New York pizza is the best in the world, I feel so lucky to be in this city!

Pizza is American, just like the hamburger.

It's like the Chinese and pasta.

Sure, they invented it, but the Italians took it and made it a world-wide food associated with their culture.

Same thing with pizza. The Italians may have invented it (though the Greeks should get partial credit, too), but America took pizza, popularized it and gave it to the rest of the world. It's an American institution.

Uh no, the Italians took pasta and made it good to fit their standards.

The americans on the other hand took pizza and ruined it. It is purely an italian institution and never belonged to the Americans.

And that's different from what I said how?

It is indisputable that pasta was brought to Europe from China by the Italians. They popularized it in the Western world.

Pizza as it is known to most of the world (outside of Italy) isn't the Italian creation, it's the American incarnation.

Anyway, considering your tastes in all other matters, I'm gonna just have to disregard your opinion on what makes good pizza and what doesn't.

It isn't. I was just adding a small point.

No it is not. American pizza = garbage. Sorry but that is the way it is.

Or who makes good pizza. Italians make good pizza, Americans on the other hand... I am sorry but Americans should stick to hamburgers.

Then why did you start the sentence with "Uh no?"

quote:

No it is not. American pizza = garbage. Sorry but that is the way it is.

That's your opinion, which you're entitled to, but the fact that American pizza is what became popularized throughout the world is indisputable. That has nothing to do with the quality of the pizza, just the historical fact of how it was spread.

Hmm, I dunno about that...at least in Western nations, noodles are associated most often with spaghetti and other Italian dishes.

Pizza was spread from Italy and made popular from there. People often assoicate pizza with Italy, not America.

Fez: Pizza was confined to Italy (mostly the peasantry) and certain ethnically Italian neighborhoods in American cities until World War 2. After the war, returning G.I.s who had eaten it in Italy wanted to have it in the U.S., and that led to the rise of pizza as an American institution. It became quite popular and you saw the rise of pizzarias all over cities and national pizza chains.

It was after that when pizza spread, in its American form, back to other European countries like France, Britain and Germany, as well as to other regions of the world.

Only recently has true "neopolitan" pizza, which is essentially what NY pizza is, been becoming common in areas outside Italy. Up until a few years ago, such pizza would be confined to "gourmet" Italian restaurants only.

I looked it up as well. Different source. Besides I can taste the smoking.

Then again it could be the variety I buy.

And there was me thinking Marco Polo brought it back from China, in noodle form.

Seriously though, I thought it was the arabs who brought it to places like Malta and Sicily.

Pizza is American, Fez... and Chicago style is the best!

The worst would be pizza from St. Louis. They put pineapples, cheddar cheese and all sorts of weird shyt on their pizza there. Personally, I prefer cheese, sausage, or occasionally pepperoni. Every once in a while I'll make a hamburger pizza (ground beef and onions), and a mexican pizza (beef, refried beans, tomatoes, peppers, cheddar, jack, pablano, and chihuahua cheeses).

Fez, there are a LOT of Italian-Americans.

However I used work next to a place that better pizza than those crappy chains like Numero Uno. It was a Korean shop. Not great pizza but better than chain pizza.

Of course New Yorkers have this idea that only New York has good pizza. Some think its the water. How that would that be better in the concrete jungle of New York than in, say LA, where much of the water is from the Sierra Nevadas is another question.

I do know of one possible cause that might actualy effect the quality though. A lot of New York pizza shops apparently use coal fired ovens. You can't even get coal in California. I have seen lump of anthracite in my life and it was part of my rock collection. If you could get it you wouldn't be allowed to burn in Southern California anyway. Even the barbeque shops have forced to get scrubbers for the smoke.

There are millions of us.

Ethelred, the difference in regions has to do more with the style than anything else. Outside of Chicago and NYC, pizza tends to be rather bready or uses inferior cheese. It is possible to find decent pizza if you hunt. In this backwater little town in Northern Wisconsin I found a pretty good pie once. Here in Florida though, it all pretty much is vile.

In the big cities, you're more likley to find slate or brick ovens, which are really what you need to make a quality pie.
