Of the occupied South

quote: Pfff. They said it at the consitutional convention too. During the Civil War numerous bills had been introduced to re-open the African Slave trade. Slavery was the cornerstone of the Confederate state. |
As the North cut the economic engine of the south down they had to try to raise revenues wherever possible to survive. As I'm sure you were happy to overlook, you did say "re -open". In trying to dispel the truth you show evidence of what was really happening. Such is the way of yankee propoganda.
quote: Bzzt. what about the violence the white democrats inflicted on the Republicans and formerly slaves? The attacks on communities that didn't vote for ex-confederates? That was the South's doing, not the North. And whn Federal Troops left, it was the end of equality in the South. |
As you are referring to government official imposed on the population by an occupying force, I would think the answer is obvious. The communities that "didn't vote for ex-confederates" were areas where many southerners still resisting occupation were sold out to the yankee forces. Federal troops in the south destroyed any chance at equality by the way they treated the population and imposed unpopular figures on them to actually create resentment. There was a stated attitude among many in the north to teach those in the South a lesson. When the occupiers left there was a backlash of course.
Further, The attrocities that you mention from the South pale when compared to what our northern "brothers" did when they invaded. Burning cities to the ground, burning crops to the ground, raping women, summary execution all were standard yankee practice. Given the standards of warfare at the time, most informed people would agree that the South was fairly moral in the way it conducted the war.
Once again, the truth is far different than the version you have been taught.
WRT East Tennessee, I lived there for twenty years. The central cities were supportive of remaining in the Union, but the vast majority of the people were not. There was a movement to form another state ala WVa., but it gained almost no support outside of the few industrialist that wanted to remain in the Union. This is another example of northern propoganda.

Yes, I did say re-open...it was closed by the constitution.
And if money was the driving factor here, why didn't Davis and Co toss the cotton embargo out the window? When they could have used that as a way to establish credit?
after all, pissing away money taking slaves from africa isn't exactly conducive to the war effort.

So, in your mind it was an impossibility that whole counties of Arkansas along the Missouri border voted againest secession, and set up their own government, eh? Seems like you're victem to more twisting of History by the Neo-confeds.

Or they could have been areas where blacks -gasp- suddenly had the vote and voted! And whites who were of the bury-the-hatchet mentality!

As opposed to the confederate government imposing drafts and military governors, eh? The Federal government gave blacks the vote....and troops remained to make sure ex-confedes didn't slaughter blacks and white republicans.

Of course. Now they could put those n*ggers and "Black republicans" in their place. Nevermind that President Johnson manage to derail most of the radicals plans. Only reason the troops remained was for fair elections that included black representation.

Yeah? Well...Atlanta, Columbia, Charleston, and Richmond were all burned by retreating confederates....Mobile was burned because some dumbass lit up in a gunpowder room (northern fault)...and that's it.
quote:
burning crops to the ground, |
boohoo. crops grow back. I've never read of mass starvation of civilians.
no more than Southern Soldiers and "Gentlemen" with their slaves.
Yeah? Name a infamous summary execution. because, see, we know Confederate calvery rode into pro-union towns and killed people for the hell of it...we know Forrest gave orders to kill black soldiers on site, accept no surrenders.

Most informed people would say you've been brainwashed good.

I've been taught your distortions....I've also read up on the subject outside of High school history books. Try it.

Yeah? Wanna bet? In my CTM "A" school I had a Guy from the Smokey mountains area who was a true blue Mountain trash...er...person. He confimred what I read with stories his family told. You, on the other hand, sound as if you've been reading Southern HS History Texs all your life, and looking at UDC monuments. Figures.
