Welcome to the Schola of Diplomacy!
Here at the Schola of Diplomacy we are proud contributurs to the foreign affairs of the Gathering Storm. Established November 13, 2002, our mission is to represent the government and community of the Gathering Storm to those nations who are foreign to us, who's ways are not of our own and whose culture is strange to us. In doing so, we also shall also enforce the will of the government upon other regions as is our Manifest Destiny.......

What is the timetable for determining the minister?
I suppose we will have to wait till all have signed up to their respective schools.
Will we rotate the position?
What will be the first order of business after the selection?
We have already been working on the barbarian issue, which looks like we will fail, but they don't know that we are trying to manipulate things.
Have the other teams anounced a foreign minister yet?
How will this work, we will discuss strategies, and then the minister will deal one on one with the other groups ministers?
and of course, can delegate issues to individuals, in order to maximize our effectiveness.

Good answer asleepatthewheel.
quote: Will we rotate the position? |
Yes, I believe that is necessary so all 'students' get the proper time in the field and have an opportunity to advance. How often do we rotate is another question, and I hope it is one that can be decided either here or in another thread. There could be a law that sets the maximum amount of terms a person can serve as Chief of their Schola, although depending on how long those terms last makes a difference in that too. The option to serve more than 2 or 3 terms (which is just a hypothetical term limit for this) can be voted as an amendment if majority of the members in that schola agree to expand term limit.
quote: What will be the first order of business after the selection?
|
That should be up to whoever has been elected to Chief of their Schola. I suspect that BEFORE a member is sworn in as Chief that they have already laid out their agenda, spoken on the important issues, come to conclusions, and basically decided what stance to take diplomatically.
At that point the first order of business is up to the Chief and I'm sure that each Chief will operate in somewhat the same manner, but will have different specific issues to address each term.
quote: We have already been working on the barbarian issue, which looks like we will fail, but they don't know that we are trying to manipulate things. |
Indeed it was no huge success, but we must devise ways of subtle coersion and prepare for the moments when we must take a strong diplomatic stance regardless. I hope that such practice 'manuevers' will also be done in the future to test both how deep our influence can be felt (and that ratio will drop and rise depending on foreign pressure).
However, we must consistently find ways of imposing our will with words.
quote: Have the other teams anounced a foreign minister yet? |
Not that I have seen, but I plan on drafting an intelligence dossier for diplomatic use in the Diplomacy Schola threads for future reference.
quote: How will this work, we will discuss strategies, and then the minister will deal one on one with the other groups ministers?

yes all of the above said. There must be communication on all fronts, between all schools. We will learn to work as a team eventually. At first we can expect it to be a little rough, but eventually we will act and react as one nation comprised of members with certain specialties should.
Strategy talk would involve questions regarding possible scenerio's that we may be involved in someday, also there will be much brainstorming done on both the part of the Chief and the students who voted him into power, hopefully devising new ways to enforce our will on the planet.
Things will come together very well when we begin playing. We will see our system begin to work and it will be very functional.

Heed my words fellow scholars- I have an issue to raise:
This issue is still being discussed in the "whole lot of bouncing going on" thread, but since it seems like a pure "Diplomatic" issue, it must be discussed here as well.
As you all know, we play with and against our fellow Apolytonians in this upcoming PTW-DG, and in the nature of this kind of game- subterfuge, betrayls and other opportunistic actions will take place- player against player, human against AI, and human against human. We are talking about memebers of our own community, they are our buddies, and no hard feelings should be invovled. Therefore, i suggest we act towards having a combined statement "signed" and agreed upon by all teams, that no personal or any non-game intentions are to be attached to these kind of acts, so that this game won't turn into an ugly slander and flaming mud fighting. I don't expect this to happen, but i think some mutual undestanding between the teams regarding this issue should be achieved.
What do you think?

I agree
Its self evident, but it probably should be said.
And it is good to start off the game with an agreement, however small or token.

