Philisophical meeting place: La Academia Increase the size of your Attachments

Well, with those GoW immigrantes coming to our nation, talking about those concepts, I started to think, were do we come from? Were do we go to?
What is the true nature of things and of the universe? So I invite you thinkers to aid me on this. Feel fre to wander, La academia is a place to think , to write, to teach and to speak.
Suggest questions and discuss them here.

Hope this will wnlight our kingdom in a way of knowledge and light.

Untill soon,
Nuclearis Winterius the II

Oh, this is a new place! "La Academia"!

Are you going to investigate the hierarchy between all the spirits and gods? I know that there are some things that a poor mortal just can't understand, but anyway I would like to know a bit more about that.

The academy is not mine, nor yours. This follows a weird concept, were there is no centrallized command. of course, this can only work for studies...
anyway, I believe the spirits are tools of the gods. Because, as we, lesser humans, are tools of higher humans like the Despot, the lesser spirits are tools of Higher spirits.

Hmm, this brings up a question, if when we die our spirits live on, then the gods might be the spirits of deceased Despots?
Waiting for your ideas, fellow thinkers.
Nuclearis Winterius the II,

PS:. I see lots of people viewing the academy, curious, but without saying a word. Cīmon, donīt be shy, step in and speak!
This is a place for all to speak freely.

* Aidun Cian, governor of Saragossa and First Priest of Luna el Salvador enters la Academia. *

Hola master Nuclearis, good friend. I've brought my son Aidun with me. I want him to get some education and I believe this is the right place to get some. I want my son to be well educated when the day comes that the governership is a too heavy burden and I have to pass it on to him. I myself have been teached only the commands of the great Luna el Salvador by my father and the god himself.
Algebra, geometria, logica, philosophia, rhetorica and musica are however important and useful to a governor and other leaders.

I trust that you can educate my son well.

What do you need to educate my son, Nuclearis?

Our civilization has undergone a sudden waive of intellectual pursuits as we have learned to properly prepare maps but, more importantly, have devised a means to debate and learn about the world around us, and the many gods that control our fates.

Let us use these pursuits to make our children wiser and to also please the gods that watch over Espania so that our nation may grow and learn and prosper.

I don't have sons or daughters myself, Maestro Nuclearis Winterius, but I would be glad to send my nephew to study with you. I hope to marry a nice and pretty Spanish girl someday, but in case something happened to me (may spirits don't allow it) he should take my position. If you accept to teach my nephew I can give you a small gold sum to pay his maintenance and some of the maintenance of the Academia itself.

Nuclearis, it is very kind of you that you want to teach my son for free, but I guess that a nice donation wouldn't hurt la Academia. The House of Cian supports this wholehearted and the family not one of the poorest noble families due to the booming jewelry and dyes trade with the Arabians.

What about 200 goldpieces, hmm?

I am now preparing a class at the Academia, teaching navigation at sea using professional written maps. We can soon have some skilled navigators sent to The Explorers Guild to write as they navigate. In the guild there are rumors that if they travel too far they would fall off the earth, and down into emptyness. Well, first they need to build a naval vessel that can hold out water and sail well.

What about chaining up as many slaves we can get room to in the vessel, then giving them oars and order them to push the vessel forth using those? I can play a drum to keep the pace.

As Assistant High Priest, Senor Fernand de History Guy Calamari is one of our premier philosophers.

Recently, he was in Barcelona to speak of the higher things. A great crowd had amassed before him, and he began to talk about all things that were high and transcended.

The crowd was bored.

Sensing this, Calamari began to tell a story about a man who owned an ass, and a man who wanted to rent that ass from him.

In this story, the man who rented the ass took the animal out, and rested under its shadow for shade.

Soon, along came the man who owned the ass and he sternly rebuked the man who had rented the beast, saying that he had rented the animal out for work, not to be used as shade!

The other man responded that as the man who had rented the ass, he could do whatever he wished with it.

The ass's owner responded that though he had lent the man the ass, he had not lent him the ass's shadow, and so he would have to pay him extra for it.

