Discussion on the Goblet of Fire, Severus Snape Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

By avoiding putting "Harry Potter" in the title, I hope that I have dealt with the majority of the idiots who haven't read the books and spam the threads all the time.

There's something that's been bothering me for quite some time now. I'm sure we all remember this quote from Goblet of Fire:

quote:
And here we have six missing Death Eaters... three dead in my service. One too cowardly to return... he will pay. One, who I believe has left me forever... he will be killed, of course... and one, who remains my most faithful servant, and who has already re-entered my service.

The one too cowardly to return is Karkaroff, and the one who remains the most loyal servant was Barty Crouch Jr. This is quite obvious. I also assumed that the one Voldemort believes has left him forever is Snape.

Next, we must look at this one:
quote:
"Severus," said Dumbledore, turning to Snape, "you know what I must ask you to do. If you are ready...if you are prepared..."
"I am," said Snape. He looked paler than usual and his cold, black eyes glittered strangely.
"Then good luck," said Dumbledore, and he watched, with a trace of apprehension on his face, as Snape swept wordlessly after Sirius.

I assumed, as all of you probably did, that Snape is going back to Voldemort to work as a double agent for Dumbledore.

However, isn't there an incongruity here? If Voldemort believes Snape has left him forever, then how could Snape possibly work as a double agent? One of these assumptions that we make from these two quotes is wrong. Either Dumbledore is asking something else of Snape (I doubt this, because the quote definitely makes it look like whatever Snape is doing is no cup of tea) or, it's possible that the one who left forever is somebody else.

If the one that left forever is not Snape, then who is it?

Who's Barty Crouch, Jr.?

And where does Peter Petigrew (Scabbers) fit into all of those? He did after all perform one of the greatest double agent jobs for Voldemort.

I am going to have to reread Goblet of Fire, but I doubt it will help at all. J.K. has quite a talent for throwing curve balls at her readers, and we won't know for certain until the book is released.

That being said, as the quote says, Voldemort only believes one to have left him forever, leaving room for Snape to "come back".

He was the guy who disguised as Mad-Eye Moody and set up the whole thing where Harry and Cedric get teleported out to Voldemort. That's why Voldemort says he has already entered his service.

Peter Pettigrew isn't exactly a double agent. He was OK, but then he betrayed his friends because he was weak. Then there were roughly thirteen years of him pretending to be dead, and after that, he was obviously on the side of evil.

Remember that Severus Snape is known for being an excellent occlumence. If that's the right spelling. That's probably how he was able to rejoin the death eaters - and also remember, all this time Draco was probably telling his dad how much Severus hated Potter, so Lucius would probably be pretty convinced that Snape was still on their side.

It seems like the most likely answer, and the one that Rowling would do.

Also, we're all in accordance that Ron and Hermione are going to end up together, right?

Of course. The movies hve made that exceptionally clear. In the books it wasn't apparent until the Goblet of Fire, but the movies began making it obvious by the second one.

"Can anyone give me anymore info on Peter Pettigrew?"

What do you want to know?

The moment in Cuaron's Prisoner of Azkaban where Ron and Hermione touch eachother's hands, and then act all nonchalant/emberassed about it afterwards is great...

Personally, if Harry develops a romantic relationship with anyone, I'm betting that it'll be Luna. No other student makes sense to me.

He was a sort of tagalong with James Potter, Sirius Black and Lupin back during their Hogwarts days. He was the one who knew the location of the Potters, and gave the information to Voldemort(who would not have been able to get to them w/o this help from Peter).

Sirius tracked him down because of this betrayal, Peter made it seem as if Sirius had blown up the entire area during their showdown before he transformed into a rat, aka Scabbers.

Indeed, that was one of the best moments of PoA. (Gah, I'm a Halo fan too, so those letters also mean Pillar of Autumn to me. Quite confusing!)

I wasn't as wild about Luna as everyone else seems to be. She was a fun character, but not that great. I think Harry and Ginny is still a little more likely.

Would you like me to spoil book 4 four you then? Very well -

spoiler(highlight to read):
Book 4 opens with Peter Pettigrew assisting Voldemort in a house that they have requisitoned for their own dark purposes. He's basically the Igor to Voldemort's Dr. Frankenstein

Does Pettigrew make an appearance in OotP? I can't seem to recall him being in there anywhere. I think we last see him at the end of GoF.

Here is a major, and I mean major spoiler from the 5th book. If you don't want to read it yet, I'll just let it suffice to say that he plays a huge role in books 4 and 5.

spoiler(highlight to read):
He gets killed by Bellatrix Lestrange, a supporter of Voldemort, at the end of Book 5.

OK, so she's an oddball, and she's really loyal to what is right. But that's true of a lot of the characters. Dumbledore, Lupin, (real) Moody, Neville, Fred and George, etc. What makes her so special? And where the hell are people getting Harry and Luna from? Ron and Luna is hinted at far more, what with her dreamily humming "Weasley is our King" and all.
