Master Zen-

FFZ (not in this game) came from ACOL and Apolyton
CGN came from Apolyton mostly... although in its later years-- late 2002, a lot of CFCers exodused to it and Gamecatcher

So apolyton has had its exoduses.

and in fact, Seeker (I think), CornMaster, and a few other major poly posters migrated to CFC around Dec 2000

DRAFT LETTER TO GCA Get a bigger avatar today!

Since contact with GCA is now imminent, here is a draft letter I am writing. Please add any suggestions or corrections and let me know if I "give away" too much!

---------------

To the Ambassador of Gamecatcher Alliance,

Greetings from Apolyton! We have recently come across your civilization and are intrigued to find out more. Our people believe that it would be in both of our civilization's best interests to be at peace and share technology. We are willing to make an effort towards this. Would you be willing to sign a non-aggression pact with us for the duration of 30 turns? We could renew it after 25 turns or throw it out with no consequences.

We know that your civilization started with the knowledge of alphabet and ceremonial burial. Our own civilization started with alphabet and masonry. We are currently working towards bronze working and will be done shortly. I hope that we can come to an agreement on tech trading! We would like to discuss a tentative proposal, as we have pottery, masonry and soon will have bronze working to offer. Is there anything you would like to offer in exchange for this knowledge? Also, would it be possible to find out what your current research status is and what you may be researching in the future? We would like to research something different from you so that we can trade to each other, speeding up both our collective research! Let me know how you feel about this.

Speaking of alphabet, I am quite glad to learn that you guys have knowledge of the alphabet (and possibly gals? We here at Apolyton are apparently only of a homogenous gender at the moment, which makes procreation rather difficult... and boring). It makes communicating much easier. Have you had contact with the Elucidians, who are apparently just north of one of your cities? They have no knowledge of alphabet, which made it especially hard to communicate with them. Our ambassador to them sent them a friendly letter urging peace between our civilizations. Their reply was a drawing of a stick figure with what appeared to be a spear sticking out of its head! We're not sure what this means though and at the moment, we believe we are on good terms with them; however there seems to be a slight distrust as they feel they are squeezed between you and us. We should work out a plan so that we may educate these primitive people at once, that way we can properly communicate with them!

We look forward to future communication between our two peoples. I think I speak for all of Apolyton when I say that we only want peace and cooperation.

To facilitate communication between our two nations, we would be willing to have a chat online between our leaders to discuss any pertinent information. Do you have an appropriate place where we could chat and be able to maintain a log of all proceedings that occurred? We would even be able to do this at our own site, as we have an IRC server. If you are interested, please let me know and I will fill you in on the connection details and we could go ahead and schedule a time.

If you need to reach me, you can contact me in a few different ways. You can PM me at either Apolyton or at your own website under the name "WhiteBandit" and my private email is whitebandito@yahoo.com so you can reach me that way as well!

Until we meet again! J

WhiteBandit
Apolyton Ambassador to GCA

---------------

Edit 1: As per Togas!
Edit 2: Modified according to suggestions by Trip and ET.
Edit 3: Changed the offer of masonry to the offer of pottery to see where that gets us.
Edit 4: Updated based on Togas' science proposals.

WB,

And excellent opening letter.

Add in that we are willing to discuss a trade of Masonry for Ceremonial Burial. Ask them what they are researching and tell them that we'd like to try to research something different from them after we've finished BW, so we can trade with them in the future.

Advice to the other teams: To gain the diplomatic edge over Apolyton, have your ambassador dress up in high heels and lipstick and stuff coconuts or some other large round fruit down his shirt, and bounce the fruit around as much as possible.

BTW, how do you people think CDG will respond if we get a tech deal with GCA pretty quickly?

I think they'll be a little put off, after all, we had been on the verge of a tech deal amongst ourselves..

Anybody want to try for a 3-way deal? I don't really know what to think of this at the moment, I'll get back to it later..

Should I also add that provision into the proposal? "We can offer either pottery or masonry in exchange for Ceremonial Burial?" or is that too much information to give away? They could come back to us and say "Give us both for CB!"

Thoughts?

I think we should just ask if they traded CB with CDG. If they have, then telling them what we have has no point, since CDG has the same that we have minus Alphabet. If they haven't traded CB to CDG, then we can offer something then.

A couple of things:

1) make sure that your address them by their civ name and not their site name, this will sound more impressive in all of our correspondance with them

2) offer them a 30 turn non-agression pact, renewable after 25 turns. We want to be peaceful and this is a good way to let them be peaceful with us.

3) see if they are willing to chat online with our leadership (and theirs), to help speed up the first contact negotiations. Offer to have it here (like we did with Euclidia) or see if they have an appropriate place that we can meet (and have a proper log for later posting).

4) ask them if they have made contact with anyone else besides Euclidia?

5) Smile when you send it.....

That's all I can think of.

All of these are valuable comments. I concur. You have my permission to offer them a 30 turn NA pact.

As to other questions:

1) no "Pottery or Masonry" ... just offer Masonry for CB as a means to open negotiations. We want to bring them a fair tech offer right off the bat, and even if they don't need/want it, we want to give a good impression.

