socket and use the free socket in the MB instead? |
Do you have two IDE cables? If so yes use both cables plug the cdrom into the secondary Ide slot on your motherboard. (the free one) As red said look at the back of your cdrom you will see a small jumper. Make sure the jumper is on MASTER or CS that is usualy the factory setting. If you put the cdrom on it's own cable.
/edit: If you notice the IDE cables and the slots will have notches make sure you line them up right. If no notches the red side goes into number 1.

KA31 - Slot 1 Motherboard, microATX, FSB 86~150 MHz, UDMA/66, AGP 4x, for Pentium III 450-733+ Pentium II 233-450 Celeron 266-433MHz Celeron PPGA 300-533+, VIA Apollo Pro 133A, 3 DIMM 768MB max SDRAM ECC support, 4 IDE, UDMA/66, 1 AGP 3 PCI 1 ISA
Several mbs have them yes.
Ok then you need to take the IDE cable off the cdrom you have installed already. Put that into the burner.
Then hook the old cdrom up to the middle cable of the IDE going to you hd. Make sure you change the jumper on the back of the old cdrom to slave. It is really not nessary to use the middle IDE plug on the cable but it if reaches do it. If not unplug the IDE from the HD and put the end into the burner and the middle into the HD. Sometimes it does matter on old MB's so try the middle one first.
Thats it for now we will see if your computer recognizes it at reboot

That looks very much like my MB, yes. Sorry for not being able to be more specific. I appreciate your help.
Red and Blackice, so JUST IN CASE, there are no 3 IDE slots (although I am sure I have seen one free and I think it was an IDE slot)
The HD will be made: master
the CD - ROM will be made :slave
and the Burner what? master or slave?
