Reposted this here. It's a letter from PAL to CDG. I figure we're going to hear from CDG soon about it:
quote:
Respected neighbor CDG:
Our intention was never to unnerve or upset you with our warriors, but merely to watch. In our community, this action would not have been taken in a hostile manner, and we apologize if that sentiment was unintentionally transmitted.
Unfortunately, we are not sure that the same can be said for your most recent action. You have for several turns clearly seen the development of our infrastructure towards the ivory, and clearly seen the progress of our units to acquiring it. You have now - without negotiation or comment - stepped into the way of said infrastructure in a manner which is both clear, considered, and callous. This is not the action of a friendly nation.
We were, prior to the receipt of the turnsave, ready to withdraw our warriors with sincere apologies for any offense we might have committed unintentionally. Our troops are numerous enough that we cannot and do not carefully ponder each movement on any given turn, and some of those which appear inconsequential are ignored. Now, unfortunately, they must remain, as we are no longer certain of the goodwill of our southern neighbors. At such time that your warrior no longer impedes our development, our unintended blockade (which would not have been blocking yours had you chosen any other course of action, as we would have happily moved for you to pass) must remain.
We would like to point out that we were, in complete honesty, about to contact you about a road between our nations, for an exchange of luxuries... but your actions have actually blocked that road's progress, both physically, and diplomatically.
We now await YOUR response, and corrective action, so that we may reconsider a much more harmonious and peaceful future together. If your intent is to remedy this situation satisfactorily, we urge you to move Jarl Brent to the west. If your intent is to worsen the situation, we will regretfully note Jarl remaining in his current location, or in any way interdicting our further just efforts, as a hostile act, whose intentions for your people cannot be considered by just and reasonable men.

Apparently, CDG blocked PAL's road-building workers and PAL has blocked CDG's spear/settler stack. CDG may soon come to us for help or to reassure themselves that Apolyton is on their side. I think we should act surprised when they come to us, let them tell us their side, and tell them we'll start up a new thread to discuss what to do about it internally.

trading to aquire Map Making. I believe your response was luke warm
(Apolyton had some interest, but not pressing need to aquire Map
Making).
What would Apolyton's current interest in aquiring this technology? In
the past, CDG has expressed an interest in Masonry and Mathmatics, and
I was wondering if a deal could be worked out having to do with these
techs.
I hope to recieve a response soon, and I hope we can rebuild a tech
trading relationship, like our agreement from long ago.
Sincerely,
Your Friends and Allies

Interesting. I'm thinking we can reap one last profit in the form of gold from CDG. Since we obviously don't need to buy MM from them, we could just ask them if they're willing to by masonry and math for gold.
Then again, I don't know if we want them to have math and masonry (cats and walls).
I'm ok with taking that risk, since, with any luck, CDG will be broke enough to not be able to afford cats and walls. Thoughts?

Yeah, why do they think we are allies? only because we didn't destroy them at beginning and cooperated with them to research the republic?

Agreed re: Masonry.
I just sent this to CDG:
quote:
Esteemed citizens of the Creative Design Group,
hello, I'm MrWhereItsAt, one of the Triumvirate of Consuls responsible for the management of Apolyton. First off I apologise that our foreign affairs have been so scrappy - our Ambassador has continued to have difficulties with his computer and activity, and as a Consul the job falls to me (and the other two) to follow through.
Thanks for your offer to trade MapMaking - we are certainly interested in trading for this, but in order to get as much out of things as possible, we'd like a few more turns to get another Curragh or two ready for upgrading before trading for MapMaking, rather than having to construct a Galley from scratch. I will certainly keep you posted on this.
Also, we are getting towards hooking up a second set of wines that would be available for exchange (perhaps with your spare furs). If you have been holding off on revolting to a Republic because of happiness worries, we are certainly open to negotiations for the wines we will be connecting up. A road connection would be needed for this trade (or two harbours, I suppose, but a road could be easiest depending on your worker circumstances - and ours), so if you are interested please let us know, and we can, I am sure help each other into a far more productive government.
From your friendly neighbourhood Apolyton.
MrWIA.

This covers the MM trade as well as prodding them towards Anarchy a bit, and we may even be able to tell them where we want a road connecting us to them!
