Hum, wasn't Waffen SS the war-fighting part of the organisation? As opposed to killing defenceles civilians part? Propably some of the latter too, well, the Totenkompfs deffinately.

Par example, the Finns fighting in Waffen-SS weren't there for political reasons (well, some were, propably), but to fight against the Soviet Union.

If the sovs got wind that there was a nonzero probability of US actually NOT responding to a major nuking, they would have been more willing to take their chances.

Credibility of deterrence matters, and no one even discussed the possibility of NOT responding, as that could have been interpreted by the other side as becoming part of policy.

I look at propaganda from different time periods with interest, not acceptance. It is interesting to see how evil men captured the attention of an entire nation. I think it is in my right to have it as an avatar.

I'm looking this over now.

First of all the talk about the initial radiation burst will be absorbed by the atmosphere. That looks incorrect. While alpha and beta radiation is easily absorbed. Neutron and Gamma radiation from exploding nuclear weapons is a serious concern for people in the vicinity.

"The average radiation dose in Texas is about 500 rem; by comparison, a dose of 100 rem in less than a week causes radiation sickness in half of people exposed; 50% of people exposed to 450 rem in a short period will die within 30 days; and a dose of 1,500 rem will kill nearly all people exposed within 10 days."

That above statement looks correct. That looks similar to what I've learned about radiation. By comparison, the time I spent on nuclear ships I was explosed to about 650 millirem over a period of about 5 or 6 years. This does not include neutron radiation, as our TLD's do not measure neutron radiaton. But neutron radiation is not a serious concern for us as we remained outside the reactor compartment during operation. The shielding cut much of that out.

This thing is too Texas centric. And evertying is Central Daylight Time. Texas is not the center of the universe dammit!

Anyway to the article:
It talks about the soviets having nuclear weapons in orbit above the US, I don't think that they have any up there.

Plus it assumes a 10% failure rate for both sides, this is not accurate as the US maintains its weapons and the soviets did not. plus their guidance stuff isn't any where near as good as ours is.

He's using the official numbers for Soviet military power from the US and the Soviets, both were wildly overinflated for differing reasons.

He Finally assumes a launch on confirmed posture/military targeting primarily for the US. I'm not sure if Reagan switched us away from launch on warning/target civilians primarily or not, I've heard stuff to that effect.
