We finally have contact with the final civ in the game (for those who don't know, both Grenouille and Firaxis are out of the game). Contact was made with a CGN galley after our own survived its second turn at sea.
As usual, our first contact shall be a polite greeting and a suggestion of an initial technology trade. In the chat the idea was floated around of suggesting a Republic for map trade. Since they lack Republic they may be inclined to get it from us.
Our long-term interests with CGN are at the moment unclear. It is unknown if CGN and GWT are close friends, or looking at each other as potential enemies. Considering that GWT's UU is coming near, it is quite possible that CGN is looking at that with suspicion. However, like GWT, CGN is "weak compared to us according to the F3 screen, which probably means their war aginst Grenouille was of limited scope (goes to show how weak Grenouille and Firaxis really were).
GWT would be fools to let CGN survive until Military Tradition, where CGN's Sipahi's would most likely rip any potential opponents to shreds. GWT's best move (suggested by E_T) therefore would be to wait before MT before they launch a massive Ansar assault on their neighbor, this delay would allow perhaps a false sense of security from CGN as well as big opportunities for tech trade with us also. Once a war between them starts, it is unlikely that the winner will be diplomatically active with regards to us and CFC and that is our opportunity to outpace them in research. However, due to the fact that CGN's GA comes much later, it is perhaps in our interests that GWT win a sooner conflict so as to leave them more isolated for a longer time.
In short, the thing is that Apolyton must not stand with its arms crossed on whatever conflict may arise on the other continent. Moreso we must watch the signs of a potential alliance between them. We must not allow any one of the two to become masters of their continent, and if such a thing occurs before we are able to respond, we must isolate them and hope for tech supremacy between CFC and us. Diplomacy with CGN therefore will be one of the most interesting challanges to face us yet.

Whatever friendship they had is going to be disappear once they realize that destroying the other is the key to their own victory.
Are there any doubts that these two will butt heads sometime before the Industrial age?
It's not like we can do anything about it right now (we've got our own worries), but it's important to keep in mind that they will fight. We have to figure out how we're going to make sure no team gets the upper hand.
A World Map would be very welcome here. Not "at any price", but close. It's the one thing that will give us perspective on the game beyond GCA.

First draft. Togas - please let me know if you have any edits. If not, I'm sending this sucker off asap.
quote:
Greetings from Apolyton,
We were pleasantly surprised this turn to learn that our ocean-crossing expedition sighted a Netatolian naval vessel, giving us contact with your great nation. Our expedition crossed the ocean between our lands explicitly in the hope of contacting Netatolia, so we were pleasantly surprised to learn of our good fortune in how quickly and easily this was accomplished. We believe that our nations have much to be gained through contact with one another and would like to pursue a peaceful and mutually-beneficial relationship with your nation.
Along those lines, we believe a prudent first step would be the signing of a non-aggression treaty between our peoples for a set length of time, after which we can re-negotiate or extend the treaty with the agreement of both parties. We have also noticed that we are able to sell you Republic and would be willing to do so for either your world map or another agreeable price.
In terms of other agreements potentially of mutual benefit, we would be interested in cooperating in technological research with the Netatolian people and trading additional technology in the future. We would also be quite interested in exchanging information with you about your neighbors for information about our neighbors, including both ancient and recent history.
To discuss these issues or any others you wish to discuss, you can contact myself (arnelos@aol.com), Togas (tom_ogas@yahoo.com), or Master Zen (raguil@masterzen.net) by e-mail or you can meet any of us from the Apolyton Foreign Affairs Ministry in our channel on Apolyton.net, #isdgfamtalks (port 6667, no password for the channel). Also, as the Ambassador to Netatolia, I would be more than willing to meet you in chat when I am available.
We hope for a prosperous relationship between our nations and would like to hear your response on the issues we have raised above, along with any others you would wish to raise yourselves.
Arnelos
Apolytonian Ambassador to Netatolia

I've talked a bit with miccofl this morning since Togas told me to get ahold of him if I could. So I did.
Things of interest:
The main topic was holding a chat later today, which should go fine. Miccofl said he would email me later with more details, and he should be on the CGN IRC server all day. He said it would be best for his team to have the chat around 6-7pm EDT.
He plans on setting up a private "embassy" thread at the CGN forum, where selected members at the forum will be able to view it. So far I think he said he was going to make it so that NYE, BF, FrustratedPoet and I would have access. If there's anyone else who has an account there also they should let him know.
We briefly discussed other matters besides the chat and other forms of contacting each other. He said he would be willing to do a world map swap though he would of course have to poll it with his team first. Also he expressed that he was interested in doing tech trades now and in the future.
I mentioned how GWT was taking a long time with the save, and he said that they "are beginning to really tick us off." I asked if they were at war and he said "not at this time."
There doesn't seem to be any hard feelings from the scuffles at the 1BC forum, and they don't seem to have anything legitimate against us. Things seem to be very coridal right now and they will probably be a lot easier to get along with than GWT, if only because we're able to talk with them.
So there will be a chat later today sometime this afternoon/early evening. I will post more if/when he contacts me later.
Edit: Miccofl just told me that he would support a "history trade" but like with the other things they would need to have a poll first. I think a history trade would be a good idea, just to get a better perspective on things. Plus, we can start establishing a very good relationship with CGN.

GUIDELINES FOR CHATTING WITH CGN
I have a feeling we will have a more chat-friendly relationship with CGN since they have a permanent room set up for us, so I would just like to point out some things we should all stick to:
1) No revealing of sensitive information By sensitive I mean # of cities, troops stuff like that. This one should be more than obvious.
2) No revealing of our intelligence gathering methods. Seriously we put the CIA and KGB to shame with our Area X stuff. No need for anyone to know how good we are at getting info. That means no comments like "Yeah, we saw how Firaxis' score just skyrocketed so I guess they outREXed themselves to death". Or "Yeah, GWT's capital dropped that means they built a settler 3 turns ago".
3) No lurking around needlessly in Miccofl's page They accuse a guy from Grenouille of cheating by catching him browsing sensitive stuff. Remember, the owner of every site can get a log of people that are in it wouldn't be difficult to catch.
for the moment that's all I can think of. So far we have gone of to a good start with them.
