Writers seem to get treated like "people we don't talk about" in the film industry. I suppose the same goes for camera people and most of the others that actually make the product. Maybe because it destroys the "magic". |
It's historical, dating back to the earliest days of the Hollywood studio system. The writers were, literally, employees. They went to work in their office at the studio. Their work was frequently re-written by the writers in the next office. Directors, while also employees, had a higher profile, literally, because there they were on the set. And, once a film is in production, the director's clout increases - he or she has established a tone and style, he or she can threaten to walk at any time, et al. Thus the directors have a profile and clout. Some writers do these days, but there aren't many.
