It's a gigamap... I think that counts as large. I have no idea if the city limit increases on gigamaps (since small/med maps are the same, it can't be a function of the total number of tiles) or for that matter, if all custom maps behave differently from 'regular' maps...

About those disbanded cities... Browse Apolyton AD-FREE

As has been said, the result will not be a NON. It will be attached for support to the nearest city. But remember, the idea was to do this after going to democracy, yes?? By then explosives may be in hand or close. Engineers can scoot over to its city and join twice as fast. An engineer in the city before it disbands can build a road on the empty spot to further speed it up. So, the idea still has merit, I think.

Good luck, guys.

So, when I played my turns, I built a few more cities afterwards .

Yes 6. No double unhappies till 12, and we can use cheapass warriors till then. HG will be up if all goes to plan, which will give us even more expansionary power.

for location of specials have you tried Hut Finder?

I've not tried the hutfinder, though I left everything so that those who want to can.

Should I switch rather than relying on my blind civ skills? What's the opinion of the players here?

Kudos to you for avoiding the dark side, young master.

I am anti-hutfinder. Huts are meant to be located randomly. Unfortunately, there's a code to the 'randomness' which has been cleverly picked up by some of the better players... but I think that goes against the spirit of the game.

No offense to the SGs who created the hutfinder... it's just not for me.

Say what you will about using the hut finder, especially for finding huts. But there is so much more to the tool. I'm speaking particularly about the 'specials' tab. In spite of the excellent lessons by Straybow and others, I'm still shaky about locating some hidden specials. With the hut-finder tool I have a back check for my 'noodling', and for that I am very appreciative. I hate losing time to mining the wrong grass and not 'finding' a special.

Do you keep handy a copy of Oedo years?? Do you feel guilty using it??....

Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

I don't use the hutfinder either. Neither do I 'click in the black' to find hidden cities and continent numbers.
Poor AI must be given a chance and I don't wish to play this game (or any other game) with a number of spreadsheets around me and a computer #2 calculating everything I might need.

I'm dubious about hidden specials. Again, not really in the spirit of the game, IMO. I can usually figure out where they are by the time I'm interested in mining them - but I seldom do it, unless I would have anyway (i.e. foresting a river).

Yes, I keep that handy. No, I don't feel guilty about using it - first, because I usually forget to revolt in the right year and it does me more harm than good - and second, because it's a matter of degree. Knowing the oedo years don't bother me as much as knowing where all the huts are. For me, knowing what year to revolt in isn't a 'spoiler' the way knowing where all the huts are, is.

@La Fayette - agree with you re spreadsheets.

Black clicking is like using over the horizon radar. (ducks)

Some of us--well, me-- are not so accomplished as the better players like you La Fayette. We (I) need these aids to compete at your level, I think.

I bet we agree that having fun is the key consideration. And so, to each his own.

In the beginning days we probably all did such things as reloading. As we improved, those 'bad' habits dropped off and we began to play 'straight'. In this sense, your way may, indeed, be the future for me.

But until then, I don't mind being in the wake of SG[1] and others.

STYOM,

I'm not sure what you mean mentioning "the spirit of the game." If you meant "in the spirit of (my) game," then the comment begins to make more sense. And for sure, everyone should play by their own 'code of laws'. But your tone borders on a superiority that is making a judgement about using received and applied wisdom. Is that what you mean??

I agree with not using multiple computer's to 'game' the game.

So, we have 3 cities, all size 2, and all building settlers. We have 60 gold, and are 49/60 finished with currency. 3 turns to next tech, at 20 turns per tech... can get to 12 turns fidding with science and workers, still 3 turns to tech though. Settlers look to be headed to the new island, so push for that

