The April's joke was a day early this year. And it was played by a company called Firaxis and we the customers who purchased Conquests were the fooled.
The testers (if any) are clearly the fools.
If anyone doubts me, try it yourself. One of the most basic functions "LOAD GAME" doesn't work at all in MP mode. It fails the same way every time. We confirmed this in a dozen tests or more yesterday.
We were forced to uninstall Conquests and revert back to the 1.15 patch.
I believe the community deserves an apology and response and fast resolution to this issue.
Sincerely,
SirPartyMan

I can't speak to the bugs in the Single Player version of the game. I haven't tested SP Mode with patch 1.20, though I've read of errors such as starting with Radio in 4000BC.
The serious bug we found involved Multiplayer mode.

That is correct. You can re-retrieve the 1.15 beta patch from the Atari web site, ftp://ftp.infogrames.net/patches/ci...stsFULLBetav115
If you've installed 1.20 over 1.15, you'll notice that 1.20 doesn't have a proper uninstall. The first time I ran the 1.15 patch it uninstalled and then I ran it again and it re-installed 1.15. All save games from 1.15 worked just fine. Any games started in 1.20 obviously can not be loaded with 1.15

Things I see wrong with the patch.
First, MPTournament.biq refers to 1.18 patch.
Also it still has a Radio tech implemented.
This is also true for all other BIQ files added with Conquests.
Like Cheaper Upgrades.biq, MPFastCiv3Conquests.biq, No Civ Traits.biq, No Unique Units.biq, Quick Civ.biq, With Plague.biq, etc... They all need to be changed to reflect the newest rules.
Second, even conquests.biq is not done properly.
It still has Radio tech in its list, but as non-era tech which is added to all civs at start.
Should be deleted, since it gives some bugs, like starting game with Radio or Radio in Civilopedia.
Third, Civilopeida.txt isn't changed to reflect that Radio tech is removed. Which means that "Enables Radar Towers" entry needs to be moved from Radio to Electronics.
Fourth, as alexman reported, it looks that Civ3Conquests.exe looks for science_industrial_new.pcx for industrial era, which gives error in all scenarios. It should look to science_industrial.pcx instead, and science_industrial_new.pcx needs to replace science_industrial.pcx
Fifth: These are very serious bugs.
Optional: When we are there, maybe some other easy things could be fixed.
-Like adding WWII Paratrooper in list of units with ZOC in Civilopedia
-removing offense AI flag from Musketeer (PtW leftover, when it had attack of 3)
-fixing bug with Inca leader being targetable by Stl. Fighter stealth attack (this maybe is not bug since stealth attack doesn't work for air units anyway)
-and if any conquests.biq changes are done, then adding them to other optional BIQs should be done too

Has anyone heard anything from Firaxis on this? If not I'm not really surprised, I would be very embarassed if I were them... They're probably scared to show their face.

An update will be posted soon. Please don't deceive yourselves by thinking that we are incapable of making mistakes. We are working hard to resolve the problems found with v1.20
Thanks,
Jesse

about how the screen remains black in pbem when loading your turn, has anyone else noticed how it remains black only until all the builds are done and new build orders are issues? so even if you have to zoom into a city to adjust a build queue, the entire map still remains black, even the city view
here's what it looks like:
http://www.inethighway.com/sm/blackmap.jpg
i can cycle through all cities, all black. maybe the screen should get unblackened after the password is entered and when the game first refocuses on the players map area, instead of waiting

Firaxis is still too busy with Civ 4 to give Civ 3 the effort needed to make it a good game instead of a mediocre one as it is now.
After Civ 4 is out, will they give the same speech about how they are devoting most of their time to Civ 5 instead of fixing the bugs/imbalances in Civ 4? If it's about money, and rest assured it is, we will hear the very same speech all the way to Civ 23 Platinum edition!
I'm starting to think that "testing" a game before actually purchasing it is a good idea for most consumers. Too bad the developers don't see the direction they are pushing their cart in. |
What are you talking about? Civ3 was only mediocre before the 1.29f patch. After that it became a good game, and now with C3C and 1.15b or greater patch it's a great game.
I believe their take on civ5 will be significantly different, however, as I believe they stated that civ5 will be the first civ since civ1 to have 100% of its code written from scratch (civ2 and 3 are actually full of legacy code).
I agree, however, that testing before release should be more thoroughly done. I got civ3 after it was patched a bit, but I've heard that it was rather rotten out of the box.
