Broadcaster Pat Robertson calls for retirement of justices
Tuesday, July 15, 2003 Posted: 8:56 AM EDT (1256 GMT)

VIRGINIA BEACH, Virginia (AP) -- Religious broadcaster Pat Robertson urged his nationwide audience Monday to pray for God to remove three justices from the Supreme Court so they could be replaced by conservatives.

"We ask for miracles in regard to the Supreme Court," Robertson said on the Christian Broadcasting Network's "The 700 Club."

Robertson has launched a 21-day "prayer offensive" directed at the Supreme Court in the wake of its 6-3 June vote that decriminalized sodomy. Robertson said in a letter on the CBN Web site that the ruling "has opened the door to homosexual marriage, bigamy, legalized prostitution and even incest."

The same letter targets three justices in particular: "One justice is 83-years-old, another has cancer and another has a heart condition. Would it not be possible for God to put it in the minds of these three judges that the time has come to retire?"

Judging from the descriptions, Robertson was referring to Justice John Paul Stevens, who was born in 1920, and Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who had colon cancer surgery in 1999. The identity of the third justice was unclear.

I think we here at Apolyton should launch a prayer drive of our own...to get Pat to take a laxative.

No, he's absolutely correct. You know, now that I think about it this court ruling has made me want to go out and hire my sibling as a prostitute, then rape them. And have losts of wives.

Pat Robertson Slams Bush On Liberia

(CBS) Religious broadcaster Pat Robertson accused President Bush of “undermining a Christian, Baptist president to bring in Muslim rebels” by asking Liberian President Charles Taylor, recently indicted for war crimes, to step down.

“How dare the president of the United States say to the duly elected president of another country, 'You've got to step down,'" Robertson said Monday on “The 700 Club,” broadcast from his Christian Broadcasting Network.

“It's one thing to say, we will give you money if you step down and we will give you troops if you step down, but just to order him to step down? He doesn't work for us.”

Robertson, a Bush supporter who has financial interests in Liberia, said he believes the State Department has “mismanaged the situation in nation after nation after nation” in Africa.

“So we're undermining a Christian, Baptist president to bring in Muslim rebels to take over the country,” he said in the broadcast.

Robertson told The Washington Post in an interview published Thursday that he has “written off in my own mind” an $8 million investment in a Liberian gold mining venture he made four years ago, under an agreement with Taylor's government.

“Once the dust has cleared on this thing, chances are there will be some investors from someplace who want to invest. If I could find some people to sell it to, I'd be more than delighted,” he said in the article.

He said his investment was intended to help pay for humanitarian and evangelical efforts in Liberia.

Angell Watts, a spokeswoman for Robertson, said Robertson was not available to comment Thursday because he was traveling. She also declined to comment.

Taylor waged war for seven years as a rebel leader before being elected president in 1997.

The United Nations and European leaders have sought U.S. troops to enforce a repeatedly violated June 17 cease-fire between forces loyal to Taylor and rebels fighting for three years to oust him. Under the deal, Taylor promised to step down, clearing the way for a transitional government that will oversee fresh elections.

Mr. Bush, speaking Wednesday in South Africa, promised to help enforce the cease-fire and “see to it that Mr. Taylor leaves office so there can be a peaceful transition in Liberia.”

On Sunday, Taylor accepted an offer of asylum from Nigeria, but on condition that an international force is deployed in Liberia.

A U.N.-backed tribunal indicted Taylor on June 4 for war crimes in neighboring Sierra Leone.

Robertson told the Post that the war crimes indictment “is nonsense and should be quashed.”

He said Taylor has “become such a lightning rod” that he should leave office, but in an orderly transition accompanied by the insertion of U.S. peacekeepers.

“Frankly, the president's call for Taylor to step down immediately is not wise, because if Taylor leaves immediately, the country will descend into chaos,” he told the paper.

I seem to remember you taking Sava to task for celebrating the death of Strom Thurmond, a man who perpetuated just as much hatred and intolerance in his day as Pat Robertson. Why did you consider what Sava did classless, while your behavior is perfectly fine? I guess you only consider a person worthy of death if they offend you and your minority group.

OOOH look I can use THUMBS too!

Gee, the difference is that first, the Thurmond thread was done because the man REALLY died, and despite his faults, it's hard to quibble with his being an influentual national figure. You'll note it was the active celebrating of Thurmond's death that I didn't care for.

You'll also note how others in this thread have gone so far as to wish Robertson goes to HELL. I didn't even do that (of course, I don't believe in Hell, but still). Someone said he should be struck by lightning. So go harp on them, 'cuz I can see through your schtick pretty easily.

And you'll note my disgust with Robertson didn't mention anything about my particular "minority group," and I'd also draw your attention to Thurmond's attitudes to said group, which aren't too kind, either. But since that seems to be what YOU are focused on, I just gotta wonder why you bring it up? Hetero rage?

I'd also point out that Robertson has hoped for the deaths of others in his own way, proclaiming gleefully that such-and-such people would be subjected to God's wrath (I believe he mentioned meteors?) for their evil ways. I've no doubt he be thrilled of Kennedy or O'Connor or Ginsberg croaked tomorrow, and would consider it God's answer to his prayers. Yeah, let me cry over him some. *sob*

Have to agree with Boris and GePap here. Robertson is way outa line. He does not even represent the religious conservatives in the least. The very religion he spouts his intolerence about is actually based on the concept of tolerence, choice, and understanding. none of which he has.

