Well, that's the problem. They haven't been doing that.

Hell, they're refusing to redraw federal election lines in Alberta. We've been having a huge boom in population, but we don't get any more say.

Ridings are supposed to have 70,000 people, several in Calgary have 120,000 and rising and the Liberals still don't want to redraw them.

Then we elect a senator, Chretien goes and appoints a Liberal cronie to represent Alberta instead of who we elected.

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

Same with BC, especially ridings in the Lower Mainland. One of the ridings in Surrey has the most people of any Federal Riding in Canada.

Overall, BC is not too bad because the North keeps their boundaries as the population shrinks. It just means the people in the Lower Mainland have less say in the government.

I think in Alberta it's something like 10% right now.

The same poll revealed that ~50% of Albertans would favour separation if there's not "significant reforms" by 2010 though.

Got spare money?

There aren't separation numbers, but alienation:
quote:
According to a January, 2001, poll, Alberta has surpassed Quebec as the hotbed ofalienation -- 47% to 30%

quote:
Albertans already contribute more than any other Canadians to the cost of
maintaining a unified nation -- $2,600 per capita annually for transfers and
equalization versus $1,800 per second-place Ontarian -- but receive
measurably less influence over federal policy. Indeed, federal policies on
not only the environment, but also on social programs, language,
immigration, criminal justice, firearms and a host of other issues, are not
just opposed by most Albertans, but are offensive to them.

It's too bad we couldn't convince more of those Ontarians to vote Alliance, because this would actually implement some of the reforms necessary to keep BC and Alberta in confederation.

Too bad the Albertans left the PC in a huff and pushed a far right-wing Western agenda that nobody else in the country is willing to vote for.

It's like separatists complaining that nobody in the rest of Canada votes BQ

So, how does this splice with the CA's latest poll numbers? running 4th place, aren't they?

Why would the US government *NOT* want the oil of Alberta, and why would they want BC?

B.C. would not be a good fit for the US because they are way too far removed from the US politically, they had a NDP government. Alberta would probably have political views closer to that of the US mainstream.

Put an end to popups!

It doesn't make much sense that the US would want a province that's elected socialist governments and historically fiscally irresponsible, compared to a right-wing province with billions of barrels of oil and HUGE US investment numbers...

Yes, you have many trees. But how does lumber REMOTELY compare with oil?

Yeah, we all know how the US has a pacific port shortage, and how the US administration hates rednecks.

You replace rednecks with socialist hippies, which is more appealing to Bush and Cheney (Cheney spent a lot of his time in Calgary when he ran Halburton -- I'd think he'd prefer Alberta over BC )

Trees are a renewable resource.

We also have a highly educated technical workforce well adapted for the US markets.

The US has filled it's quota of rednecks. There is no demand.

You're a frickin' mennonite, how dare you insult rednecks.

There surprisingly are very few "rednecks" in Alberta, they live in the rural areas as farmers usually.

Calgary, for example, has the second-highest rate of post-secondary education in Canada, behind Halifax (which is skewed due to all their colleges).

No mention in the article if Klein was drunk or sober. That's an important consideration with those Western Premiers.

Anyway, the US already has a state full of real Texans. Why on earth would we need a province full of cheap imitations?

And if BC ever splits, it'll be to join with Washington State and Oregon (and me).

You were the one claiming Alberta had rednecks, and that the US likes rednecks. Now you say they have few?

Trees are so valuable the US has a 27 percent tariff on lumber. They only protect valuable US industries.

I don't know if you realize this doesn't help your point. You just proved that the US timber lobby is so powerful it managed to put a 27% tariff on BC lumber. And since this is the case, why on earth do you think the US would let BC be part of the nation, since they have to ditch tariffs in that case.

If they let BC in, the industries in competition are now in co-operation with the rest of the US. Selling BC lumber would aid in balancing the US trade deficit.

Another option is that they could demand raw logs be shipped from BC to American mills in the south, once BC is part of the Union.

Huh? If they let BC in, the companies in competition are still in competition. Only this time, there's no tariffs.

Companies don't cooperate with eachother instead of compete if they're in the same country...
