(Stupid Question: How do I get me a flag next to the ol' name?)
Canadian politics is in a sad, sad state right now, in my opinion...
The Alliance is filled with (a) rednecks (and I'm from Alberta, so I'm qualified to judge), (b) idiots, and (c) lost Tories.
The Tories themselves are castrated.
The NDP, who ideally I would match up with best, are a bunch of do-nothing whiners who let Svend Robinson get away with unabashedly supporting the Palestinian Authority to a degree that even Dubya would find excessive...
And the Liberals. My god, the Liberals... They truly have an unbreakable hold on federal politics, and I just don't know why... Actually, it's probably just for lack of an alternative. Or who knows, maybe down east people actually LIKE the Liberals for some unfathomable reason...
The gun registration is the most sickening waste of tax dollars I've ever heard of.
Asher: you're right about Alberta oil being at a standstill, but you have to admit that when the Ft. MacMurray, Leduc, and wherever else oil sands dry up, Alberta's gonna be in for a world of economic hurt. Especially what with Ralphie Moneymaker's right-wing tweakings... The Energy prices have skyrocketed under privatization, and health & education are going downhill fast.
It's a bad scene all around.

The Alberta oilsands aren't even close to being dried up (they've extracted less than 1% of known oil, and they're still exploring...), and the Alberta economy has been disversifying quite rapidly over the past 20 years.
We're not there yet, but we'll definitely be there soon.
And you should look at the energy prices, they're back to levels just before privatization. There was a huge spike for a year, but they normalized.
And IIRC, Alberta still tested the highest in math and reading skills in the country.
And several new hospitals are being built, and a ton of new schools, and nurses just got a huge payraise...

You're a more optimistic man than I, Asher.

That's more like it!

Well, I'll admit I'm not that wise when it comes to energy prices, so you win this round!

Damn you and your stats!

But what about the whole "private clinics can perform surgery maybe" thing? Do you buy the whole "Once you open the doors..." argument?
Ooo, and here's something else I can complain about, schoolwise: Why, oh why, do we still allow that relic of colonial Quebec, public funding to Catholic schools, to survive? Why don't Hindi community schools/learning centres get the same treatment? (Now, I'm quite sure you're about to correct me on this, too, so let me prepare myself... ok, shoot. )