I don't really care if anyone says that they wish someone would die, or that they're happy that someone died. It's none of my business and there are surely folks that I would like to see dead. Personally, I didn't feel any sympathy for Thurmond and I won't feel any for Roberston when he goes.

What bothers me, however, is when folks like Boris act all high and mighty one minute, denouncing Sava with plenty of righteous indignation, and then turn around and wish death on someone they don't like in another thread. Judge not, lest ye be judged.

Homosexuality does not equal bigamy, prostitution or incest. Gay people should be treated as straights are. I don't see why it is so hard for Pat to understand this.

Yeah, I'm the same as Robertson, because I'd rather he died than Mr. Rogers. You don't do comparisons very well, do you?

Robertson preaches hatred towards entire groups of people and incites religious intolerance and bigotry. He also uses a nationwide bully pulpit to do it. Gee, wee bit of a difference there?

Hey, here's some other choice quotes from your buddy Robertson:

"You say you're supposed to be nice to the Episcopalians and the Presbyterians and the Methodists and this, that, and the other thing. Nonsense, I don't have to be nice to the spirit of the Antichrist. I can love the people who hold false opinions but I don't have to be nice to them."
--The 700 Club, January 14, 1991

"Individual Christians are the only ones really---and Jewish people, those who trust God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob--are the only ones that are qualified to have the reign, because hopefully, they will be governed by God and submit to Him."
--Defending his stance that only Christians and Jews are fit to hold public office, The 700 Club, January 11, 1985

"It is interesting, that termites don't build things, and the great builders of our nation almost to a man have been Christians, because Christians have the desire to build something. He is motivated by love of man and God, so he builds. The people who have come into [our] institutions are primarily termites. They are into destroying institutions that have been built by Christians, whether it is universities, governments, our own traditions, that we have.... The termites are in charge now, and that is not the way it ought to be, and the time has arrived for a godly fumigation."
--New York Magazine, August 18, 1986

[Gee, wouldn't fumigating termites be killing them?]

"[Homosexuals] want to come into churches and disrupt church services and throw blood all around and try to give people AIDS and spit in the face of ministers."
--The 700 Club, January 18, 1995

"If the widespread practice of homosexuality will bring about the destruction of your nation, if it will bring about terrorist bombs, if it'll bring about earthquakes, tornadoes and possibly a meteor, it isn't necessarily something we ought to open our arms to."
--The 700 Club, June 8, 1998

"Many of those people involved with Adolf Hitler were Satanists, many of them were homosexuals - the two things seem to go together."
--The 700 Club, January 21, 1993

"I know this is painful for the ladies to hear, but if you get married, you have accepted the headship of a man, your husband. Christ is the head of the household and the husband is the head of the wife, and that's the way it is, period."
--The 700 Club, January 8, 1992

"The feminist agenda is not about equal rights for women. It is about a socialist, anti-family political movement that encourages women to leave their husbands, kill their children, practice witchcraft, destroy capitalism, and become lesbians."
--Fundraising letter, 1992

"The wars of extermination have given a lot of people trouble unless they know what was going on. The people in the land of Palestine were very wicked. They were given over to idolatry; they sacrificed their children; they had all kinds of abominable sex practices; they were having sex, apparently, with animals; they were having sex men with men, and women with women; they were committing adultery, fornication; they were worshipping idols, offering their children up; and they were forsaking God.
"God told the Israelites to kill them all -- men, women and children, to destroy them. And that seems to be a terrible thing to do. Is it? Or isn't it?"
"Well, let us assume there were 2,000 of them, or 10,000 of them living in the land, or whatever number there was of them. I don't have the exact number. Pick a number. God said, 'Kill them all.'
"Well, that would seem hard, wouldn't it? That would be 10,000 people who would probably go to Hell. But, if they stayed and reproduced, in 30 or 40 or 50 or 60 or 100 more years, they could conceivably be -- 10,000 would go to a 100,000 -- 100,000 could conceivably go to a million. And then, there would be a million people who would have to spend eternity in Hell! And it's far more merciful to take away a few than to see in the future a 100 years down the road, and say, 'Well, I have to take away a million people that would forever be apart from God, ' because the abomination was there like a contagion. God saw that there was no cure for it. It wasn't going to change; their hearts weren't going to change; and all they would do is cause trouble for the Israelites, and pull the Israelites away from God, and prevent the truth of God from reaching the Earth."
"So, God, in love, took away a small number that he might not have to take away a large number."
--The 700 Club, May 6, 1985

What do we learn from all this?

-Non-Baptist Christians follow the spirit of Satan.
-Only Christians and Jews should be allowed to hold office, despite the Constitution.
-Anyone who opposes him is a termite in need of fumigating
-Gays are Nazi Satanists who will come into churches and throw around AIDS-infected blood, so we hope God sends a meteor to crush them.
-Any woman who doesn't take a subserviant role to her husband is a lesbian communist witch child-killer
-It is perfectly fine to kill thousands of innocent women and children, because they might give birth to future generations of national enemies. Mind you, this same man opposes abortion.

So, Robertson uses his renown to propogate such hate. All I say is that I think the world will be better off when he's gone. Yeah, that's comparable.

Oh Drake, if you weren't so absurd, I'd think you were seriously deranged.