So in the end, we will most likely be working with ALL of these guys in one way or another on the same team, so it would probably be wise to post this 'trash-talk notice'....
|
Indeed, i thought of it as a way to help us play sportively so that no one takes it personaly when he gets satabbed in the back, in the game that is...
Also i wanted to emphasize that its not a notice by our team or any other for that matter, but a combined unoffical "agreement".
Now we need someone to make a coherent compilation of these principals, i'd love to try, but english is not my native language, so i find it problematic for me to compile a diplomatic agreement.
The basic principles i think of are:
1)No trash talking, bashing, flaming against members of other teams
2)Play sportively- don't post that your team betrayed that team just because you all agreed that it's leader's breath is real bad, that's totaly out of the spirit of the game
3)Don't accuse other members of playing against you just because they hold a personal grudge against you- that'll just spoil the fun and turn this wonderful playing experience into a bitter bickering.

While I agree in principle on this agreement, I disagree with the first point.
I think trash talking should be in the game, talking smack makes the game fun. don't you want to rub it in an enemy's face when we take their capital?
The problem of course is when this is taken personally, so I would amend that to say trash talking should be kept to reasonable limits and avoid overly personal attacks.

Zeit, asleepatthewheel and Dominae, we're the only Diplomats of our nation. Elections will be coming up soon...so I propose we start discussing here how to handle our foreign affairs....
Sometime in this game we will have to discuss Technology Trading, Resource Trading, Right of Passage Treaties, War Alliances, Mutual Protection Pacts, and Trade Embargo's.
Not to mention that it is encouraged for all members of the Diplomatic Schola to pursue intelligence information on the other teams, no matter what issue trivial or large, and post it here.
Once the game starts, the Chief of this Schola should also be encouraged to post screenshots for review.
There is much much more to discuss...
How we deal with Legoland.
How we deal with Lux Invictica
How we deal with RolePlayTeam
How we deal with Glory of War
How we deal with AI civilizations

Hmm... I've not made my choices clear in the other thread, but I'll certainly like to enter the diplo school as well... it's just I'm hesitating on the other choice...
As to what I'd like to do: pure intelligence is not exactly my style, but I would like to analyse what the others are up to, kind of indirect intelligence.
Oh, and let me answer one of your question directly: How to deal with the AIs? Simple... they may exist as long as they can provide techs to us, either by trade (never trading a tech of ours away! only gold), or by extortion. Other then that, they are basically just open territory that has already some infrastructure in it. AIs won't be around for long anyway, as this is only Monarch, before 500 BC all AIs will be gone, either by us, or by the other humans.

We will also need to figure out how to deal with that new team, the Cutthroats, if it ever comes into existence (which I doubt) or whatever team flash9286 joins, as I trust them less than the others. I think all the other teams can be manipulated to ally against a third, but I imagine they will be enemies for life. In other words, I think we need to eliminate them ASAP if we share an island or continent.
My concern is that due to the perception of the new members, all other teams will ally against us. Granted, this will make our victory much sweeter, but perhaps unneccessarily difficult. We must foster a relationship with either Legoland or Roleplayers. I view them as potentially solid allies, and not teams that we have overly irritated, yet.
thoughts?

Im sure the rest of the teams are operating much in the same way, at this point we are still all equal in strength and power, regardless of how many members there are. That said, we should not be worried about alliances against us yet. Until we know our location in the world better, then it's still somewhat of a non-issue. But what we say and do still affects the way we're viewed up to and through our opening moves.