2450 horse finds a whale, looks like specials should be south along the coast for the trireme - find whale, so unload settlers on grassland
2400 could get second whale if build on forest 1 space south, but with all the non-1 movement terrain, founded EuroDisney
2350 Currency,
*pause for dramatic effect*
select Trade
science jumps from 60 to 75 beakers
start trireme back towards Steamboat Willy
2300 science down to 65 beakers, minor worker fiddling and tickling
2250 fantasia settlers, 13/65
2200 Steamboat Willy Settlers, ED (warrior) hut (horsie supported by ED), 19/75
2150 25/75,
2100 hut Trade
2050 select Literacy (over Masonry and CB), found Middleton, 38/78 science
1900 start transporting settlers towards next city, 61/78 science

not much happened after i founded Middleton - tickled a couple units - we are 17 beakers from Literacy - assuming no cities founded next turn and no rushed settlers, we can get literacy by 1800 with Free willy using the fish 1 turn...

pondered building caravans at the mid-point, till i read the thread about going for 6-12 cities, so continued building settlers except for a trireme in fantasia (half finished), so put it off for the next player - at some point should aim for one of our WoW options (couple of AI's building Pyramids atm)

anyway, passing the torch

The Rabid Reign Increase the size of your Attachments

The Rabid Rodent claims the Imperial Throne by right of arms, the four other contenders now lying in a bloody heap in the Palace, and howls in anguish. His incisors gnash and foam spills from the corners of his mouth as he surveys the chaos that is his Empire.

Despite his best efforts as an Imperial Advisor, the Gardens have not been started and now a couple of civs have started on the Pyramids our nation is behind in the Wonders race - our cities are misplaced, we have no discernable infrastructure to expedite the build. Drastic measures are called for.

His first instruction to the nation is that his predecessors should be burnt in effigy in every city square - uncontent with this, he orders their tombs violated and their decaying heads displayed on pikes at the gates to Steamboat Willy.

Our Nation needs the Holy Gardens for survival!

"We will have the Gardens, or you may have my head!"

The Rabid Reign commences:

1900 = Economy switched to shield based; Science abandoned in favour of gold; Free Willy and Steamboat Willy switched to caravans - I hope we have time; Fantasia switched to Diplo another 15 shields for the Gardens;
1850 = Caravans tickled - treasury exhausted; Much gnashing of incisors;
1800 = Fantasia Diplo rushed; New Capital founded caravan started;
1750 = Indians move Capital; Caravan tickled;
1700 = Chinese move Capital; Indians start GL; Literacy -> Masonry selected (Republic and Wheel also offered); Caravan tickled and Diplo disbanded into it at New Capital;
1650 = Aztecs move Capital; Workers rearranged again;
1600 = Caravans in Free Willy and Steamboat Willy - revert to Settlers;
1550 = Tickle caravan;
1500 = Roman Horseman sighted near Free Willy; Contact Romans, gift Trade, Peace, swap Pottery for Masonry (the only Demo tech they possess), swap maps; Rush caravan in New Capital - we are two turns off!
1450 = Switch research to The Republic (it won't be offered next time, neither will the Wheel [Edit - Ignore this nonsense - I had forgotten this started as a scenario and that the tech tree is open]); New Capital start The Holy Gardens; Oh for a road had we had one we would be home;
1400 = Three caravans, a trireme, a diplo, a horse and 16g = 200 shields;
1350 = New Capital builds The Hanging Gardens, starts Warrior;
1300 = Aztecs get Philosophy; otherwise somewhat anti-climactic;
1250 = Warrior in New Capital, starts Palace;

The Rabid Rodent relaxes, his work for this generation is done. He forgives his forbears their (many) transgressions and gives their (rather mutilated) bodies a collective State Funeral with much Pomp and Circumstance. He hopes that his successors will look kindly upon his reign and retires to contemplate his navel - thinking about his return and the contemplation of naval matters

Enjoy, SG[1]

That's why I said 'they' not us.

My worry was that we couldn't leave HG too long because of that.........I strongly feel getting it at least triples our chances of winning.

And yes, you will need some defence......I recommend some counterattacking units, and some diplos to 'smooth over any disagreements'.

I recommended somewhere above this post that we move the capital and build HG there

That is the intention, right, SG[1]? We ARE going to repurchase a Palace?

If not, I thoroughly recommend it

Not a lot of people know this, but that's eerily reminiscent of Walt's original vision for the Anaheim theme park.
