Here's another picture I made which I find very curious. Those 1 storey buildings you see are situated right in the heart of Midtown Manhattan, completely surrounded by skycrapers, half a block away from Times Square and a few blocks away from the Empire State Building. And at the corner opposite of those buildings there's Bryant Park.
Point being is that this has to be a prime real estate location and yet you just see a bunch of measly shops. It was very odd to see it.

Colon: This indeed is very interesting. It seems that there is another 4-story building there, too.

Possible Reasons:
a)High-Rise not allowed by Zoning: yeah, right. moving on to....
b)Owners don't want to sell, because he loves this place, and intends to run this shop for the rest of his life: Yep. amazingly enough, this is a possiblity: chances, though, are slim.
c)Owner is e greedy: The owner is greedy, and wants to make the Real Estate sharks bleed. Smart owner. - usually, this is not a show-stopper, but sometimes, it is.
d) funny land plot division: this is a series of plots rather than a plot. some owners don't want to sell due to the reasons aforementioned.

in any case, this exists in Israel too. ( reasons: fall in demand for prime office space, high sales taxes on such land (50%!), etc.

Would be the most logical reason. You have such situations everywhere and I can't really think of another reason either. The odd thing however is that this isn't in some new business district, where you'd expect such 'anomolies' the most. Most of the towers in the area have been there for quite a while, if not since before WW2 then atleast since the 70's and 80's. You'd atleast expect some mid-rise there, like that building to the left.

BTW: you can also see that low rise in one of the pictures on the first page of this thread. (in the corner opposing the park) Looks bizarre.

If you consider 10-levels buildings to be high-rises, then you'd love Stuttgart. There are many of thos (ugly) buidlings in the city centre.

For example, here is my uni, 11 levels :


Here's where my gf and my friends live (the tall building below the tree zone), 16 levels:


There are quite a few horrors like this in Stuttgart centre. Come and you'll love it

Who said that I like high-rises? I live in one! The thread is about skyscrapers.

Besides, It's not like all old buildings are beautiful. I've been to Paris, and I've seen both.

I don't know if its been posted yet but I thought I'd show the most beautiful of skyscrapers and in my opinion they should have stopped building them then since they could have never improved on this, shown by the other buildings in the picture.

Why does all of downtown Paris look the same?

Look as the buildings in this pic follow the exact same pattern as the one in the 1st.

This one's a bit different. It was recently repainted.

Essen, where Iīm living, has built some High Rise buildings since the 90s.
Of course we havenīt such remarkable and big skyscrapers as some american cities cities or even Frankfurt, but itīs still a beautiful skyline



Probably the reason why Europe doesnīt have so many skyscrapers is, that it is much more expensive to build a Skyscraper than to just build a second Officebuilding somewhere else (Landprices arenīt very expensive).
So here in Germany just those companys who have really lots of money, which is companies on the Energy, Telecommunication or Banking Sector build skyscrapers, whereas most other companies prefer smaller Office buildings in the suburbs of the city.

Land Values are low? I thought that Land Values in europe was rediculously high, esp. in the cities.

In the cities yes,
but most of the corporations tend to have their administrative Buildings and Offices rather in the suburbs or in industrial areas, where Land values are lower.
The cities themselves are mostly dominated by Shopping areas with very few offices.

So most of the high rise buildings in Essen for example belong to RWE (Energy Corporation), some major Banks, the Telekom (german Telecommunications Corporation) and the large building in the right half of the skyline is the Administration of the City.

Most Corporations who have offices directly within the city have them on a renting basis and often share the building with shops and appartments.

Skyscrapers are cool when they are actually well-designed, building them for the sake of building them is just pretty dull especially those 1950-1970s international-style blocky buildings which have absolutely no personallity.

In places like Europe or Latin America is is very difficult to have a "skyscraper" core because of all the historic buildings in downtowns. I think Paris got it right by having skyscrapers concentrated in a seprate area from the historic core, namely the La Defense sector. This gives Paris a very dual-nature skyline. On the other hand, a city like Boston besides the fact that the skyscrapers are pretty dull (besides the John Hanckok tower and that clock-tower in the last pic which looks very nice) totally ruin the historic core (the expressway doesn't really help either). I'm very much amazed at how easily North American cities ruin the historic essense of their cities instead of making the business district separate.

London also has the same problem, skycrapers in the City of London build every other place. Good thing they made Canary Wharf, hopefully that will leave the rest of the city alone. Same problem with Mexico City, all our skyscrapers are built here and there, no order, no "skyscraper core" which would not only look much more beautiful but would have preserved some of the historic buildings which were knocked down.
