I care not for Kerry's borrowed rhetoric. Especially the part where he said we will experience a "new birth of freedom." Just a few minutes ago, he talked about how he wanted to "move America forward." This is the name of a right-wing organization. :hmm: What's the deal with this?

Well seriously. Why the hell would you quote the Republican Party founder at the DNC?

The other thing that disturbed me was when he discussed the Berlin Wall, and how great West Berlin was and how horrible East Berlin was. He called the wall a dividing line between Communism and Democracy.

Firstly, that's comparing an economic system to a political system. Secondly, it makes me wonder if he's afraid of praising capitalism...

BTW, if it makes you feel better, I think he will repeal the Patriot Act if he gets the chance.

BTW, a new slogan of Kerry's is "Help is on the way!"

But notice that this was a campaign slogan for Cheney in 2000.

He's stealing soundbites from the very people he criticizes!

Kerry gave a good speech, much better than his norm. Amazing. I thought he should've trimmed some of it, though.

It's just funny because although they hate each other, and their bases are completely polarized against each other, they use exactly the same soundbites. Verbatim.

It was an accident. He corrected himself and meant to say anti-terrorist operations. I'm sure it's gonna get lots of right-wing play though.

Over all it was a good speach delivered by a mediocre speaker at his best performance. He seemed like he was in a hurry to get it over with, but that could have been excitement. When you're doing something that you've built up to your whole life, it always seems like its over too fast (thinking of my recent wedding).

One thing that really iritated me though was his continued quieting of the crowd during his speech. He'd make some point and he'd get a cheer, and he'd try to talk overthem, once four times before he was able to get going. He wasn't prepped on effective use of the crowd, let their cheering sell him. He seemed impatient with them, which is odd, considering that his speech seemed very much tailored not for moderates, but to win the hearts of the Democratic left.

Considering how much they made of no Bush-bashing in the whole rest of the convention, it's almost odd. Unless maybe they didn't want to steal Kerry's thunder. He didn't directly attack Bush, though. He attacked everything Bush's done instead.

Overall, I'd give him a B+.

Anyone who would say that wasn't a good speech must be hardcore Republican or just hate Kerry no matter what.

The truth is, it was an excellent speech. The truth is, you can't write much better speech than that. The truth is, that's maybe one of the best speeches in presidential competitions in a long time.

The way he delivered it wasn't the best. He started kind of uncomfortably. The loud crowd, he couldn't work it at first. He had a difficult pace. But he got the hang of it, making it an OK delivery. Not the best possible though. Not a delivery that the speech itself would have deserved.

Let there be no mistake, it was a great speech, and the rest of you are just haters. I mean, I haven't taken any sides on Bush vs. Kerry, but show me a speech, that is even WRITTEN (you don't even have to compare delivery) as good as this one, that Bush has given. The fact is, there is no competition.

Now, Bush has to ante up. His delivery is not as good. He maybe is more charismatic though. So he should use that. He should avoid all the traps Kerry set to him in this speech. And his speech writers better step up big, rock star big. I don't say he can't do better than Kerry tonight, but I say it will be very difficult. Difficult for anyone.

Right, so when do the presidential candidates do tv debates?

Obama took care of the applause by basically ignoring it and speaking even louder, which I thought is a far more effective approach than either trying to stop it, or making lengthy pauses everytime the crowd breaks out in applause.

There were some points where the writing was good. But it was boring more often than not, and his delivery was horrible.

Now, I'm perfectly willing to admit that I am extremely biased against Kerry, but you can't yell at me because I don't support Bush.

Ramo, right, I agree. Except if it's a clear punch line, you should let the crowd cheer for a while. Precise build ups, and then do the talking over with louder and steady voice, leading to almost exploding punch line and follow it up with a serious face and soon after give some nods with a smile. It's not that difficult.

I disagree. When you're trying to sell yourself, one of the most effective techniques is to let others do the selling. Let the crowd cheer their hearts out. It makes you seem a much better speaker.

che, I disagree. In a longer speech, the structure becomes weaker if they cheer the whole time and you don't speak. Rather sometimes speak over to make the cheering even louder, that sells good too.

Great speaking comes from passion. Kerry's passion is very contained, even though in places it showed through. I have the feeling that if Bill Clinton gave that same speech, I'd have swooned. Now that's a man that give a speech.

Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

If you can effectively talk over the crowd, it's very energetic. Tell the crowd something they want to hear, they start cheering, and then you say something else they like, and the energy builds more. But he was somewhere in between, and it wasn't effective.
