I'm amazed you seriously think it'll aid your kids to put them in an all-boys school.

Seriously though, I don't buy the excuse it "keeps their mind off of sex" like Horsie said. Nothing will keep their minds off of sex in high school, save for castration. Going to an all boys school will only restrict access to sex for most of the time, with a heterosexual partner. Like in a prison, I'm sure the rate of homosexual behavior is going to be higher in an all boys school than a co-ed school.

I should hope you don't overprotect your kids, Horse. The real world has women, why shouldn't school?

Of course it doesn't keep minds of sex. Last year the class of 2002 watched a porno during a theology class because the teacher was absent and the sub didn't check her box to know she was subbing. It was especially funny because it was on a gianormous projector thing.

And the rate of homosexual behavior is not higher. I've got only two gay guys in my class (they aren't friends by the way). Only one of them has ever gotten any and that was about six years ago.

I'm just saying there is no reason not to do that stuff because there are no girls around to offend.

I had a few friends in college who went to all-boys/all-girls schools, and they all loved it there and came out fairly well-adjusted. It didn't seem to turn them homosexual, and they seemed to relate to members of the opposite sex a whole lot better than a lot of people I knew.

The single-gender schools these people went to didn't completely separate them from the opposite sex, since they still had contact when school was out. All it did was take out most of the bullshit that is an integral part of everybody's raging hormones during adolescense--they didn't act like morons in order to get into somebody's pants, because there was nobody around to impress.

more exposure to girls will make them more sensitive...and what if they are better friends with girls than guys? I know I am...

Girls can just make better friends than guys. Most guys don't care to be very sensitive so most friendships just stay pretty shallow.

Hmm, if they are insecure nerds is it probably a good idea. Otherwise not.

(and I'm actually not sarcastic for once...)

I agree with Asher, it might mess up their view of girls and sexuality. (Not meaning they'd go gay, just messed up. Objectification of women, comittment issues etc). Of course, if they are insecure nerds they carry some of this already, and exposure to sometimes incredibly cruel high school girls might just make it worse. Your call, Horsie.

Being thrown in with girls while the girls are confused by their hormones may also mess up their view of girls and sexuality.

Unless the lads are having trouble with girls banging on the door at all hours then same sex schools probably aren't a good idea. Are they a bad idea? That's the gamble I guess.

On balance it probably won't effect them to much one way or the other, but, the real world does have girls in it and the sooner they get comfortable interacting in a mixed gender enviroment the better they will do in business, social interactions, dating and what not. I can't see a down side to sending them but I certainly can see an upside to not sending them.

That isn't true actually. For boys who go to these schools there are many occupations where they recreate the all boy environment, the "went to the same school" environment - banking, law, the stock market. Its a cradle to the grave thing

Well, your kids hopefully won't learn to deal with sexuality in your own home...

High school and college is when most people learn to deal with the opposite sex. This goes beyond just sex-ed, it is about how you work with someone you find sexually attractive without letting it be a problem, that women are jsut as intelligent and capable as men are, while men can actually be good friends, listeners, comforters...

From an observers perspective at Notre Dame, a school that while only 75% male desperately wishes it was back in the good old days when it was PC to be all-male, I think the guys coming out of that school are messed up. they have some weird gender view where it is 'them vs us', drilled into them by the relentless rules of the university that emphasises the difference between the genders and discourages mingling...

Definitely!
'Tis the best form of education, and got one where one is today. Actually, that is not the best example... But there are many other good examples.
As for it producing or encouraging homosexuality, it tends to do the opposite in my view.

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

I feel that they miss out on important skills, such as how to deal with and relate to females, by being in an all-boy school. Friends I know that went to an all-boy highschool are hopeless around females now, they can't talk to them on more than a superficial level, if at all. Friends who went to a co-ed highschool are... less hopeless around females.

Of course, in the interests of the gene-pool, I would recommend that Horsey send his boys to an all-boy school.

Aidan is keen to go because some of his friends are going.

That will keep their little minds off sex and on their studies! Good idea don't you think?

(btw, does anyone know what happened to my behave yourselves thread last night?)

Horsie, if I had kids I would never send them to an all boy school (or an all girl school), from what I´ve heard gender separated schools can really **** you up. Look at some english politicians.

And you don´t really belive that they will stop thinking about sex just because there are no girls around, do you?

No, not necessarily, but once you throw into the mix an all-male school so the only time they see girls is when they're at the mall or talking to their mom, they might get a bit weird on you.

You should be teaching your kids the notion of gender equality, and by sending them to a segregated school you're not exactly sending that message.
