I hate the term "African American."
Firstly, it is factually incorrect. It was coined to describe black people. However, it uses continent of origin to describe race. If you went to South Africa, would you say that the country has some white people and some African Americans? Clearly not, because many of them have never been to America, and certainly aren't American. So would you say that the country has some white people and some Africans? No, because the white people are African as well. And what about a black person who immigrated from the Caribbean? Would he be African American?
Secondly, it is a seven syllable description when one syllable could suffice.
Thirdly, it reeks of political correctness.
Lastly, using it implies that the adjective "black" is offensive and must be replaced by the tamer "African-American." Nobody ever hesitates to say someone is white. Why is the word "black" any different?

The term 'african american' is rather amusing considering the vast majority of the people it refers to have never been to africa, know nothing of the history of africa, and would never want to live in africa.

No. Perhaps you didn't read it very carefully. I don't see any repetition.

African American is outdated, but still somewhat accurate. We use African in the sense of the particular ethnicity of those Africans below the Saharra Desert and American in the sense that they're in America.
While I'm sure some people who ascribe to be African Americans maybe are not, I would say most people who we typically pinned as AA are.
Fact is, race doesn't exist anyways, and the human gene pool is so diverse, even in isolated areas, that genes from everywhere are in all of us to at least some degree, so where do we draw the line? All we have to go in physical appearance...