The man refused, and the two angrily argued over the shadow of the ass.

Suddenly, Calamari stopped. He turned, and walked away, down the Madridian road.

The crowd followed, and overtook him. Stopping him, they asked him to finish the story. They wanted to hear the outcome of the story of the shadow of the ass.

Calamari said calmly in response, "I came to speak of the higher things, but you wish me instead to speak of the shadow of an ass."

What a pity I was not there at the moment, but devoted to my god. Fernand, it must have meen very funny to see the people ashamed for what they did. Very wise from you however. Anyway, I hope this Academia with Nuclearis Winterius II leading it can bring philosophy under the people and not only make it accessible to us theologists.

The objective is exactly this, to bring philosphy to common people.
Many common folks came in here, and are getting really used to the thinking and the developing of theorems, with the development of questions and such... and many lords... well, many lords havenīt even dropped by... hehe

And Seņor history guy, do not blame the poor workers for having no interest in philosophy. Blame, instead, the ruling group, for not providing adequate conditions for the people to study. The common citizen is not stupid, he is just disencouraged to study and think by the lack of schools and libraries. Also, we have not an Education system that can really reach the lower classes. Only the noble get to stufy, and many nobles refuse to!

As to finish, Iīd like to leave something for you to think about... is there really a hierarchy between spirits, as many suggest?
how can higher beings be hierarchized by us lesser beings? How can we say that a god is a higher beign than a spirit if we donīt understand the spirits?
Think about it,

Seņor Calamari, if anyone wants to hear and even see the shadow of an ass, all they have to do is come to the College of Etiquette at daybreak. They can go across the street, and stand outside the window of my annoying neighbour’s house across the street. Sure enough, at daybreak an ass will appear from the upper story and cast a shadow. Not only that, I guarantee that the ass will announce the sunrise with a loud noise and a great gust of wind. We don’t need roosters here in the city

What philosophy they will learn from that I cannot imagine, but I’m sure someone at the Academy will think of something wise to learn from it

Finally! A real place of learning!
I Juan-Scriblos de Menendez de Nuņez has since I helped pioneer writing been waiting for such a place.
And yes I agree we must educate all our free citizens.
Also we who are educated must not devote ourselves merely to teaching, but engage in great feats of thought and discussion to propel our knowledge ever forward.
For example the spirits. My cousin Apestare has spoken to me many times of his travels and he is now at work writing his memoirs and a great work of faith as well, describing all the greatness he has seen on the way.
I will ask him to come here and speak to us, though he is a man not fond of those who do not know the ways of the warrior.

Should a slave have the right to an education?
You would probably say: No, they won't have use for it.
I am gonna start a percussion class for galley slaves. (also some musical courses for the Spanish Army to enhance morale).
So they can keep a throttle-rythm for our warships, and encourage combat morale.

Of course, the slaves will only be educated for the basic jobs they have to do, to make them perform better and be happy, so they can stay loyal to us nobles.

My oldest son, Eduardo, has taken to spending his time at the new Madrid barracks, watching the soldiers train and playing war games with his friends. He fancies himself a defender of Spain, and tells me that he longs to fight the barbarians when he is old enough.

My second oldest son, Pablo, just recently wandered into this enclave ... that is called an Academia. These facilities are not suited for a noble or our children. It seems that most of the students and teachers just sit around outside and argue about faciful things. I am unsure if this method of instruction really helps our children. We are a literate nation, yet there are no books. Only the noble class reads and writes, and only for the purpose of maintaining our holdings and keeping records.

Pablo in particular seems enthralled with these recent teachings of the many gods. He believes that we can control our world if we discover how to gain favor with each of the many gods, and he believes that many of the unexplained miracles of our daily life are the effects of the gods' power in our world. I believe he learned these things from this academia.

I will ask the Watcher to investigate this academia to see if it is putting foolish and improper thoughts into the heads of our children. I also will carefully watch this institution to ensure that it does not destroy our culture and corrupt our youth.

And how to use swords, and how to use bows, and how to write forged documents, and how to spy, and how to overthrow their masters. Certainly, the education of our slaves would be helpful...to them.

