Tired of ads?

Reposted this here. It's a letter from PAL to CDG. I figure we're going to hear from CDG soon about it:

quote:

Respected neighbor CDG:

Our intention was never to unnerve or upset you with our warriors, but merely to watch. In our community, this action would not have been taken in a hostile manner, and we apologize if that sentiment was unintentionally transmitted.

Unfortunately, we are not sure that the same can be said for your most recent action. You have for several turns clearly seen the development of our infrastructure towards the ivory, and clearly seen the progress of our units to acquiring it. You have now - without negotiation or comment - stepped into the way of said infrastructure in a manner which is both clear, considered, and callous. This is not the action of a friendly nation.

We were, prior to the receipt of the turnsave, ready to withdraw our warriors with sincere apologies for any offense we might have committed unintentionally. Our troops are numerous enough that we cannot and do not carefully ponder each movement on any given turn, and some of those which appear inconsequential are ignored. Now, unfortunately, they must remain, as we are no longer certain of the goodwill of our southern neighbors. At such time that your warrior no longer impedes our development, our unintended blockade (which would not have been blocking yours had you chosen any other course of action, as we would have happily moved for you to pass) must remain.

We would like to point out that we were, in complete honesty, about to contact you about a road between our nations, for an exchange of luxuries... but your actions have actually blocked that road's progress, both physically, and diplomatically.

We now await YOUR response, and corrective action, so that we may reconsider a much more harmonious and peaceful future together. If your intent is to remedy this situation satisfactorily, we urge you to move Jarl Brent to the west. If your intent is to worsen the situation, we will regretfully note Jarl remaining in his current location, or in any way interdicting our further just efforts, as a hostile act, whose intentions for your people cannot be considered by just and reasonable men.

The People's Army of the Ladder

Apparently, CDG blocked PAL's road-building workers and PAL has blocked CDG's spear/settler stack. CDG may soon come to us for help or to reassure themselves that Apolyton is on their side. I think we should act surprised when they come to us, let them tell us their side, and tell them we'll start up a new thread to discuss what to do about it internally.

Reviewed the chat that OctX had with Louis. Well done.

I think we should definately work out a trade with them for after Mapmaking ... if they will be getting MM not too soon. If they are getting it soon, we should try to trade for a different tech (suggest Polytheism, a tech that PAL now has), and tell them that we first want to build several curraghs and later upgrade them. Buying MM now would make curragh building impossible.

We should encourage them to build north.

We should let them know about us being warry of PAL and their road, and that we have several units watching PAL. Keep their suspicions on PAL, not us, so that they will keep their southern flank undefended.

As for them finding other civs, we shouldn't encourage that. We don't need them to find an ally overseas, someone they can inform about our trechery and our alliance with PAL. We also don't want another civ to give them a "liferaft" like GCA got in the first game. Killing them before they escape is critical.

I concur.

Something to think about, they said they were going to try there luck with a curragh. That maybe happening sooner then we want. We may have to accelerate the timetable if possible. It may be worth the risk to make sure they can not get that "Life Raft"

Well, how long until this raft goes out? Five turns? Remember, they have to build it get across, dedicate a unit to it, and then search for a civ if one isn't on the coast. And that's assuming they don't sink.

[ 18:38:18 ] [ Louis_XXIV ] Let me just start off by saying that we have been researching Map Making for a while
[ 18:39:18 ] [ @Octavian_X ] IIRC, we're working on currency at the moment.
[ 18:39:44 ] [ Louis_XXIV ] Its good to here we're not researching the same thing
[ 18:39:52 ] [ Louis_XXIV ] Do you have any interest in aquiring MM?
[ 18:40:58 ] [ @Octavian_X ] There's some interest floating around the team, but it isn't much since our only use for galleys would be a continental crossing (and we haven't see a good spot for that, either)
[ 18:41:24 ] [ @Octavian_X ] meaning, from our continent to the one with the other two teams.
[ 18:41:45 ] [ Louis_XXIV ] I'm going to try a Curragh cross soon (on the Eastern side) and see if my seafaring trait gives us any luck

Last time we talked, I had wondered if Apolyton had any interest in
trading to aquire Map Making. I believe your response was luke warm
(Apolyton had some interest, but not pressing need to aquire Map
Making).

What would Apolyton's current interest in aquiring this technology? In
the past, CDG has expressed an interest in Masonry and Mathmatics, and
I was wondering if a deal could be worked out having to do with these
techs.

I hope to recieve a response soon, and I hope we can rebuild a tech
trading relationship, like our agreement from long ago.

Sincerely,

Interesting. I'm thinking we can reap one last profit in the form of gold from CDG. Since we obviously don't need to buy MM from them, we could just ask them if they're willing to by masonry and math for gold.

Then again, I don't know if we want them to have math and masonry (cats and walls).

I'm ok with taking that risk, since, with any luck, CDG will be broke enough to not be able to afford cats and walls. Thoughts?

I think we should tell them that we will trade them Masonry and Math for Mapmaking....

HOWEVER ... we want to build a few curraghs first and then upgrade them to galleys, so we want to wait a bit before making the trade.

Find out what they're working on now and how soon they'll need math. Let them know we're working on Currency already, so they won't need to do that, and that we'll trade the Currency for something down the road.

Do we really want to give them Masonry? That allows them to build city walls.

Granted they aren't an industrial powerhouse by any stretch of the imagination but popping city walls with pop points is not that tough to do.

Its something to think about.

Unless you are planning on that being the deal and we do not see it thru. Tell them we want to wait for map making so we can build a few curraghs to delay the deal.

The downside to that is they could ask for the techs early, like they did with Pottery and we obliged them.

Dont forget we can get map making from PAL just by asking. We asked them to delay giving it to us so we could build curraghs...............

Unless we are never going to execute this deal, Im not real crazy about it. Giving CDG a tech that allows city walls is going to make us look kind of silly in PAL's view, especially when we trade a tech for it that PAL is going to give us anyway......

I say tell them thats the deal we are willing to agree to but we want to hold off for about 15 turns to give us a chance to build some curraghs first. Then just dont carry out the deal.

Agreed re: Masonry.

I just sent this to CDG:

quote:

Esteemed citizens of the Creative Design Group,

hello, I'm MrWhereItsAt, one of the Triumvirate of Consuls responsible for the management of Apolyton. First off I apologise that our foreign affairs have been so scrappy - our Ambassador has continued to have difficulties with his computer and activity, and as a Consul the job falls to me (and the other two) to follow through.

Thanks for your offer to trade MapMaking - we are certainly interested in trading for this, but in order to get as much out of things as possible, we'd like a few more turns to get another Curragh or two ready for upgrading before trading for MapMaking, rather than having to construct a Galley from scratch. I will certainly keep you posted on this.

Also, we are getting towards hooking up a second set of wines that would be available for exchange (perhaps with your spare furs). If you have been holding off on revolting to a Republic because of happiness worries, we are certainly open to negotiations for the wines we will be connecting up. A road connection would be needed for this trade (or two harbours, I suppose, but a road could be easiest depending on your worker circumstances - and ours), so if you are interested please let us know, and we can, I am sure help each other into a far more productive government.

From your friendly neighbourhood Apolyton.

MrWIA.

This covers the MM trade as well as prodding them towards Anarchy a bit, and we may even be able to tell them where we want a road connecting us to them!

None of that seems like a problem, I'll have to double check with my

work for any trades.
