30,000 Turk Cypriots Hold Pro-EU Rally Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

NICOSIA, Cyprus - Waving flags and olive branches, some 30,000 Turkish Cypriots marched through the capital Thursday to support reunification of divided Cyprus — a requirement for their joining the European Union (news - web sites).

AP Photo

The demonstration, the largest pro-EU rally held in the northern Turkish part of Cyprus, comes after Turkish and Greek Cypriots failed to iron out their differences at the European Union summit in Copenhagen earlier this month.

"Peace in Cyprus cannot be prevented," chanted the crowd, which gathered at a main square in the Turkish sector of divided Nicosia before dispersing peacefully.

The demonstrators were demanding the resignation of Rauf Denktash, the leader of the breakaway Turkish Cypriot Republic, whom they accuse of blocking an agreement with Greek Cypriots.

"Feb. 28 is our last chance and Denktash is not negotiating," said Mehmet Ali Talat, leader of the opposition Republican Turk Party.

At the Copenhagen summit, the European Union invited Cyprus to join the economic bloc by 2004 and asked both sides to find a solution by Feb. 28. If no agreement is reached by that date, only the Greek part of the island would enter the EU.

Cyprus-born Turkish Cypriots number 80,000. The total population in Turkish-held northern Cyprus is around 200,000, with the rest settlers from Turkey.

Five Turkish Cypriots on Thursday entered a third day of a hunger strike to push for the reunification of the island.

The Turkish side is especially concerned about the return of land to Greek Cypriots envisaged in a United Nations (news - web sites)-drafted plan. The plan seeks to unify the divided island into a single country consisting of two component states.

Cyprus has been split into a Greek Cypriot south and a Turkish Cypriot north since Turkey invaded in 1974 after a short-lived coup by supporters of union with Greece. The self-declared breakaway Turkish Cypriot administration is only recognized by Turkey, which maintains some 35,000 troops there.

Heavy are the chains of their dictatorship.

Peace Baris

Some 30,000 Turkish Cypriots take to streets in Turkish part of Nicosia to call for the reunification of the divided Mediterranean island, a requirement for EU membership, Thursday, Dec. 26, 2002. makarios did one mistake.

when he was liberating cyprus from the gays he should have taken into account the turkish cypriotes.

that way the gays could not have turned them against him.

You know, the brits shoved lots of future Israelis to cyprus, as well. IIRC at one point there were more than a hundred thousand jews from the holocaust in cyprus.

We should have taken over that joint.

protests are good but turkey has the tanks on them fearing they will tear the wall that separates the island down...

It's clear that the turks in cyprus were a minority that occupied the north of the island. Bishop macarios, or whatever his name was, led a little junta of people that wanted to Hellenize the island, by all means. I am telling you, a massacre would have happened.

THAT much is clear.

if greeks have wanted they had 1 bazilion chances to wipe out the turks.

the turks invaded WHEN cyprus was to join with greece (which makarios did not want!)

Wasn't the coup illegal? Both Greece and Turkey have been screwin' the cypriotes around. They'd be better off independent and be Cypriotes first, and let the Greeks and Turks fight and bicker somewhere else.

This is equally true. the Greeks and Turks would be perfectly happy with the British if the Turks/Greeks didnt stir them up so as to CLAIM cyprus for themselves.

i agree means:
the coup was illegal (doh!) but greece had a dictatorship back then (which was backed by the US/UK scam)

so youre not talking about a democratic greece wanting the union.

(and i repeat makarios did not want the union, greece sent its own squads there to overthrow him)

BTW "to leave britain" sounds so fake

Cyprus was a colony for christ's sake! not an... EU member! Exploited and utterly poor under british colonial rule.

Cypriotes have been lobbying the Greeks long enough to press the matter of independence in the UN.

And when the attacks against the Brits started, the Brits left, but made a point of stiring up the Turks cypriotes against the Greek cypriotes.

Revengeful little bastards.
BTW Britain was one of the 3 guaranteeing powers. But given all that its no surprise they didnt raise a finger to stop the turks from invading,.

anyway the fault of Makarios was that he didn't take the turkish cypriotes in his "embrace" so to speak and left them pawns in the hands of the brits. (and the turks). as for the mistakes of the juntists... where to begin

Anyway, thats history, "forgiven" but not forgoten.

Today facts are:" Free rich Cyprus enters the EU. Turkish cypriotes want to, but their dictator doesnt let them.

What was he hanged for, murder, treason, terroristism?

Elas was fighting for independent Greece, (or so they said ) against the British in 1945. Maybe the British should have stayed home and Greece could have had a big Stalin statue at the Parthedon in Athens.

Cyprus was NOT a colony. It was handed over to the UK from TURKEY/OTTANMANs in the 1880/1890s. Since then it was undeveloped terrority which paid a small tribute to the empire in exchange for British seapower ending piracy.

Why would the British develop Cyprus? Alien language, population, poor resources. They had 1/4 of the world to pick from, Cyprus would be about least desirable investment.

Blame the British? Neithier Greece or Turkey would even exist if it was'nt for the evil British.

Fighting to have his own parliement in his own country.

That was why a 15 years old cypriote boy was hanged by the British.

What do you say about that?

quote:

Elas was fighting for a lot of things.

It fought against the Nazi Germans and then against the british and the state fascists.

The English opened fire in the crowd and killed scores, precipitating the civil war.

They also, along with the state fascists, sent scores in exile.

Are you ok with that?

Stalin in the Parthenon?

Better read a lot more history....

There COULD have been a compromise between the rebels and the state. The Brits just created a chaos and then left when the sh!t hit the fan since they couldn't handle the rebels anymore.
That's for history.

quote:

Cyprus was under british rule = a colony.

It was dirt poor and exploited. After it fought to gain its independance from the brits, and it got it, it prospered. The Greek-Cypriote part that is.

Are you ok with that?

quote:

Hanging 15 years old migth give them a hard on? Who knows.

Maybe you can answer it?

The Cypriotes had a right to
_Freedom
_Prosperity

and that meant getting the gays off their backs.

quote:
Blame the British? Neithier Greece or Turkey would even exist if it was'nt for the evil British.

Trying to be serious in the face of such "unbiased", "educated" declarations, at least I try to find the mistakes on each side, instead of treating the Brits like angels like you seem to do. And without knowing sh!t about the whole matter as it seems.