For the common people, however, I do believe we must have education. Without education, society can get no where, because we have no discovered how to think. The education of our society must be our second priority, next to arming our people to fight the common foe that would destroy us. I believe that we must let the people learn, and learn now, for we cannot afford to become a nation of fools as the Lux Invictans became. Especially not with the wise Arabs that build their empire to the north.

As for a heriarchy in the spirit world...the thought is interesting, but it is totally mistaken. Only gods can have total power over spirits. How can a spirit be greater than another? He is but energy, wiser than us, yes, but energy all the same. For the time being, of course, hierarchy on earth is needed, but in heaven, there is but equality under the watchful eye of the Divine.

My King, philosophy is an art, not an attempt to educate. Of course, a school of philosophy, such as this place should be, must have a library of scripts of the ancient writers, else we should learn nothing from our past. I request that we start building some libraries when we can do so, and I dream of a Great Library in the future, where all the world's knowledge shall be stored. Is this not a high goal? I believe it is achievable, however, and we should strive for it.

Well, my father used to say in such occasions: "The more simple, the better it is."

BTW: I have a question to discuss with the people here: is there life after the death?

I have explained to Seņor Torquemada that there is a significal difference between life and death: a dead body does not respond anymore while a living body does if it is awake.

I have my opinion on the issue of life after death, but I want to hear your ideas on it.

Among the remnants of a heathen language, long-dead, a saying holds that "in vino veritas"... Ruminate on that, and let me propose that we combine the newly-founded Academia with the legendary Iberian Delight.

Much would be said; little remembered... unless, perhaps, we can find ourselves from among... ourselves a first-class stenographer with a passion for temperance and a tolerance for my lack thereof.

Senor Aidun! You cannot claim control of the Academy! You are not some sort of 'Philosopher Laureate', and even if you had a chance to be...how could we let you be head of the Academy without knowledge of life after death?! And you, who converses with the gods!!

Of course there is life over death. Go over to the Iberian Spirit House. You can see for yourself. Sometimes, the spirits pop out of the woodwork and ask you questions. Deep questions.

"Have you lived a good life?"

"What is the cry of the Bull of Herminor?"

"How can you look in the eyes of the ferryman?"

"Would you like some tea?"

"Do you have a mint on you?"

"Is that an Oriole?"

"Hey, wait, are you wearing my shirt?"

Please Fernand, don't get upset. You wouldn't have been upset if you would have listened to my words, but you listened with half an ear.

I said: "Hereby I want to subscribe myself as philosopher at this Academia."

If I wanted to claim control of the academy I would have used the word of, implicitly claiming the Academia, but I have NOT.

Nuclearis corrected me by informing me that one cannot subscibe himself as a philosopher, but "philosophate freely". That is what I'm doing. I meant that I intended to join the club. You have to agree that there is no offence in such.

Later on you listened again with half an ear: I did NOT say that I don't know anything of life after death.

I said: "I have my opinion on the issue of life after death, but I want to hear your ideas on it."

Of course I know very well about life, death and afterlife, but I wanted to start a discussion on this issue. I'm a priest you know, and priests are supposed to know such things!

Please listen carefully to the speakers here and don't just rant against them.

Thank you!

Allright apologies accepted . Lets go on. May I ask again what the people's thoughts about afterlife are: is there life after the death?

BTW, Fernand, I have three earhorns: one of my father, one of my grandfather and one of a good friend of my grandfather, all three are of silver with blue lapis imported from Egypt and blue opals from out of the north.
They are very worthy, but because I don't need one and you are a good friend om mine, I give you the one the friend of my grandfather once owned, but which was given back by his family when he died.

HEy, people really get upset at one another for small thing here eh? Hehe, thankfully no wounds inflicted to none this far.
About the spirits voices at the spirit house, wouldnīt this ve somehow related to that gas that emanates from that fend in the ground... or to the great amounts of alcohool consumed by the priests... just maybe....
This question of life after death is a problem... our wisemen tell that, at least phisically, there is no life after death. Who knows?

All I really know is that I know nothing.
