The elections are coming! The elections are coming!

In the 28th of January, the are general elections in Israel. The people in Israel will choose the memebers of the unicameral Israeli parliament, the Knesset, which will number (as always) 120 people. Then, the president will have council with the leaders of the political parties that were elected, and will decide who will form the next government, the de-facto leader of the state of Israel.(Usually the leader of the largest party)

In the latest two weeks, great changes have been seen on the Israel's political map, with a large decay in the popularity of the leading Likud Party due to the sudden ( ) emergence of multiple corruption allegations, which finally gives the labor party a realistic shot at #1, and the emergence of the Shinui party, which is strongly anti-religious, while remaining in the middle on peace and security issues. There is also a bit of a rise in the power of the religious factions.

The standing of the parties in the latest polls is:

Likud: 28 seats.
Labor: 21-22 seats
Shinui: 17 seats
Arab Parties, and communists( the ICP has joined an arab-jewish block which has no social agenda, also include arab nationalists, and muslim religious ) : 8 seats
Shas: ultra-religious 10-11
Meretz: Social democrats, peace oriented 7
The National Union (Far right) 10-11 (worrying rise from 8 )
The Judaism of Torah ultra-religious: 5 seats
Mafdal: Moderate Religious, Zionist : 5 seats
Israel ba Aliya : new immigrants: 4 seats
Am-Ehad: The Trade Union's Party: 3-4 seats

here comes the interesting part. I've got myself a job as a member of a commitee on one of the ballot boxes, from the meretz social democrats . This job is totally non-political, I am not a member of their party, but still...

Anyway, my function seems to be an important part of the functioning of democracy. I'll be setting the booth, sitting and checking ID numbers, and helping to count the votes.AND WILL GET PAID, so it's all very interesting, really.

Meretz? Are you actually considering them? Bleh.

In the beginning I thought about voting for Shinui, but after the Likud started falling I decided that it's more important to have a Likud leadership than a strong Shinui.
This is all hypothetical of course. I will be 18 only a month after the elections.

No, but I want people to know the political parties in Israel.

Ale yarok is not an option, and not only because of security Issues. I am pro-legalization, but they seem to be bunch of stoners. Not only that, but they're too left-wing on security issues for me. Shinui takes a centrist stance, but is anti-religious.

Meretz was a block created that featured MAPAM, state's laborers party, which historically differed from the communists only by supporting the creation of Israel. (probably some split in the far past. They now fashion themselves to be social democrats, after the Labor went the way of it's British counterpart. As it stands now, there is no communist list in Israel, there is Hadash "Democratic Egalitarian Front", but nothing good can really come when jewish communists join arab nationalists ( Ahmed Tibi, Arafat's ex-advisor runs in that list.... )

Eli: no, didn't see that one. I find their list totally disgusting. They're the closest thing to a nationalistic-racist-authoritarian-dictatorship party Israel has got. Liberman is hardly better with statements like "let's bomb the Aswan damb" (yes, I know that's not what he said, but smart it is not))

meretz pay good cash. I'd vote for them if they did actually care about separating religion and state, and wouldn't be so damn loony on the political front. I one of their brochures, and it was ****in' incredible.

It's real funny to read their forums when they're mudslinging Shinui's leader, Joseph Tommy Lapid, and calling him the israeli Archie Bunker(sp?). damn envious, that Shinui hopped over their agenda and grabbed the 3rd spot in the elections.

Well, I support them on most issues except Transfer. And that's not going to happen anyway, even if they get 20 seats because they will sit in a coalition with (relatively) moderate parties.