I agree wholeheartedly. Legoland and the Roleplayers all seem to be the most 'honorable' of our four opponents. The Legolanders still seem to be a little apprehensive. I'm sure they are very worried about starting next to the Glory of War or Lux Invictica. Through that fear we can appear to them as a beacon of light, one that may help them if they help. Like the mercenary idea that we were all tossing around, if they pay tribute to us then we will offer our protection. They don't even necessarily have to pay tribute, they can simply just acknowledge our statehood and stay out of our way, too. It's up to us how the relationship with them will be formed.
The Roleplayers are the wild card, as has been mentioned before. They say that they will face internal struggles for power all the time, but that could also simply be them trying to diminish their own power so we underestimate them ('we' as in the rest of the teams). I sense that they are going to be very tricky, although I'm sure they may keep their word for as long as the situation allows. Togas is honorable and will treat us with respect should we treat him the same, I don't foresee any sneak attacks from the Roleplayers.
One more thought : Nobody has really pointed out that the Glory of War and Lux Invictica may not end up as allies, they may indeed go to war against each other, and my what a slugfest that will be! Should they go to war with each other that would shift the odds in our favor, especially if neither side wins or loses, if the Front remains stagnant and neither lose, but just keep throwing units at each other and wasting away their industry.

Should we hold a poll that EVERYONE can vote in, but list only the names of the Diplomats to elect chief diplomacist? That would mean a poll with my name, asleepatthewheel's, Zeits and Dominae's name..... up to you guys. |
I will not be in the election. My next month is going to be fairly fluid and I can't give the job what is necessary. I will follow my liege, at least for the first term, then, Oh wait, you can breathe easy, Mesh, we aren't the roleplayers, no asassinations
I think we should just choose between the five of us (don't forget DeepO ) that way it can be determined now and the cheif and second can get to work. While it would be nice to hear other's opinions, at this point, we really don't know which of us is most abely suited to the position. Perhaps the next term should be open to all to vote, but I think the first term we should choose.
What do you think?

Nah, seriously guys, I'm willing to help as much as I can, but I think I won't be finding time enough to run for minister. You can savely scratch my name from the list (for now at least, perhaps later I will change my mind)
As to the other teams: I think that we can expect some surprise here, but a lot will depend on where everyone starts. If 2 human teams start on a rather isolated landmass, it is extremely hard to ally with the other one, as competition for space is simply too harsh. If, however, we start on a larger continent with a couple of guys, things will be a lot different. I think we are in a relatively good position to ally someone, as most of us are considered honorable, or at least not infamous, whereas the GoW is feared by all because of their war-objectives. If Lux allies with them, it will only be because Trip wants to teach us a lesson, I don't foresee them allying against e.g. the legos.
RP seems a good choice, but they are not the most stable team it seems when it comes to holding a government, and this should certainly be considered. Legoland will most likely be good, but if we ally with them it wil be an assymetric alliance: we fight the wars, they provide the techs. As builders, their focus will be on defense anyway, even if I can't believe they will try to keep their hands clean when dealing with AIs (at least not when they want to expand rapidly).
BTW: AI trade: never maps, and only techs that we can imagine other humans have as well. Plus, if we can keep one of them isolated (e.g. on an island when only we have the lighthouse and can access them) the may live a bit longer
Further a question: do you guys think that the diplo guys from the other teams are talking to each other already? Maybe we need to start establishing contacts early, without of course showing any intent. Just a simple 'Hello, I'm Joe, how are you today?' could mean that if they ever have to choose they will look at us with a smile instead of a grin.

Makes perfect sense to me. It always seems to take that initial term for the government to really get going and for minister's to prove (or disprove) themselves.
It is true that at this time there is no possible way we can know what each other's talents are, other than what they say. The test of that will be coming soon.
But the Schola's are designed also so that in most ways all the members TOO are accountable for their decisions.
If the Chief of Tactical schola fails a mission, then generally under a different government everyone would assume that since it's his fault he followed faulty advice then he shouldn't be the leader anymore....or etc.
But in the case of this team and the Schola base we've set, it would seem that the whole Schola suffers, since they share equal power amongst themselves and submit suggestions and ideas to the leader amongst them.
I think this contributes to less 'character assassination' type issues (if a minister's decision isn't the best), and it also provides a steep learning curve for all involved, since they must learn to work as a group and take their losses together, rather than heap the blame on one person...
thoughts? Any of that make sense?
