It’s all subjective of course – there is applying the laws to keep the game honest, and then there’s pointless endless blow ups. In Mr Landers case this weekend that included stopping scrums constantly because they weren’t exactly on his mark. Now even I can see that’s a little overboard.

Have you read anything about the end game controversy in the Wales-Ireland game? In injury time Wales are attacking two points in the lead when the Irish centre (either the Aussie or NZ born one – I forget) strays offside in defence. Lander signals a penalty/advantage whilst Wales retain the ball. In the next phase an Irish forward also strays offside and the Welsh player spills the ball from that contact. Still signalling advantage, Lander then drops his arm, all the time saying nothing. Ireland pick up the ball, and because they are mainly over the game line already storm 50 metres up field where O’ Gara drops off a ruck and slots the match winning drop goal.

Why were Wales not given a penalty for the consecutive offsides? It’s caused some friction here and Lander was apparently saluted in Cardiff that night as “an English Irishman”.

It’s even been suggested he had one eye on the grand finale for next week. I don’t buy that incidentally before you ask – I just think he is a poor referee.

After the first half on Sunday I thought France had recovered fully. The way Traille was breaking the line at will was damn scary and made me grateful we had already played France. But something happened in the second half – just like against us the Italians stopped popping the pill from the boot and kept hold of it. They built phases patiently and came back with some nicely worked tries. Admittedly France took their foot off the gas but one has to wonder what Italy could achieve if they played for eighty minutes some time?

btw I think I claimed a third game leaking no tries? I was of course wrong, it’s only two. The Italians scored one very nicely taken try against us.

So next weekend – who do you guys think will win and why so?

Subjective now, is it? I thought, when I complained about it, it was fine NH refs applying the laws as against slack SH refs applying a slack SH interpretation of the rules.

Come on, you're not wriggling off this hook. It included resetting scrums that weren't on the ref's mark? What else was included?

That aside, we're getting a lot of refs worrying about the exact mark in S12 too. Another IRB directive, obviously.

Didn't hear about that. Sounds like the sort of incompetence you see from time to time. A very similar thing happened in one of the rep matches here last season. Can't recall which one, but it resulted in a score that shouldn't have happened. I think Caligastia commented on it at the time, too. He might remember the match.

About the Six Nations Tournament and the Ireland-England game, I must admit my heart (and yes, I have one) is divided. It would be great to see the Irish players win their first grand slam since some decades but I really can't imagine them winning against England when they have struggled against Wales.

The English forwards are impressive and the Irish scrum will certainly explode in the second half... provided the referee in charge of the game is not a crook from the Southern Hemisphere ( ).
Needless to speak about Dawson and Wilkinson...
The English backs are equally good, players like Ben Cohen and Jason Robinson are able to pierce through the defence and are quickly supported by players like Neil Back, Dallaglio and Martin Johnson...
I am convinced England will win this game...

Let me see what was he pulling up? Line out tunnel (as per the current vogue). Every free kick and penalty to make it from his mark as well (no quick takes allowed). Plenty of back foot infringements (again very fashionable). The scrum for being straight and square. A few ropey forward pass calls. Not straight in the lineout…

What I am saying is that even I felt he was stopping the game gaining any fluency.

I think the laws oblige him to call it. Just as they're obliged to call all rulings. The hand and arm gestures are only there for confirmation and to inform the crowd.

No, I was asking whether they were Puy lentils. They're a variety of green lentil, considered one of the best. I just looked them up in my Laruousse Gastronomique - they're grown in or around the Velay, wherever that might be.

If she didn't use them, a severe reprimand is in order. OTOH, there are a couple of other very fine French varieties - a green lentil grown in the Haute-Loire, a Champagne Brown lentil from the same area, and a Blonde Lentil grown in the Cantal, wherever that might be.

Dangerously on topic but I finally had a quick blast with CTP2 the other week (with the sole Activision patch applied). As busted as it is (and it looks like it shipped Alpha) I rather like it – vastly more character than I personally found in Civ 3 if with a very passive AI. I must download some mods.

Of course I’ll have to get broadband at some point I suppose – to get whipped as Civ MP.

Actually, I usually play the Aztecs, but supply my own city names. I like the yellow colour, it's easy to see. Tamerlin finished up playing the Babylonians. He said he either plays the yellow civ or the Babs but I beat him to the yellow one. I was surprised - I thought he'd grab the French. The delicious irony is that we're playing with a couple of AI civs just for fun - and the French are making his life misery!

Oh, and we've just knocked off after 2 1/2 hours of a very pleasant game while you were slaving over a hot keyboard!

CtP2 is IMO the best Civilization like game around... if you download the Super Apolyton Pack v2.0 I can send you the unit Updater2 (along with other modifications I find necessary) I have adapted for the SAP 2, an essential addition to the game as you will see. The SAP 2 is mainly CtP2 as it should be, no modification of the original game concepts and a stronger AI.

Very disappointing given it’s the biggest game before RWC. After all everyone already knows Aus and NZ are good sides – but Ireland have not faced a test like England yet. France, with respect to them, misfired totally in Dublin. England should prove how good Ireland really are.

Yes it was a really pleasing session though I will certainly fail miserably at creating a real civilization... I have to learn the game again, I even forgot to build a settler just after my first defender...
I had also forgotten a unit that was not in a fortress in the radius of one of your city would produce a discontent in the city it was built in...

IMO Civ3 isn't worth the box it is wrapped in and PTW does not change anything to the gameplay.

Havak, remember you also need Modswapper 1.5 to play the SAP2 as the Super Apolyton Pack must be ran from Modswapper.

When you install the SAP2 don't forget to change the DebugSlic=Yes line to DebugSlic=No in the Userprofile.txt file you will find in the C:\Program Files\Activision\Call To Power 2\ctp2_program\ctp folder. If you don't do it the game gets buggy in the modern era... Your current saved game won't work with the SAP 2.

A Pork Pie is basically fat wrapped in fat. Much favoured by rugby front rowers, and the intake increases expotentially according to the years in retirement. But very tasty, nevertheless.

A Pork Pie Hat, OTOH, is a style of gentleman's hat - small crown resembling an upturned pie, with a small rim around it. Just to keep the food analogy going, and to toss a skin blemish analogy into the mix, they looked a bit like a pimple on top of a pumpkin. They were briefly in fashion in the early-mid 1960s, although retired tightheads have been seen in them from time to time, apparently.

Back on topic for a sec (and may I just say its a sad sad day for this thread when I'm the one on topic ) - it looks like somebody in the NZRFU (assuming they administrate the NZ 7's team?) has been a bad boy.
It seems a rather controversial e-mail was sent to one of the team managers, courtesy of a Fijiian counterpart, who may or may not have been a rugby sleeper (perhaps Havak could tell us how that works? ) agent, detailing many things the FRU would have wished remained undetailed.
It seems that their team chosen for the next round contains wholly new (to the eyes of the NZRFU anyway) players, with tactical surprise being the objective.
Now the surprise may not be quite such a big one ...

With the latest patch it’s quite playable. There’s simply no flexibility in how you can play it. Personally I think they created a game to close all the loop holes the ‘Super’ players exploited in good old Civ 2 and forgot it needed to be interesting to a much wider audience.
