I'm feeling a bit like a jerk at the moment......
As stated before, blind patriotism SUCKS. All it does is cause a "feel-good" atmosphere which seems to rob people of all their common sense and intelligence ("The government would NEVER lie to us!!!" "Saddam! He's the one behind Sep11, not Bin Laden!!!"). This, in turn, lets rulers do whatever they please just so long as they repeat it over and over and over again, because they know that if a stupid person hears something many many times, they will come to support it.
In fact (yes, this is another dumb-american story), I was shopping in Smiths a few weeks before the war, and this guy was all pumped up about a Bush speech. I asked him why, when he said "Well, he presented pretty convincing evidence! I'm DEFINATELY for the war now.". I was shocked, because I did not think there was any evidence to present.
Alas, when I returned home, all Bush had said was "Saddam is an evil man........He must get rid of his weapons of mass destruction per secuirty council resolution 1441......Or there will be concequenes.......He has not...........not done this........" blah blah blah. Yes, this is only one story, 1 american out of 250,000,000, but......I'm pretty sure there are many other Americans like this.
As Hitler (how ironic!) once said: "What luck for rulers that men do not think." That is very true.
When the majority is under blind patriotism, anyone who comes up to question anything "patriotic" whether it be the peoples intelligence or government policies or whatnot, it suddenly "unpatriotic" and thereby not listened to by the collective. Then they can switch on the TV and get a nice dose of Bush and his so-called "evidence".
But thats not the only thing that blind patriotism causes. It causes HATE. People will resent you for flying your flag in their face. They may actually go around and burn the flag because it reminds them of you This is dangerous, especially when facing an enemy overseas such as Al Qaeda, because then you've just given Al Qaeda propaganda for one year, maybe two, until you screw up again. And trust me, you will.
But it also causes hate for those who disagree with you. Ah, for example: FRANCE. The American people bitterly hate France, and most of them probably don't even know where it is on the map. They hate France because of what they see on FOX, and that "everyone else is doing it". They hate France because of what the government says.
They say "friends would never do such a thing!". Yet their patriotism does not allow them to comprehend that a friend is not a "yes"-man. A friend will try to stop a person from endangering themselves. We hate them, and they are beginning to not really like us at all.......
Duh people, this is pretty basic stuff.

It's easy to burn the stars and stipes. All you need is a flag, a book of matches, and a ****ing idiot.

How did the USA piss in your Post Toasties? |
Does stuff just go in one eye and out the other?
We screw our poor. We screw our middle class. We screw over women, children, Black folks, Hispanics, American Indians, gays. We crush democratic movements abroad. Our government is in the pockets of the corporations. We just waged yet another illegal war.
There's so much to be angery over it's amazing I don't spend my days in a constant state of rage. That, however, is no way to spend a life.
Let's put it this way. If you son went around throwing bricks through people's windows, smashing their mailboxs, and kicking their dogs, would you be surprised that your neighbors didn't like him very much? Would you be pissed at your neighbors or your son? Would you support your son in continuing to terrorize his neighborhood or would you support him by trying to make him change his ways?
