the United States of Europe Support Apolyton buy from Amazon

Some results of the European convention in Brussels :

A group of politicians, led by Giscard d'Estaing, is working on a proposal for a European constitution.
When this constitution is accepted, they also propose to rename the EU to USE (United States of Europe).

Now who will be THE united states then.

A European constitution would actually be nice.
Make it a real union, not just some economical pact.

I think that they are being premature in the extreme.

At this point in time, with all the many divisions inside the EU, least of all being Britain's obstinancy with the euro, it seems like a rather Quixotic maneuver…

we have a Europe of two speeds, that's for sure.

But this is a good year for Europe. Finalization of entry talks for a number of nations. Reform of the financial system in the EU. And the constitution.

The US doesn't have the entire continent together either. And didnt'they start with a mere 13 states? and they weren't united either, other than in their oposition agains the British. Then later, some states abandoned slavery, and others didn't. America of two speeds.

That will be the next step, when European states cannot control their budget.

By the way, I wonder who would become president of the USE ?

Maybe they should invite Clinton.

The problem is though, the USA didn't start out with such tremendously jarring cultures. True, the north was far more conservative than the south in the beginning - but we were both English in origin, whereas you have the formidable task of making a nation that has both Finnish people, Greek people, and Spanish people make sense, let alone form a cohesive unit.

Well, there were religious differences, which was important to people at the time.

Got spare money?

Different protestant religions, big deal. In the very beginning of the U.S.A. (not the colonies) this wasn't even that big of a deal anymore - by the late 1700s the puritans had mellowed out considerably into the congregational church. Plus the European Union gets to deal with not only one, but two schisms - they've got orthodox, catholic, and protestant.

"Different protestant religions, big deal."

There were lots of catholics in the early States. About 1/2 the pop of Maryland and Pennsylvania, IIRC.

Edit: No, my numbers aren't quite right. Catholicism represented only roughly 2% of the population at the founding.