2) As we talk with them, we'll ask them about if they've met CDG later. I would prefer for us to listen and them to talk on this topic. I want to get their actual feelings about CDG without the "taint" of our own impressions and experience. After we've gotten their first impression, and established a straightforward relationship, we can begin to tell them about our experiences in a much of a neutral mannor as possible. The last thing we want is to go in with an agenda of attacking CDG, they'll see us as two-faced and bitter.

3) If we do meet them in chat, I want WhiteBandit to speak to them, and any of the rest of us who are in chat should introduce ourselves, small-talk a bit if appropriate, but stay quiet and let WB establish himself as the primary contact and friend to them.

Alright, should I take out this part of the letter then and we will just ask them if they know about the existence of CDG later?

No no, keep the Elucidian stick figure writing comedy in the letter. It's good humor and clearly intended to be received as such.

As for Pottery or Masonry or CB or WC or Wheel or whatnot ... frankly, I'm in a generous mood and I'll OK a virtually equal trade to get things off in the right direction. But to keep the uproar down around here ... I'll change my mind:

Let's just say we have Pottery & Masonry & soon Bronze Working to offer them. Ask them what they have, what they're working on, and what they'd like to trade with us.

UPDATE:

Kentonio (from CDG) met us in chat and passed on this "message" from GCA:

"they are aware you are coming to say hi and are ready to recieve you, they want you to know tho that they will not permit any further movement to the south. They consider it tresspassing and will not allow it

and...

"our troops are to the sw of that hill. we will be founding a city there in 2 turns. GC ask you to go south from that hill and they will meet you. We have no problems with your troops being inside that new city radius for a turn or two to facillitate that meeting"

Truth of fiction (most likely some truth to this) we have another "tresspass" issue to deal with and the problem of limited scouting doesn't seem to be going away.

We'll deal with this in time, but I DO NOT WANT us to address it in our first letter. Let's get them talking trades not scouting. Let's get a positive relationship first before we have to fight for our right to travel through uncontrolled territory again. :/

Hmm, I say we should just respect them and leave the lands of CDG and GCA, and go explore the eastern peninsula. The less they will see from us, the less they will feel threatened by us
And in the east many goodie huts, or maybe a fourth civ might be waiting for us.
Let's just concentrate on tech trading for now, as that will let us profit greatly.

Of course we don't tell them anything about the eastern lands. I am hoping they will be too busy protecting their lands against each other to contest the eastern lands with us. That is why a borderline with CDG is good, we have enough room to expand anyway, and it will better our relationship with them.

Suffering from ads?

I'd really hate for GCA to tell us we'd be trespassing if we wouldn't go inside their border's or even within one square. We have to draw the line somewhere as to where we WILL go and where another teams dictates our moves through unclaimed territory. This part of the land mass could very well balloon down here, and GCA could be making a very unreasonable request. What if they are hiding another Civ or another peninsula. We should make it clear that we will not trespass but are steadfast in our belief to 'scout' unclaimed lands. We say that we hear their request but feel that it is unjust and not within what we feel is in our scope of rights. We say that we are continuing our 'scouting' and while we do not want war; it would be them that would have to declare it.

This is a game with a set of rules; we should use those rules to make our case for continuing exploration. If they attack us will they not seem to be the agressors in such an instance. I think the most that they could reasonably ask for is a one tile space extending beyond their borders, all else, in my opinion, is unreasonable.

If they attack us, oh well, we lose a warrior(maybe, maybe they lose one ). We would make peace soon after because both teams realize that 3 teams trading techs is better than 2.

If they don't attack, we scout, respecting their border's and continuing trade as normal. We might even throw them a bone and tell them that if they allow us to scout South then we will 'have their back' in case CDG gets uppity on them. A sort of 'Secret Alliance' that only gets enforced if CDG was the instigator.

We need to take advantage of the fact that they are so close together, getting this started now is just as good of a time as any other down the road since I'm sure that their realitive closeness is at the forefront of their thoughts. We let them know that we would'nt really be intersted in CDG's land as much as they would. This will get them to lean towards our side much more easily.

I do completely agree with you. At the moment though, we don't know what kind of crap CDG have been feeding GCA about us. I want to send the letter as is to at least establish a friendly initial relationship and then soon after we will talk borders.

We might even get a reply to the initial letter with them telling us to leave their borders. Then we'll have to deal with it, but I'd prefer not pushing them until they make the first move.

I honestly don't know what GCA's demeanor toward us will be, but I do suspect that CDG has been telling them how agressive and pushy we are, so my intention is to at least be very friendly to GCA. They seem to know how to play the game of Civ (look at their early score ) and I would much like to have a reliable ally.

Yes, definatley don't start out with any demands, friendly and polite to start out with is the best policy. I was just reacting to how CDG 'said' GCA would react to us. We, of course, have to get a feel for them ourselves. The thoughts I had were mainly on how I'd like to see the situation develop should they demand; "Turn around and go back the way you came!"

GoodLuck WB; CDG may have already 'poisoned the well'!
