Celebrating percentages. Suffering from ads?

Just a quick question for the MP boys.

What's your default tax/sci/lux settings when you first start celebrating. I know people tweak them as they go along but what is your starting place.

Mine are
T 10
S 40
L 50

or
T 0
S 50
L 50

Depending on the state of my treasury.

How about you guys.

Usually they are along the same lines as Rah but if funds are very short and I will require to rush the odd temple or market to keep the growth going I may use.

T 50
S 0
L 50

50% on lux and the rest depends on whether I'm delivering cavarans and how much money and beakers I have for the turn.

There is no reason to go above 50% lux that I have noticed. It has no effect. Is that correct?

Actually that was what I was trying to feel out, the Lux tax. I was wondering if anyone used more or less than 50%

Some times, I see no difference between 50 and 40 percent... but I have NEVER seen 60% or more make any difference.

Inflate your Upload Space

I generally use 30% Luxuries and a combination of T and S depending on other factors.

I'm usually only celebrating 1-3 of my main cities to begin with and they usually have temples and trade routes so 30% will get them up to size 7. I've found that you can celebrate from 8 to 9 in republic but not to 12, unless you have HG to help although seems like that only will help to celebrate the wonder city anyways.

So I generally wait till democracy to celebrate above size 8 in most of my cities.

If I'm trying to celebrate a lot of cities rather than just my main ones I might try 50% lux. I agree that above that does not help.

Sometimes if i have a good science lead or want to get some super cities going I will set lux at 30% and T at 70%. In democ cities with a bank and courthouse can be grown infinitely at 30%. The money made with T at 70% is used to buy improvements in other cities to get them started as well.

Well it seems pretty consistent.

One more question. Does anyone set LUX above 0 when in desp or monarchy?

Oh and regarding the question, in a normal game I'll go T60/S10/L30 right after trade and usualy keep them this way.

City's without traderoutes will need temples to celebrate beyond size 5 though.

there are times when you can get an individual city or the odd year cities to celebrate with more than 50% lux....it all depends on whats in the cities, trade routes and distance from capital.

Yeah, but I hate to micromanage to that level. Besides is it worth celebrating that one city one more turn against what you lose across your entire empire with that 10% not going to science or taxes?

well often you have other cities which are smaller that won't celebrate and all the sudden will......

but your right, if its one or two cities i won't do it..but if 5+ cities will benefit, i will forgo the science for those turns that are needed

I have in my last couple of games experimented with max luxuries ( ie 80%) with 20% tax for about 5 turns, then lower as far as possible, for a lengthy period of time after that.

But this has involved synchronising city growth and improvements in about 2/3 of my cities so that at commencement all the cities have temples and generally at size 3 and also with a minumum of 4 but preferably more roaded and irrigated squares. The result is rapid rise to size 6 or 7 in all celebrating cities. The checking of attitude in all cities after every turn and placement of workers only on roaded, river or ocean squares is also necessary to justify this high luxury rate.

The luxury rate is then reduced to usually 50% initially as any less cause disorder, and after rushbuying of marketplaces and Oracle ( see other thread on Oracle) and trade routes this can be reduced over time to 20% until I am ready for the next surge.

The next surge will be after the building of aqueducts and will see most cities to size 12 including a number that did not celebrate the first time.

Where games develop in such a way that city growth and development cannot be as well coordinated then I will run a much lower luxury rate of maybe 30% over extended period of time and have sporadic growth celebrations only in 1 or 2 cities at a time.

My initial celebration is usually done very early before I have built marketplaces and before I have trade routes, so the luxury rate of 80%is necessary for cities to go to size 7, later after these are built such high rates are not necessary

Got spare money?

I try to save gold up for when you reach that city limit. It's usually not a problem. You just have to restrain yourself from rushbuilding as much. It's a trade off. But I will admit that if you haven't researched trade or have much trade it's harder, but not undoable.
