What are you smoking? The SEC and Big 12 alternate in the top conference spot every couple years. The Big 12 was the best conference in the country two years ago. Now the SEC is probably better again, top to bottom. With all the good, young teams in the Big 12, however, it could be back in the top spot soon.

Oh yeah, real boring conference. Its a shame none of the Big12 members other that OU or Nebraska ever make it to the Big 12 championship. Wonder what would happen if Texas ever won a national championship..........

oh wait, they have.

I follow college football, and have since 1970. The Big Twelve is an improvement on the Big 8, but it still tends to have a couple of teams slaughtering opponents on their way to the showdown game. The addition of Texas in the southern conference and the emergence of occasional forays from Colorada and Kansas State have improved the conference immensely, but it still doesn't provide the sort of games I'm interested in watching on a regular basis. I should know, I live in Boulder and have to watch a lot more Big 12 football than I'd like, simply because it's our local conference. At least it isn't just wishbone offense anymore.

Despite all the wonderful high ranking matchups between the often overrated Big 12 teams, a lot of these games plainly suck. Exhibit A is the meeting between a highly overrated Texas last week against Oklahoma. Only a Sooner fan could love a game like that, and many of them probably turned the channel at some point to watch a game where the issue was in doubt after the 1st quarter.

Well, the defense did, at least. Can't say I blame them; that fourth quarter against Missouri was an uncharacteristic meltdown that will probably haunt them for the rest of the season. Must hurt to have your whole season ruined because you forget to play for four quarters.

My selection of games on local TV was interesting, but not interesting enough. Firstly, we got to see the biting Illini for the second week in a row getting blown out by a team from Michigan. Apparantly they don't get the rights to any of the good matchups on channel 53. Snooze.

Next up was an overmatched Notre Dame against USC. They kept it sort of interesting for a quarter in that the score was close for that long. Snooze.

Next up were two games. Arkansas (rated 11!) managed to get blown out by Florida because their offense is pathetic. They made the game close score wise at the end, but it wasn't nearly as close as the final score indicated. In the other game Texas Tech and Oklahoma State played basketball, or at least that's what it looked like to me. There was no defense at all, OSU scored on their first 8 possessions! OSU seemed in command, but Tech managed to get within a score late in the game before they tossed away their last chance with an interception. I guess their QB just got tired, he threw 67 passes today!

It was pretty disappointing really. The Big Twelve game was probably the best game in the conference as far as it being a fairly close game, albeit a complete slaughter for both defenses. The Big Ten game we got was crap, perhaps the least competitive game this week in the conference. The SEC game was ok, though I wonder why people thought so highly of Arkansas. They didn't do squat on offense until half way through the 4th quarter, and it was too little too late. I wish Notre Dame was better. They are televised most weeks, but they suck. I normally like watching them because as an independent they are a good measuring stick for the relative power of the different conferences, but it isn't nearly as instructive to try to measure the variation between one blowout and another. USC looked strong on both sides of the ball. They only looked vulnerable to ND's running game, and that mostly in the 1st quarter. Who saw a great game this week?

Look at Symons' (the Texas Tech's QB) season numbers. I can imagine he may be getting just a biiiit tired .

What, does he have 30 TDs in 6 games (and I'm not even exaggerating)?

quote:

They were much better earlier in the season. They had some very, very good early games, especially in beating Texas. The last two weeks (Auburn and Florida) they have looked bad.

However, in their defense, Auburn and Florida are two of the hottest teams in college football (especially Auburn, after being TOTALLY unprepared the first two games of the season).

quote:

Well, the Purdue/Wisconsin game I got on ESPN was pretty damned good. Orton, Purdue's QB, was amazing and drove them down to the last second FG, after Wisconsin tied the game late with an amazing punt return.

And OSU/Iowa wasn't that bad of a game, neither was FSU/Virginia.

Make that 7 games for Symons... and 32 TDs . In addition, 3506 yards passing on the season... that arm hasn't fallen off yet?
