quote: I will double our special forces to conduct terrorist operations. - John Kerry |
It was an accident. He corrected himself and meant to say anti-terrorist operations. I'm sure it's gonna get lots of right-wing play though.
Over all it was a good speach delivered by a mediocre speaker at his best performance. He seemed like he was in a hurry to get it over with, but that could have been excitement. When you're doing something that you've built up to your whole life, it always seems like its over too fast (thinking of my recent wedding).
One thing that really iritated me though was his continued quieting of the crowd during his speech. He'd make some point and he'd get a cheer, and he'd try to talk overthem, once four times before he was able to get going. He wasn't prepped on effective use of the crowd, let their cheering sell him. He seemed impatient with them, which is odd, considering that his speech seemed very much tailored not for moderates, but to win the hearts of the Democratic left.
Considering how much they made of no Bush-bashing in the whole rest of the convention, it's almost odd. Unless maybe they didn't want to steal Kerry's thunder. He didn't directly attack Bush, though. He attacked everything Bush's done instead.
Overall, I'd give him a B+.

Anyone who would say that wasn't a good speech must be hardcore Republican or just hate Kerry no matter what.
The truth is, it was an excellent speech. The truth is, you can't write much better speech than that. The truth is, that's maybe one of the best speeches in presidential competitions in a long time.
The way he delivered it wasn't the best. He started kind of uncomfortably. The loud crowd, he couldn't work it at first. He had a difficult pace. But he got the hang of it, making it an OK delivery. Not the best possible though. Not a delivery that the speech itself would have deserved.
Let there be no mistake, it was a great speech, and the rest of you are just haters. I mean, I haven't taken any sides on Bush vs. Kerry, but show me a speech, that is even WRITTEN (you don't even have to compare delivery) as good as this one, that Bush has given. The fact is, there is no competition.
Now, Bush has to ante up. His delivery is not as good. He maybe is more charismatic though. So he should use that. He should avoid all the traps Kerry set to him in this speech. And his speech writers better step up big, rock star big. I don't say he can't do better than Kerry tonight, but I say it will be very difficult. Difficult for anyone.
Right, so when do the presidential candidates do tv debates?
