According to Keegan teh Italian military was NOT incompetent in WW1 - they had a very well trained professional officer corps. They were in a difficult strategic position - they attacked Austrian and later German troops in impossiple alpine terrain. They finally collapsed when they reached a massive level of casualties - but then so did the Russians and the French. They had particular problems because most of the infantry was south italians, largely illiterate and with limited national loyalty.

In WW2 the Italian army protected Jews in the Balkans, and overthrew Mussolini. Id say that beats the record of the Wehrmacht by far.

they fought wars, which was their job, as the wehrmacht did. Where they differed was in their view of the relationship of a soldier's job and honor to the implementation of genocide.

BTW - youre incorrect about the invasion of Yugo - that was a joint german-italian operation, with hungary and bulgaria in as well. Perhaps youre thinking of the invasion of Albania???

The Italians might have been more morally upright, but the discussion is who would win in a fight, and no one can say (if one assumes for some reason that perfomances in WW2 somehow can tell us what the current outcome would be) that the Italians would even slow the Germans down.

they fought whereever they could. Where there were young people who managed to get some weapons and some military training. They were not prepared to resist genocide. Perhaps because no one thought that sort of thing could happen anymore in civilized europe.
