I doubt most of the food from food drives goes to families. I imagine most of it goes to homeless shelters and most of the homeless are homeless for one of two reasons. 1) Substance abuse, which makes them unemployable or 2) Mental illness, which makes them unemployable. At least that's what I saw when I used to volunteer to work at one of the local shelters when I was in college.

Nearly all of these people get welfare checks but they choice to spend them on things other then food (like drugs or liquor) so I really don't feel sorry for them. Mostly I just petty them.

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

but the point is... there are ways to make money, legit or not, and most people do got enough money to feed themselves... in case they are running short, they can get food very cheap (come on, you get a big ass loaf of bread for 99 cents standard price and that **** makes enough sandwiches for over a week... cans of vienna sausages are a 15 cents to a quarter each)... and just in case, you somehow can't afford that, there's charities, school/camp lunch programs, and welfare...

so the point is, you got to try to starve...

Speers point, Sava, is that it is really easy to feed one's self, even if all you do is panhandle... So argue that instead of spam

how can you disprove all the ways to get food cheaply that i said... might not be the healthiest food but it's still enough to ward off starvation... again...

I was eligible for this because we were poor when I was growing up. But I only took the milk because the rest of the food was sh!t, and I was fed well enough at home because my mother wasn't completely useless. This is really the crux of the issue. No one has to starve, there are plenty of ways to get food in the U.S. Food stamps will get you by if you have a kitchen, or even a hotplate and a kettle. But it takes some effort to cook a meal from scratch, and this is beyond the capabilities of some parents. Since taking children from parents who can't handle their responsibilities is such a politically charged situation, we find it easier to simply let a few children suffer from malnutrition, and a huge number from obesity. The same is true for the homeless. Some perhaps should be institutionalized, but that's expensive and the vast majority don't want to be institutionalized. So we let them freely kill themselves slowly.

This thread is unbelievable. If there aren't starving people in America, who are all of those people constantly begging in the streets? Who are those unwashed people standing outside the burger joints begging for spare change so that they can get a meal?

You apolytoners are so out of touch with reality. This thread sickens me. I'm outta here.

No one here has denied that there is poverty, merely that starvation isn't on the top 100 list of problems in the U.S. Most of the spare change beggars I see can be seen buying alchohol with their proceeds every night, or drugs in some cases. Exactly what sort of reality do you live in? Are your contrary experiences personal or second hand? Do you have any statistics to back up your opinions?

When was the last time people died of hunger in the US? You know, first you start getting really thin, looking like a walking skeleton, your sight begins to go, hair falls, somewhere around there your stomach begins to inflate, you become totally apathetic and too weak to move anyway, your bones start to break from the slightest pressure and then you die after a while of pain which is so strong you lose feeling. Seen beggars like these?

There's countless alternatives for these people to turn to, so they're not starving. There's Salvation army, church social services, soup kitchens...and that doesn't even include government help from state and federal.

There begging in the streets is more choice than anything.

Many of them are mentally ill. The Supreme Court ruled in Lessard v. Schmidt that mentally ill people who are not an imminent danger to themselves or others could no longer be instituionalized against their will. That forced thousands of people out of institutions, where they received at least some minimal level of care, onto the streets, where they received nothing. Many of these people now receive no food, no medical care, no monitoring of their condition, and in fact, until recently, there was not even a requirement in most states that they even take their medication.

all the beggers ive evr seen have been quite dirty, this is true, but most I ever see are also quite CHUBBY. Not exactly a symptom of starvation .

they usually beg for money NOT so they can get some food (they obtain this very easily, as others have said, thru soup kitchens, church programs, etc), BUT so they can get some booze or crack, which soup kitchens and churches dont readily hand out

Did you hand them a burger or did you offer to take them to McDonald's. I would go to McDonald's, but I might be suspicious of taking food from you. You might have done something to it.

although maybe they were a vegetarian. I shouldn't make assumptions about them.

Just because they are homeless, doesn't mean they don't want to eat healthy.
