The difference between American, politics where you can choose between the equivalent of Hitler or Stalin, from Canadian politics is that in Canada you not only get the choice of Hitler and Stalin but also Pol Pot and Pinochet. Democracy at its best!

They're way down in the poll numbers. Very similar to Mulroney. He walked on water for 2-3 elections, then growing backlash swept up. He resigned so he wouldn't have to face what the next election's going to bring.

Who's to say what will happen after their leadership convention though. There's still lots of time before the next election. Idoubt they'll be able to form a government, but they could still come well out on top of the Reform. I predict they'll be the official opposition next time around, with a decent showing.

This was overblown.

No, I don't buy the "open the doors" argument.

First off, the private clinics thing is only for optional surgeries, and for those who don't require overnight stays. Second off, the cost is still covered as normal just like public hospitals work. Third off, it's been happening for over 10 years in several provinces, Alberta's the only one who passed specific legislation regulating the process...

Well, in Calgary at least there actually is a Muslim school for example, while it's technically under the Public District.

We also have several other specialty schools, from athletics to vocational schools.

You've got a point there, Asher. Although, I do still have the sinking feeling that any party that comes to power in Canada will just revert to the totalitarian ways of the current Libs. Sigh.

I doubt it. Like the man says, the CRAP ( ) has its support concentrated which makes for seats. The PC doesn't. Every vote it gets in Ontario or Quebec is wasted.

That started out as part of the British North American Act way back when, as a concession to the Catholic French in Upper Canada. And it eventually found it's way into the constitution. To change that, we'd need to have another version of Meech Lake, and you know well that went!

The west won't vote PC because we remember how the PC's messed up Winnipeg's bid for a large government contract. The PC is still seen as the party for the East, made up of Easterners.

The PC won't beat the Libs in Ontario because the Libs have solid support across Canada. Quebec is the same. Finally, increased NDP support in the Maritimes might make the PC's lose seats.

I predict the PC will lose all its' seats before it becomes the official opposition.

The leadership conference will have to ditch Joe Clark before they have a hope of anything.

The Tories will be the next government of Canada, after the good people of Ontario are good and sick of 10 or 20 or 30 years of Liberals.

Kitty can hope all he wants, the NDP are never gonna get there. At least he'll be happy that the CA won't either.

I just found the diversification numbers: http://www.apegga.org/whatsnew/pegg...on_benefits.htm

In 1985, energy accounted for 37.2% of economic activity.
In 1997, energy accounted for 21.4%.

The diversification still continues today. Klein is giving massive funding to programs like ACCESS and ICT and recruiting giant technology companies to the province to help out the information technology sector...

And labour relations are at the lowest point they've been for a long, long time, plus our emergency rooms sometimes have to turn people away, because they're so understaffed, and over worked. Everyone I've talked to who's been to a hospital lately see it as well.

Don't they have a new premier there? How is he doing?

Yeah, Ernie Eves. He's spending most of his time trying to fix the damage that Harris caused. I have to give him credit, he's making an effort at least to be diplomatic. In a way I almost feel sorry him, he starting out with all sorts of bad blood to smooth over, if he hopes to be elected himself.

Why? Neither school board was particularly interested in doctrinal teachings when I went through the public school system (due to large presence of non-Christian students and almost equal mixture of both Prods and Catholics). By now I'd be surprised if they ever mentioned it.

You know that church attendance in Quebec is lower than in any other province, right? Things have changed since the days the Church ran things around here. The religious split was an anachronism 20 years ago, and they finally got rid of the formal distinction.
