Since hotseat is basically PBEM without a needed save, I don't see how they could have one without the other.

This is funny but I just heard that there will be a Civ4 (a far cry from me too involved in pre-release Civ3). I must say that after reading the first post on the facts of Civ4, I like what I am hearing. I never did get into Civ3 because I did not like the "hard-coded" nature of the game, esp in comparison to the beloved Civ2. I look forward to hearing more about Civ4.

This is both from various screenshots and tidbits (such as the Sid Meier interview, see news) and, most importantly, the PC Zone preview Myrddin reported on. All changes are marked in green, to make them stand out more (because there are so many of them).

Nice updates. I've been avoiding discussion of Civ 4 after Civ 3 failed to live up to its promises. This list of features certainly sounds interesting.

I've always been wary about gimmicks like leaders but recently have come to admit that these games need something to create variety and make each game different. Multiple paths through the tech and leader personalities help. It will be tough to make sure there are several equally viable paths and leader styles, but great if they achieve it.

...it seems like every game of civ stature tends to buy itself a bit of time by releasing in fall to hit the holiday rather than rush release during the summer. Too bad as that is the one time of year I have time to play (or too good as it may end up giving them time to sharpen the product). I think the rumours of a summer release were around for civ 3 as well...but then it was held back til september if memory serves.

It's a bit early for system requirements to already be released. But they will probably be similar to Pirates: 1 GHz, 256 MB, 32 MB video with T&L support. They might crank it up a little, but not too much.

Conventional wisdom is that sales are always poor in the summer so its better to release it fresh for the Thanksgiving/Christmas high sales period.

I have just read the PC Zone mag and can make these definite conclusions:

*Barbarians will have animal attackers.

*The map is the same iso-style as usual but also fully 3D.

*Maps can be zoomed, spun, showing the traditional tiles we all love.

*Most screenies we have seen are at full zoom, the panned out view is amazing.

*Religions will indeed be generic. (Aussie_Lurker, rejoice!)

*The civs all have a cultural/nation flag. They look good.

*The classic city square and culture borders are there in all their full glory!

*The maps and worlds graphically look magnificent and totally huge!

*The terrain features and tile improvements also look amazing! Mines, mills and proto-factories!

*Units will go up in level and be given a choice of new abilities with each rank. RPG/Wargame style!

*Temples and city enhancement features seem to be on the maps. I spotted a temple ziggurat.

*The units look really awesome when zoomed out, giving a sumptous vista of an uncluttered war.

*The coasts are square, just like CIV2/3! Excellent!

*Irrigation/crops and and bonus tiles are represented fully. Rivers are very detailed!

*A merchant/caravan is spotted! Also Pikemen!

*The whole ensemble looks mind-blowing. This game will rule, I am convinced.

I have tons of new screenies - But I will await an OK to post them!

Another little bit I noticed:

Scouts on various terrain seem to be able to report the level of 'fresh water'...

No doubt this ties in with the CIV4 health concept!
Perhaps scouts now are even more useful to find new city sites!

Barbarian culture banner/symbol seems to be a pirate-style skull on a black flag.

This idea has been used more than once in CIV2 mods.

I reckon spying and espionage will be abstracted, as like in CIV3.

The player might know about some improvements, but perhaps not all.

The temple in the screenie might even be a minor wonder...!
